Book Flow Analysis with Atomic Spectrometric Detectors

Download or read book Flow Analysis with Atomic Spectrometric Detectors written by A. Sanz-Medel and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1999-02-25 with total page 489 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Flow Analysis (FA) offers a very convenient and fast approach to enhance and automate 'preliminary steps' of analysis (sample dissolution, pretreatments, preconcentrations, etc.) for atomic spectrometric detectors (ASD). Moreover, flow manifolds can ease the well-known problem of sample introduction/presentation to atomisers or even expand the classical scope of atomic/elemental information, characterizing atomic spectrometry, into the realm of molecules and metal-compounds analysis (e.g. by resorting to coupled separation techniques). All these facts could explain both the extraordinary interest for research and the great importance for practical problem-solving achieved nowadays by FA-ASD. On the threshold of the new millennium when plasma emission and mass spectrometry are so important and popular, the editor considered it timely to produce a book which covers all present atomic detectors and techniques where FA has been or can be advantageously employed. The book has been conceived in three separate parts:Part I gives the fundamental, instrumentation and potential of FIA as a most versatile sample presentation/introduction system for atomic spectrometry.Part II provides a modern account of fundamentals, possibilities and applications offered by flow analysis to atomic spectrometry for on-line sample pretreatments, separations and preconcentrations.Part III deals with applications of FA-ASD combinations to analytical problem-solving in most varied fields and situations. This monograph integrates the most popular aspects of FIA, its new developments for sample on-line treatments and on-line non-chromatographic and chromatographic separations (all typical 'flow analysis') in connection with all branches of analytical atomic spectrometry. Thus, academics, researchers and routine users of analytical atomic spectrometry will find this book invaluable.

Download or read book Trace Element Analysis in Biological Specimens written by R.F.M. Herber and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1994-05-19 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major theme of this book is analytical approaches to trace metal and speciation analysis in biological specimens. The emphasis is on the reliable determination of a number of toxicologically and environmentally important metals. It is essentially a handbook based on the practical experience of each individual author. The scope ranges from sampling and sample preparation to the application of various modern and well-documented methods, including quality assessment and control and statistical treatment of data. Practical advice on avoiding sample contamination is included. In the first part, the reader is offered an introduction into the basic principles and methods, starting with sampling, sample storage and sample treatment, with the emphasis on sample decomposition. This is followed by a description of the potential of atomic absorption spectrometry, atomic emission spectrometry, voltammetry, neutron activation analysis, isotope dilution analysis, and the possibilities for metal speciation in biological specimens. Quality control and all approaches to achieve reliable data are treated in chapters about interlaboratory and intralaboratory surveys and reference methods, reference materials and statistics and data evaluation. The chapters of the second part provide detailed information on the analysis of thirteen trace metals in the most important biological specimens. The following metals are treated in great detail: Aluminium, arsenic, cadmium, chromium, copper, lead, selenium, manganese, nickel, mercury, thallium, vanadium and zinc. The book will serve as a valuable aid for practical analysis in biomedical laboratories and for researchers involved with trace metal and species analysis in clinical, biochemical and environmental research.

Book Combined Flow Analytical and Vapour Generation Techniques for Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Determination of Trace Metals and Metalloids in Environmental Samples

Download or read book Combined Flow Analytical and Vapour Generation Techniques for Atomic Absorption Spectrometric Determination of Trace Metals and Metalloids in Environmental Samples written by Yanlin Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 542 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chapter 6 investigates the separation of Cd²+ from other metal ions by using halide loaded strongly basic anion exchange resin and fibre. The Cd²+ retention efficiency achieved with Cl−, Br− or I− loaded strongly basic anion exchangers was compared. I− loaded exchangers exhibited superior performance for the separation of Cd²+ from Zn²+, while Cl− or Br− loaded exchangers were necessary for the removal of Cu²+ and Pb²+. Elution with water, ammonia and ethylenediamine revealed that much higher stripping performance was accomplished with ethylenediamine than water and ammonia, achieving an elution efficiency of over 90%. Chapter 7 investigates an in-line separation method of Cd²+ from other metal ions by anion exchange based on the use of a multicommutation system for elimination of interferences and VGAAS determination of Cd. Operational parameters were optimized and the effect of SO4²− and NO3− on the retention of Cd²+ was investigated. The sensitivity enhancement by Zn²+ and ethylenediamine was investigated and employed to achieve better sensitivity for Cd determination. The performance of different anion exchangers was also compared. The interference by the organic substances in sediment and fish samples was eliminated by decomposition with microwave assisted digestion. The method was validated by determining Cd in river sediment AGAL10B reference material and a fish liver DOLT-4 reference material and a lake water sample. Chapter 8 investigates the use of the same multicommutation system for separation of Cd²+ from base metal ions by cation exchange with KI solution for the selective elution of Cd²+ and its subsequent VGAAS determination. Elimination of interference by several metal ions, such as Fe³+, Cr³+, Mn²+, Co²+, Ni²+, Zn²+, Cu²+, and Mo6+, was achieved in the VGAAS determination of Cd. The use of in-line preconcentration was also investigated for sensitivity improvement. To minimize the re-construction and maintenance of the flow analytical systems for different applications, a multifunctionalized circuit was constructed and applied to control all of the flow analytical manifolds in this project and has enabled easy and quick switch-over between different versions. Interferences from organic substances were encountered during application to real environmental and biological samples. Microwave assisted digestion was successfully used to decompose the organic substances and eliminate the interferences.
