Two slenderness ratios, 40 and 60, were tested each with simulated pinned and fixed ends. Compressive short time and compressive creep data for the Al alloy were collected. A technique, whereby end shortening and central deflection data are autographically recorded both during the period when the creep load was being applied and during creep, was used. It was possible to determine initial imperfections by the Southwell method for creep buckling. Data include initial imperfections as well as central deflection and end shortening data. Experimental relationships between applied stress and failure time are presented. (Author).

Book excerpt: The results of creep-buckling experiments on long, simply-supported plates of aluminum alloy 2024-0 at 500 F under axial compression were correlated with a previously developed theory for perfect plates. Corn- pressive-creep properties of the test material were obtained to develop the theoretical results. The plate experiments were performed using a square-tube configuration after an evaluation program indicated that the conventional vee groove-knife edge arrangement for simulating simple support was unsatisfactory for use at elevated temperatures. The theory was found to have predictive value for plate creep buckling when used in normalized form. A simplified approach for predicting creep crippling was also correlated with the test data.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of short-time creep-buckling and creep-bending tests of 2024-T4 aluminum-alloy columns of slenderness ratio 111 are presented. The tests were performed at 600 degrees F, and strain measurements were taken with high-temperature electric-resistance strain gages. A description of the development of the gages is given in an appendix. The column tests show that the critical time decreases much more rapidly with increasing load than with Increasing initial deviation from straightness. The bending tests indicate that the steady creep rate of the curvature is a simple power function of applied moment. These latter results, together with a previously derived creep-buckling theory, are used to develop a semi-empirical formula suitable as a guide for the determination of the critical time for columns.
