Book excerpt: Excerpt from Investigation Into the Growth in Height and Weight of Dependent Children The Jewish population of this country, numbering now more than 2,000,000, the constantly increasing stream of Jewish immigration to the United States, and particularly to the City of New York, and the necessarily increasing number of dependent Jewish children, make this subject interesting, and make it necessary to have at command accurate statistical information for the better handling of Jewish dependent children. It seems strange that there appears no published work on the subject of growth in height and weight of children, Jewish or non-Jewish, concerning the physical condition of children about to become inmates of child-caring institutions. When it is considered that there were in the United States, for 1904, according to the Bureau of Census, Department of Commerce and Labor, 92,289 dependent children below the age of sixteen years cared for by 1075 institutions, which number does not include many additional thousands of dependent children cared for in other ways, the value of such data can readily be seen and its influence appreciated. The subject is now receiving more attention than ever before, and its influence is better recognized, as shown by the fact that as late as 1909 an earnest attempt was made to organize a National Children's Bureau, the scope of the scheme being to gather statistics and data concerning the management and care of dependent children of all nationalities and religions in the United States. Mr. Theodore Roosevelt, then President, was personally interested in this movement and presided at the Conference, at which were present representatives from the many child-caring institutions in different parts of the country. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Growth and Education Some years ago I became greatly interested in the ques tion how a child grows. Principal Burk's monographs gave full information concerning growth in height and weight, and concerning some Of the most important changes in the nervous system. Professor Donaldson had told us of the growth of the brain. Concerning the growth of heart, lungs, and other organs, I could find at first but little information. I found an abundance of books concerning diseases Of children, but not one attempting to give a complete account of the growth of all the systems in the normal or average child. It looked as if we had been rearing and training our children without ever asking whether the child entering school was merely a small edition of the adult, or some thing quite different. We seemed to have been attempt ing by education at home and at school to supply the child's needs without having first asked what those needs were, and whether they differed slightly or greatly at different ages. Book excerpt: Excerpt from References on the Physical Growth and Development of the Normal Child An enormous amount of research in this field is being carried on by wvarious agencies and independent investigators, with very valuable results. It has long been Obvious to many of these workers that their progress would be very markedly advanced if some means could be found of coordinating all these various pieces of work. Every student of the literature on any scientific subject is impressed by the waste and delay involved in duplication and overlapping of research where the whole field is so inadequately covered. Variations in methods of work or in instruments used, and failure to take full advalntageof the previous findings of others also contribute to this resu t. Book Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease

Download or read book Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease written by Victor R. Preedy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-12-03 with total page 3113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growth is one of the human body’s most intricate processes: each body part or region has its own unique growth patterns. Yet at the individual and population levels, growth patterns are sensitive to adverse conditions, genetic predispositions, and environmental changes. And despite the body’s capacity to compensate for these developmental setbacks, the effects may be far-reaching, even life-long. The Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease brings this significant and complex field together in one comprehensive volume: impact of adverse variables on growth patterns; issues at different stages of prenatal development, childhood, and adolescence; aspects of catch-up growth, endocrine regulation, and sexual maturation; screening and assessment methods; and international perspectives. Tables and diagrams, applications to other areas of health and disease, and summary points help make the information easier to retain. Together, these 140 self-contained chapters in 15 sections [ok?] cover every area of human growth, including: Intrauterine growth retardation. Postnatal growth in normal and abnormal situations. Cells and growth of tissues. Sensory growth and development. Effects of disease on growth. Methods and standards for assessment of growth, and more. The Handbook of Growth and Growth Monitoring in Health and Disease is an invaluable addition to the reference libraries of a wide range of health professionals, among them health scientists, physicians, physiologists, nutritionists, dieticians, nurses, public health researchers, epidemiologists, exercise physiologists, and physical therapists. It is also useful to college-level students and faculty in the health disciplines, and to policymakers and health economists.

Book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8

Download or read book Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2015-07-23 with total page 587 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children are already learning at birth, and they develop and learn at a rapid pace in their early years. This provides a critical foundation for lifelong progress, and the adults who provide for the care and the education of young children bear a great responsibility for their health, development, and learning. Despite the fact that they share the same objective - to nurture young children and secure their future success - the various practitioners who contribute to the care and the education of children from birth through age 8 are not acknowledged as a workforce unified by the common knowledge and competencies needed to do their jobs well. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 explores the science of child development, particularly looking at implications for the professionals who work with children. This report examines the current capacities and practices of the workforce, the settings in which they work, the policies and infrastructure that set qualifications and provide professional learning, and the government agencies and other funders who support and oversee these systems. This book then makes recommendations to improve the quality of professional practice and the practice environment for care and education professionals. These detailed recommendations create a blueprint for action that builds on a unifying foundation of child development and early learning, shared knowledge and competencies for care and education professionals, and principles for effective professional learning. Young children thrive and learn best when they have secure, positive relationships with adults who are knowledgeable about how to support their development and learning and are responsive to their individual progress. Transforming the Workforce for Children Birth Through Age 8 offers guidance on system changes to improve the quality of professional practice, specific actions to improve professional learning systems and workforce development, and research to continue to build the knowledge base in ways that will directly advance and inform future actions. The recommendations of this book provide an opportunity to improve the quality of the care and the education that children receive, and ultimately improve outcomes for children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essential new volume in the Encyclopaedia of Sports Medicine series, published under the auspices of the International Olympic Committee, provides a thorough overview of the unique physiologic characteristics, responsiveness to training, and possible health hazards involved in the training, coaching, and medical care of young athletes. Intense involvement in competitive sports often begins during childhood. During adolescence, many athletes reach their peak performance and some may participate in World Championships and Olympic Games at a relatively young age. The Young Athlete presents the available information relevant to exercise and training in youth, reviewed and summarized by authors who are recognized as leaders in their respective fields. The Young Athlete is subdivided into seven parts covering: the physiologic bases of physical performance in view of growth and development; trainability and the consequences of a high level of physical activity during childhood and adolescence for future health; the epidemiology of injuries, their prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation; non-orthopedic health concerns including the pre-participation examination; psychosocial issues relevant to young athletes; diseases relevant to child and adolescent athletes; the methodology relevant to the assessment of young athletes. This valuable reference summarizes a large database of information from thousands of studies and is especially relevant to sports physicians, pediatricians, general practitioners, physical therapists, dietitians, coaches, students, and researchers in the exercise sciences.
