Book Surface Studies of Carbon Fibers Related to Their Use in Carbon Carbon Composites

Download or read book Surface Studies of Carbon Fibers Related to Their Use in Carbon Carbon Composites written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The surface chemistry and topography of carbon fiber surfaces have been probed using a variety of surface analytical tools in order to understand the processes that effect the oxidation of carbon-carbon composites. Core and Valence Band X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) and other techniques were used to monitor the surface chemistry and topography of carbon fibers, with and without oxidation protective coatings. A special high vacuum apparatus was built to study surface oxidation at elevated temperatures in a chamber directly attached to a surface spectrometer. The valence band XPS spectra were interpreted by calculations that modelled the fiber surface and interfacial chemistry. The results of the project provide a better understanding of the inter facial chemistry associated with carbon fiber surface oxidation and protection. Protective films for the outer surface of the composite, and coupling agents that improve the oxidation resistance of the carbon fiber-carbon matrix interface are reported. jg p.1.

Book Atomic Force Microscopy Based Eddy Current Imaging and Characterization of Composite and Nanocomposite Materials Preprint

Download or read book Atomic Force Microscopy Based Eddy Current Imaging and Characterization of Composite and Nanocomposite Materials Preprint written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) based eddy current imaging technique has been used to characterize carbon fiber reinforced composites and carbon nanofibers nanocomposite. The surface topography and eddy current images of the same region of the sample acquired at the same time are presented. While the contrast in AFM images is due to surface topography variations, the contrast in the eddy current images is due to the local variation in the electrical conductivity of the sample. The results show that the combined techniques of AFM and eddy current imaging can be used effectively to investigate the distribution, dispersion of the carbon fibers in the polymer matrix and the fiber matrix interphase. An enhanced contrast at the interface between the fiber and the matrix has been observed in the eddy current images. The implications of the improved contrast in eddy current images and its application to investigation of fiber-matrix interface/interphase in carbon fiber polymer matrix composites is discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of the atomic force microscope (AFM) came an extremely valuable analytical resource and technique useful for the qualitative and quantitative surface analysis with sub-nanometer resolution. In addition, samples studied with an AFM do not require any special pretreatments that may alter or damage the sample and permits a three dimensional investigation of the surface. This book presents a collection of current research from scientists throughout the world that employ atomic force microscopy in their investigations. The technique has become widely accepted and used in obtaining valuable data in a wide variety of fields. It is impressive to see how, in a short time period since its development in 1986, it has proliferated and found many uses throughout manufacturing, research and development.

This technique is a potential applicant for imaging the bodies at Nano-scale under 10 nm due to the sharp apex of AFM's tips. In addition, it could apply for biology samples such as DNA, proteins, cells, which have larger sizes and higher sensitive surfaces. Therefore, AFM tip shapes have been emerged and studied throughout. The image information has been analyzed to estimate the AFM tip profile. The image analysis has been characterized by many programs specifically Surface program and Matlab. The purpose of our work is to present specific methods of investigation AFM tips on 2 nm - 10 nm carbon nanotube diameters.

Book Atom Probe Tomography

Download or read book Atom Probe Tomography written by Michael K. Miller and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microanalytical technique of atom probe tomography (APT) permits the spatial coordinates and elemental identities of the individual atoms within a small volume to be determined with near atomic resolution. Therefore, atom probe tomography provides a technique for acquiring atomic resolution three dimensional images of the solute distribution within the microstructures of materials. This monograph is designed to provide researchers and students the necessary information to plan and experimentally conduct an atom probe tomography experiment. The techniques required to visualize and to analyze the resulting three-dimensional data are also described. The monograph is organized into chapters each covering a specific aspect of the technique. The development of this powerful microanalytical technique from the origins offield ion microscopy in 1951, through the first three-dimensional atom probe prototype built in 1986 to today's commercial state-of-the-art three dimensional atom probe is documented in chapter 1. A general introduction to atom probe tomography is also presented in chapter 1. The various methods to fabricate suitable needle-shaped specimens are presented in chapter 2. The procedure to form field ion images of the needle-shaped specimen is described in chapter 3. In addition, the appearance of microstructural features and the information that may be estimated from field ion microscopy are summarized. A brief account of the theoretical basis for processes of field ionization and field evaporation is also included.

Download or read book Studies of the Surface Treatment and Sizing of Carbon Fiber Surfaces on the Mechanical Properties of Composites Containing Carbon Fibers written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2018-07-16 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Carbon fiber reinforced composites are materials where carbon fibers are used to reinforce a matrix to produce a light and strong material with important applications in the aerospace industry. There are many aspects of the preparation of these materials that would benefit from a study which combines the research of groups involved in the production, testing and analysis of these materials, and studies of the basic surface chemistry involved. This final reports presents the results of a project that has developed a collaboration between groups in all three of the major research universities in the State of Kansas, and promises to lead to a collaborative program that covers the major aspects of composite development and application. Sherwood has provided initial fiber surface treatment and sizing together with fiber and composite surface analysis; Lease, Tomblin and Wang have worked together toward the goal of preparing pre-preg and fabrication of laminated panels; Locke has developed computational models to evaluate the effect of surface treatment (and chemistry) on mechanical properties; Lease, Tomblin and Wang have worked together to perform all necessary mechanical testing. The research has been focused on materials that would benefit the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) program. The group has visited Dr. Howard Maars and his colleagues at NASA Langley, and has focused their studies on the NASA requirements discussed in this meeting. An important development, requested by NASA scientists, has been the acquisition and study of K3B as a matrix material for the composites. The project has led to the successful acquisition and surface analysis of K3B, together with the successful deposition of this material onto surface oxidized carbon fibers. Mechanical testing, modelling and the construction of composite preparation equipment has been achieved during the grant period. Sherwood, Peter M. Book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices

Download or read book Tribology and Mechanics of Magnetic Storage Devices written by Bharat Bhushan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since January 1990, when the first edition ofthis first-of-a-kind book appeared, there has been much experimental and theoretical progress in the multi disciplinary subject of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage devices. The subject has matured into a rigorous discipline, and many university tribology and mechanics courses now routinely contain material on magnetic storage devices. The major growth in the subject has been on the micro- and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics. Today, most large magnetic storage industries use atomic force microscopes to image the magnetic storage components. Many companies use variations of AFMs such as friction force microscopes (FFMs) for frictional studies. These instruments have also been used for studying scratch, wear, and indentation. These studies are valuable in the fundamental understanding of interfacial phenomena. In the second edition, I have added a new chapter, Chapter 11, on micro and nanoscale aspects of tribology and mechanics of magnetic storage compo nents. This chapter presents the state of the art of the micro/nanotribology and micro/nanomechanics of magnetic storage components. In addition, typographical errors in Chapters 1 to 10 and the appendixes have been corrected. These additions update this book and make it more valuable to researchers of the subject. I am grateful to many colleagues and particularly to my students, whose work is reported in Chapter 11. I thank my wife, Sudha, who has been forbearing during the progress of the research reported in this chapter.
