Book Investigating the Relationship of As Constructed Asphalt Pavement Air Voids to Pavement Performance

Download or read book Investigating the Relationship of As Constructed Asphalt Pavement Air Voids to Pavement Performance written by and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 209 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several controlled laboratory studies have shown that air voids (AV) can have a large effect on the performance of asphalt pavements. AVs that are either too high or too low can cause a reduction in pavement life. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Web-Only Document 299: Investigating the Relationship of As-Constructed Asphalt Pavement Air Voids to Pavement Performance determines the effect of in-place AVs on the performance of asphalt concrete (AC) pavements. The document also has supplemental appendices that are available by request to Ed Harrigan at [email protected]. They include data sets for LTPP, Pavement ME Design Validation, MnROAD Validation, and NCAT Validation.

Book Probabilistic Analysis of Air Void Structure and Its Relationship to Permeability and Moisture Damage of Hot Mix Asphalt

Download or read book Probabilistic Analysis of Air Void Structure and Its Relationship to Permeability and Moisture Damage of Hot Mix Asphalt written by Adhara Castelblanco Torres and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The permeability of hot mix asphalt (HMA) is of special interest to engineers and researchers due to the effects that water has on asphalt pavement performance. Significant research has been done to study HMA permeability. However, most of the studies primarily focused on relating permeability to the average percent air voids in the mix. Such relationships cannot predict permeability accurately due to the different distributions of air void structures at a given average percent of air voids. Air void distribution is a function of many factors such as mix design, compaction method, and aggregate properties. Recent advances in X-ray computed tomography and image analysis techniques offer a unique opportunity to better quantify the air void structure and, consequently, predict HMA permeability. This study is focused on portraying permeability as a function of air void size distribution by using a probabilistic approach that was previously developed by Garcia Bengochea for soils. This approach expresses permeability as a function of the probability density function (pdf) of the air void size distribution. Equations are derived in this thesis to describe this relationship for laboratory specimens compacted using the linear kneading compactor (LKC) and Superave[superscript]TM gyratory compactor (SGC) as well as for field cores (labeled as MS). A good correlation exists between permeability and the pdf of the air voids that formed the flow paths (i.e. connected voids). The relationship between moisture damage, air void structure, and cohesive and adhesive bond energy is also investigated in this study. Moisture damage is evaluated by monitoring changes in mechanical properties due to moisture conditioning. The influence of air void structure on pore pressure is studied using a recently developed program at Texas A & M University that simulates fluid flow and pore pressure in a porous medium. The surface free energy of the aggregates and asphalt are calculated from laboratory measurements using the Universal Sorption Device (USD) and the Wilhelmy Plate method, respectively, in order to test the compatibility of the aggregates with the asphalt in the presence of water.

Book Coupled System Pavement Tire Vehicle

Download or read book Coupled System Pavement Tire Vehicle written by Michael Kaliske and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-02 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes research being pursued within the Research Unit FOR 2089, funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG), the goal of which is to develop the scientific base for a paradigm shift towards dimensioning, structural realization and maintenance of pavements, and prepare road infrastructure for future requirements. It provides a coupled thermo-mechanical model for a holistic physical analysis of the pavement-tire-vehicle system: based on this model, pavement structures and materials can be optimized so that new demands become compatible with the main goal – durability of the structures and the materials. The development of these new and qualitatively improved modelling approaches requires a holistic procedure through the coupling of theoretical numerical and experimental approaches as well as an interdisciplinary and closely linked handling of the coupled pavement-tire-vehicle system. This interdisciplinary research provides a deeper understanding of the physics of the full system through complex, coupled simulation approaches and progress in terms of improved and, therefore, more durable and sustainable structures.

Book Evaluation of Long term Field Performance of Cold In place Recycled Roads

Download or read book Evaluation of Long term Field Performance of Cold In place Recycled Roads written by Don Chen and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cold in-place recycling (CIR) has become an attractive method for rehabilitating asphalt roads that have good subgrade support and are suffering distress related to non-structural aging and cracking of the pavement layer. Although CIR is widely used, its use could be expanded if its performance were more predictable. Transportation officials have observed roads that were recycled under similar circumstances perform very differently for no clear reason. Moreover, a rational mix design has not yet been developed, design assumptions regarding the structural support of the CIR layer remain empirical and conservative, and there is no clear understanding of the cause-effect relationships between the choices made during the design/construction process and the resulting performance. The objective of this project is to investigate these relationships, especially concerning the age of the recycled pavement, cumulative traffic volume, support conditions, aged engineering properties of the CIR materials, and road performance. Twenty-four CIR asphalt roads constructed in Iowa from 1986 to 2004 were studied: 18 were selected from a sample of roads studied in a previous research project (HR-392), and 6 were selected from newer CIR projects constructed after 1999. This report describes the results of comprehensive field and laboratory testing for these CIR asphalt roads. The results indicate that the modulus of the CIR layer and the air voids of the CIR asphalt binder were the most important factors affecting CIR pavement performance for high-traffic roads. For low-traffic roads, the wet indirect tensile strength significantly affected pavement performance. The results of this research can help identify changes that should be made with regard to design, material selection, and construction in order to improve the performance and cost-effectiveness of future recycled roads.
