Download or read book Preparing Dinosaurs written by Caitlin Donahue Wylie and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An investigation of the work and workers in fossil preparation labs reveals the often unacknowledged creativity and problem-solving on which scientists rely. Those awe-inspiring dinosaur skeletons on display in museums do not spring fully assembled from the earth. Technicians known as preparators have painstakingly removed the fossils from rock, repaired broken bones, and reconstructed missing pieces to create them. These specimens are foundational evidence for paleontologists, and yet the work and workers in fossil preparation labs go largely unacknowledged in publications and specimen records. In this book, Caitlin Wylie investigates the skilled labor of fossil preparators and argues for a new model of science that includes all research work and workers. Drawing on ethnographic observations and interviews, Wylie shows that the everyday work of fossil preparation requires creativity, problem-solving, and craft. She finds that preparators privilege their own skills over technology and that scientists prefer to rely on these trusted technicians rather than new technologies. Wylie examines how fossil preparators decide what fossils, and therefore dinosaurs, look like; how labor relations between interdependent yet hierarchically unequal collaborators influence scientific practice; how some museums display preparators at work behind glass, as if they were another exhibit; and how these workers learn their skills without formal training or scientific credentials. The work of preparing specimens is a crucial component of scientific research, although it leaves few written traces. Wylie argues that the paleontology research community's social structure demonstrates how other sciences might incorporate non-scientists into research work, empowering and educating both scientists and nonscientists.

Did they live at the same time as humans? Were there dinosaurs on Noah's Ark? How did they go extinct? Guide to Dinosaurs is a fascinating and lavishly illustrated volume that takes a careful look at the evidence and how it fits with the historic accounts given in Scripture.

Download or read book Dinosaurs written by David E. Fastovsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2009-01-12 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the authors of The Evolution and Extinction of the Dinosaurs, comes a general introduction to the study of dinosaurs for non-specialists, designed to excite readers about science by using the ever-popular animals - the dinosaurs - to illustrate and discuss geology, natural history and evolution. While it focuses on dinosaurs, it also uses them to convey other aspects of the natural sciences, including fundamental concepts in evolutionary biology, physiology, life history, and systematics. Considerable attention is devoted the nature of science itself: what it is, what it is not, and how science can be used to investigate particular kinds of questions. Dinosaurs is unique because it fills a gap between the glossy, fact-driven dinosaur books for younger readers, and the higher-level academic books, addressing the palaeontology of dinosaurs exactly as professionals in the field do.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can long-dead dinosaurs teach us about our future? Plenty, according to paleontologist Kenneth Lacovara, who has discovered some of the largest creatures to ever walk the Earth. By tapping into the ubiquitous wonder that dinosaurs inspire, Lacovara weaves together the stories of our geological awakening, of humanity’s epic struggle to understand the nature of deep time, the meaning of fossils, and our own place on the vast and bountiful tree of life. Go on a journey––back to when dinosaurs ruled the Earth––to discover how dinosaurs achieved feats unparalleled by any other group of animals. Learn the secrets of how paleontologists find fossils, and explore quirky, but profound questions, such as: Is a penguin a dinosaur? And, how are the tiny arms of T. rex the key to its power and ferocity? In this revealing book, Lacovara offers the latest ideas about the shocking and calamitous death of the dinosaurs and ties their vulnerabilities to our own. Why Dinosaurs Matter is compelling and engaging—a great reminder that our place on this planet is both precarious and potentially fleeting. “As we move into an uncertain environmental future, it has never been more important to understand the past.”

Book Dinosaurs A Very Short Introduction

Download or read book Dinosaurs A Very Short Introduction written by David Norman and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2005-07-28 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The popularity of dinosaurs seems never ending, fuelled by films such as Jurassic Park and documentaries (Walking with Dinosaurs). But how much do these popular programmes really tell us about the recent scientific discoveries and the latest research into the world of the dinosaur? This is the first book to tell the general reader about what's really happening now in dinosaur research. It tells the story behind the exciting scientific discoveries that have built up a picture of how dinosaurs looked, what they ate, how they moved and interacted with each other. This new approach to this subject involves the combination of many areas of science (eg. anatomy, cosmology, physics, mechanics and engineering design) to piece together the evidence of how animal/plant life evolved on earth, and why it did in the way that it did. David Norman also talks about the part that informed speculation and luck play in major discoveries. Starting with ancient myths of dinosaur-like monsters (dragons) and the history of the discovery of dinosaurs, he goes on to discuss the evolution of Dinosaurs and the many different techniques used to understand them, including the latest virtual reality animation sequences and engineering design analysis.
