Book excerpt: The purpose of Inquiry in Action is to give elementary and middle school teachers a set of physical science activities to help teach the major concepts in the study of matter. The activities were developed to lend themselves to a guided-inquiry approach and to work across the range of Grades 3-8. To be effective over such a wide grade range, the activities are designed to cover basic concepts but have the flexibility to be modified by teachers through varying questioning strategies, the degree of guidance given students, and the vocabulary used. The materials for all activities are very common, safe, and inexpensive and are available at any grocery store.

Book Inquiry based Science Education

Download or read book Inquiry based Science Education written by Robyn M. Gillies and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2020-01-24 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students often think of science as disconnected pieces of information rather than a narrative that challenges their thinking, requires them to develop evidence-based explanations for the phenomena under investigation, and communicate their ideas in discipline-specific language as to why certain solutions to a problem work. The author provides teachers in primary and junior secondary school with different evidence-based strategies they can use to teach inquiry science in their classrooms. The research and theoretical perspectives that underpin the strategies are discussed as are examples of how different ones areimplemented in science classrooms to affect student engagement and learning. Key Features: Presents processes involved in teaching inquiry-based science Discusses importance of multi-modal representations in teaching inquiry based-science Covers ways to develop scientifically literacy Uses the Structure of Observed learning Outcomes (SOLO) Taxonomy to assess student reasoning, problem-solving and learning Presents ways to promote scientific discourse, including teacher-student interactions, student-student interactions, and meta-cognitive thinking

Book Teaching Chemistry in Higher Education

Download or read book Teaching Chemistry in Higher Education written by Michael Seery and published by Creathach Press. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Teaching Chemistry in Higher Education celebrates the contributions of Professor Tina Overton to the scholarship and practice of teaching and learning in chemistry education. Leading educators in United Kingdom, Ireland, and Australia—three countries where Tina has had enormous impact and influence—have contributed chapters on innovative approaches that are well-established in their own practice. Each chapter introduces the key education literature underpinning the approach being described. Rationales are discussed in the context of attributes and learning outcomes desirable in modern chemistry curricula. True to Tina’s personal philosophy, chapters offer pragmatic and useful guidance on the implementation of innovative teaching approaches, drawing from the authors’ experience of their own practice and evaluations of their implementation. Each chapter also offers key guidance points for implementation in readers’ own settings so as to maximise their adaptability. Chapters are supplemented with further reading and supplementary materials on the book’s website (overtonfestschrift.wordpress.com). Chapter topics include innovative approaches in facilitating group work, problem solving, context- and problem-based learning, embedding transferable skills, and laboratory education—all themes relating to the scholarly interests of Professor Tina Overton. Book Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards

Download or read book Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2000-05-03 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans, especially children, are naturally curious. Yet, people often balk at the thought of learning scienceâ€"the "eyes glazed over" syndrome. Teachers may find teaching science a major challenge in an era when science ranges from the hardly imaginable quark to the distant, blazing quasar. Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards is the book that educators have been waiting forâ€"a practical guide to teaching inquiry and teaching through inquiry, as recommended by the National Science Education Standards. This will be an important resource for educators who must help school boards, parents, and teachers understand "why we can't teach the way we used to." "Inquiry" refers to the diverse ways in which scientists study the natural world and in which students grasp science knowledge and the methods by which that knowledge is produced. This book explains and illustrates how inquiry helps students learn science content, master how to do science, and understand the nature of science. This book explores the dimensions of teaching and learning science as inquiry for K-12 students across a range of science topics. Detailed examples help clarify when teachers should use the inquiry-based approach and how much structure, guidance, and coaching they should provide. The book dispels myths that may have discouraged educators from the inquiry-based approach and illuminates the subtle interplay between concepts, processes, and science as it is experienced in the classroom. Inquiry and the National Science Education Standards shows how to bring the standards to life, with features such as classroom vignettes exploring different kinds of inquiries for elementary, middle, and high school and Frequently Asked Questions for teachers, responding to common concerns such as obtaining teaching supplies. Turning to assessment, the committee discusses why assessment is important, looks at existing schemes and formats, and addresses how to involve students in assessing their own learning achievements. In addition, this book discusses administrative assistance, communication with parents, appropriate teacher evaluation, and other avenues to promoting and supporting this new teaching paradigm.

Book excerpt: Laboratory experiences as a part of most U.S. high school science curricula have been taken for granted for decades, but they have rarely been carefully examined. What do they contribute to science learning? What can they contribute to science learning? What is the current status of labs in our nations high schools as a context for learning science? This book looks at a range of questions about how laboratory experiences fit into U.S. high schools: What is effective laboratory teaching? What does research tell us about learning in high school science labs? How should student learning in laboratory experiences be assessed? Do all student have access to laboratory experiences? What changes need to be made to improve laboratory experiences for high school students? How can school organization contribute to effective laboratory teaching? With increased attention to the U.S. education system and student outcomes, no part of the high school curriculum should escape scrutiny. This timely book investigates factors that influence a high school laboratory experience, looking closely at what currently takes place and what the goals of those experiences are and should be. Science educators, school administrators, policy makers, and parents will all benefit from a better understanding of the need for laboratory experiences to be an integral part of the science curriculum-and how that can be accomplished.

Book The Language of Science Education

Download or read book The Language of Science Education written by William F. McComas and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-12-30 with total page 122 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Language of Science Education: An Expanded Glossary of Key Terms and Concepts in Science Teaching and Learning is written expressly for science education professionals and students of science education to provide the foundation for a shared vocabulary of the field of science teaching and learning. Science education is a part of education studies but has developed a unique vocabulary that is occasionally at odds with the ways some terms are commonly used both in the field of education and in general conversation. Therefore, understanding the specific way that terms are used within science education is vital for those who wish to understand the existing literature or make contributions to it. The Language of Science Education provides definitions for 100 unique terms, but when considering the related terms that are also defined as they relate to the targeted words, almost 150 words are represented in the book. For instance, “laboratory instruction” is accompanied by definitions for openness, wet lab, dry lab, virtual lab and cookbook lab. Each key term is defined both with a short entry designed to provide immediate access following by a more extensive discussion, with extensive references and examples where appropriate. Experienced readers will recognize the majority of terms included, but the developing discipline of science education demands the consideration of new words. For example, the term blended science is offered as a better descriptor for interdisciplinary science and make a distinction between project-based and problem-based instruction. Even a definition for science education is included. The Language of Science Education is designed as a reference book but many readers may find it useful and enlightening to read it as if it were a series of very short stories.
