The image of violence enacted by a male aggressor to a female victim dominates public perceptions of intimate partner violence (IPV). Book excerpt: Intimate partner violence (IPV) in the United States is a widely prevalent issue that impacts men and women, individuals of diverse racial/ethnic backgrounds, and individuals in heterosexual and same-sex couples. The present investigation examined whether mental health trainees' perceptions of an IPV scenario varied based on how the race and sexual orientation of the couple was described. The 150 mental health graduate student participants were randomly assigned a vignette depicting an IPV situation where the partners were described as 2 African American males, 2 White males, 2 African American females, 2 White females. Participants were asked to rank their most preferred treatment recommendations for the victim, and participants' levels of ethnocultural empathy and gender role stereotypes were investigated as potential predictors of IPV perceptions. No significant differences were found in IPV perceptions or treatment recommendations based on how the race and sexual orientation of the couple was described. Ethnocultural empathy and gender role stereotypes were both found to be significantly correlated with perceptions of the IPV scenario, but only gender role stereotypes was found to account for a significant amount of unique variance in IPV perceptions when controlling for ethnocultural empathy. Several demographic variables were significantly related to ethnocultural empathy, gender role stereotypes, and domestic violence beliefs. The findings and implications for mental health graduate training are discussed.

Book excerpt: Perceptions of vulnerability to violence and crime may be affected by differential exposure to risk and by individual, social and contextual factors. As such, this compilation begins by discussing the structural vulnerability associated with young students and analyzing studies that examine the perceptions of this specific population with respect to crime and victimization. Following this, a systematic review of the literature on the prevalence of violence in couples with homosexual orientation is provided, and the risk factors present in these relationships are addressed. The authors maintain that accurate scientific studies regarding the characteristics and risk factors for IPV in same-sex relationships are necessary in order to reduce prevalence and work on prevention. In one study, the potential impact of six different forms of childhood maltreatment on dispositional mindfulness development is analyzed. A number of parental relationship and resiliency protective factors were also added to the analysis. Survey respondents in this college sample completed indices of dispositional mindfulness, childhood maltreatment, parental relationship qualities, and resiliency factors. Conceptual frameworks are systemised and supported by empirical data related to the impact of child's exposure to different harmful situations in order to highlight the co-occurrence of multiple forms of violence throughout the life cycle. The authors intend to discuss the importance of interventions based on risk analysis and management, as well as on protective factors that contribute to the child's well-being. Next, based on empirical research conducted with children victims of domestic violence, the authors examine their experiences and perspectives of domestic violence and the role played by shelters. Implications for intervention and public policies are discussed. The concluding paper presents and discusses the results of an investigation into the depression indicators in Brazilian children and youths, victims of physical violence and/or intrafamilial sexual abuse. The sample was comprised of 1,253 participants, aged 6 to 16 years, 55.2% of which females and 48.2% males.

While LGBT populations often are combined as a single entity for research and advocacy purposes, each is a distinct population group with its own specific health needs. Furthermore, the experiences of LGBT individuals are not uniform and are shaped by factors of race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, geographical location, and age, any of which can have an effect on health-related concerns and needs. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People assesses the state of science on the health status of LGBT populations, identifies research gaps and opportunities, and outlines a research agenda for the National Institute of Health. The report examines the health status of these populations in three life stages: childhood and adolescence, early/middle adulthood, and later adulthood. At each life stage, the committee studied mental health, physical health, risks and protective factors, health services, and contextual influences. To advance understanding of the health needs of all LGBT individuals, the report finds that researchers need more data about the demographics of these populations, improved methods for collecting and analyzing data, and an increased participation of sexual and gender minorities in research. The Health of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender People is a valuable resource for policymakers, federal agencies including the National Institute of Health (NIH), LGBT advocacy groups, clinicians, and service providers.

The Supplemental Victimization Survey identified seven types of harassing or unwanted behaviors consistent with a course of conduct experienced by stalking victims. The survey classified individuals as stalking victims if they responded that they experienced at least one of these behaviors on at least two separate occasions. In addition, the individuals must have feared for their safety or that of a family member as a result of the course of conduct, or have experienced additional threatening behaviors that would cause a reasonable person to feel fear.
