Book Reduced Yield Stress for Zirconium Exposed to Iodine

Download or read book Reduced Yield Stress for Zirconium Exposed to Iodine written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iodine-induced stress-corrosion cracking (ISCC), a known failure mode for nuclear fuel cladding, occurs when iodine generated during the irradiation of a nuclear fuel pellet escapes the pellet through diffusion or thermal cracking and chemically interacts with the inner surface of the clad material, inducing a subsequent effect on the cladding's resistance to mechanical stress. To complement experimental investigations of ISCC, a reactive force field (ReaxFF) compatible with the Zr-I chemical and materials systems has been developed and applied to simulate the impact of iodine exposure on the mechanical strength of the material. The study shows that the material's resistance to stress (as captured by the yield stress of a high-energy grain boundary) is related to the surface coverage of iodine, with the implication that ISCC is the result of adsorption-enhanced decohesion.

Book The influence of hydrogen content and graphite coatings on the iodine stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of zirconium alloys

Download or read book The influence of hydrogen content and graphite coatings on the iodine stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of zirconium alloys written by J. A. Chitty and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The individual influence of hydrogen content and graphite coating on the iodine stress corrosion cracking susceptibility of zirconium alloys has been investigated using the stressed c-ring and fuel swelling simulation testing techniques. such parameters as hydrogen content, iodine concentration, type of graphite coating, alloy composition and condition of tubing have been examined. fracture topography has been characterized both by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. models have been proposed to account for the resistance to iodine stress corrosion cracking provided by both hydrogen and to a lesser extent, graphite coatings.

Book Chemical Aspects of Iodine Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys

Download or read book Chemical Aspects of Iodine Induced Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys written by D. Cubicciotti and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The thermodynamics of the zirconium-iodine system are summarized. In the gas phase are four stable species: ZrI4, ZrI3, ZrI2, and ZrI. Their enthalpies of formation and free-energy functions are presented. The only one of those species relevant to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of zirconium alloys by iodine is the tetraiodide. There are also four solid compounds corresponding approximately in composition to the tetra, tri, di, and monoiodides. Ranges of solid solution composition, enthalpies of formation, and free-energy functions for those phases are given. Thermodynamic information for iodine chemisorbed on zirconium surfaces is also presented. These thermochemical results are used to analyze chemical behavior in situations related to SCC. In particular, reaction of cesium iodide with uranium dioxide in a fuel rod may produce an iodine pressure large enough to result in chemisorbtion of iodine on clean zirconium.

Book Out of Pile Testing of Iodine Stress Corrosion Cracking in Zircaloy Tubing in Relation to the Pellet Cladding Interaction Phenomenon

Download or read book Out of Pile Testing of Iodine Stress Corrosion Cracking in Zircaloy Tubing in Relation to the Pellet Cladding Interaction Phenomenon written by M. Peehs and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To investigate iodine stress corrosion cracking on the behavior of Zircaloy tubing, a standard test procedure with internally pressurized creep specimens (I-SCC standard test) and a split-ring test (I-SCC laboratory test) were developed. The threshold value for brittle cracking in iodine is 10-6 g iodine per square centimetre. The uniform elongation shows a clear minimum in its dependence on strain rate. Basal pole orientations in the range of ±50 to ±70 deg relative to the radial direction are the most I-SCC sensitive textures. The I-SCC process occurs in several stages; incubation, crack nucleation, and propagation. A thermodynamic evaluation indicates that I-SCC only occurs when zirconium iodides condense on the Zircaloy surface. Results show that comparisons of the I-SCC susceptibility of tubing manufactured in different manners should be made at the same point on the strain rate versus uniform elongation curves; for example, at the strain rate with the minimum of uniform elongation.

Book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys in Iodine Containing Environments

Download or read book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zircaloys in Iodine Containing Environments written by B. Cox and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Iodine solutions in organic solvents fall into two groups. First, those which, like iodine vapor at room temperature, cause crack propagation in double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens but do not initiate cracks in smooth specimens. These are solvents which form no, or only weak complexes with iodine. A second group of solvents (alcohols) both initiate cracking in smooth specimens and cause crack propagation in DCB specimens. These are solvents which form strong complexes with iodine. In addition to these two groups there are a few solvents in which neither crack propagation in DCB specimens nor cracking of smooth specimens occur.

Book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zirconium in Nitric Acid

Download or read book Stress Corrosion Cracking of Zirconium in Nitric Acid written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The susceptibility of zirconium and its common alloys to stress corrosion cracking (SCC) in nitric acid was investigated by slow strain-rate and constant deflection techniques. Cracking occurred at 25°C over a wide range of acid concentrations and electrochemical potentials. The crack velocity increased slightly with increasing temperature. The failure mode was transgranular and the morphology was similar to SCC failures of zirconium alloys in other environments. The fracture was very orientation-dependent suggesting that it occurs on a single crystallographic plane in the material. The results of the study are not consistent with a hydrogen mechanism for cracking.

Book Classical And Quantum Dynamics In Condensed Phase Simulations Proceedings Of The International School Of Physics

This book was released on 1998-06-17 with total page 881 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The school held at Villa Marigola, Lerici, Italy, in July 1997 was very much an educational experiment aimed not just at teaching a new generation of students the latest developments in computer simulation methods and theory, but also at bringing together researchers from the condensed matter computer simulation community, the biophysical chemistry community and the quantum dynamics community to confront the shared problem: the development of methods to treat the dynamics of quantum condensed phase systems. This volume collects the lectures delivered there. Due to the focus of the school, the contributions divide along natural lines into two broad groups: (1) the most sophisticated forms of the art of computer simulation, including biased phase space sampling schemes, methods which address the multiplicity of time scales in condensed phase problems, and static equilibrium methods for treating quantum systems; (2) the contributions on quantum dynamics, including methods for mixing quantum and classical dynamics in condensed phase simulations and methods capable of treating all degrees of freedom quantum-mechanically.
