Book excerpt: From the dawn of time, ruby and sapphire have both attracted and fascinated humans in ways that few other items could. While objects of desire are found throughout the natural world, physical beauty is too often ephemeral. From the allure of a man, woman, flower or butterfly, through the fleeting moments of a sunset, there is little that lasts and practically nothing that can be passed down to our descendants. The exception is precious stones. Not only are they the most durable creations of mother nature, but their visual splendor is truly eternal. In this companion to his 2013 book, Ruby & Sapphire--A Collector's Guide, Richard Hughes examines these gems from the gemological standpoint, delving into these gems not just from the aesthetic, but also from the scientific point of view. The product of nearly 40 years of firsthand experience, it covers every aspect of the subject from A-Z. History, sources, prices, quality analysis, synthetics and treatments, everything is here. Ruby & Sapphire--A Gemologist's Guide represents the most comprehensive book ever written on a single precious stone. With over 1000 photos, maps and illustrations and 3500 references, it is nothing less than a tour-de-force of gemological scholarship.

Book An Improved Foundation for the Investigation and Treatment of Gastric Dysrhythmia PhD Thesis

Download or read book An Improved Foundation for the Investigation and Treatment of Gastric Dysrhythmia PhD Thesis written by Gregory O'Grady and published by Gregory O'Grady. This book was released on 2012 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gastric motility disorders remain a complex clinical challenge, and inflict a substantial burden of cost and suffering on society. Gastric contractions are coordinated by an underlying electrical activity, and gastric dysrhythmias are implicated in the pathophysiology of several motility disorders. However, the significance of dysrhythmias remains uncertain, and there are few elective therapies, because current tools to investigate dysrhythmias have low reliability owing to their lack of spatial resolution. This thesis aimed to develop an improved foundation for the investigation and management of gastric dysrhythmia, by advancing and translating high-resolution (HR; multi-electrode) spatiotemporal mapping. The research is a cross-disciplinary program of bioengineering, and basic and clinical electrophysiology. A range of HR mapping devices are first developed and validated for intra-operative gastric mapping, including at open and laparoscopic surgery. Automated signal processing tools are next validated for the efficient, reliable marking, grouping, and mapping of slow wave events, and these tools are integrated into an intuitive software platform. These methodological advances are then applied in a series of experimental studies. The origin and propagation of porcine gastric slow wave activity is defined, followed by clinical translation with the first spatiotemporal analysis of normal human gastric slow wave propagation. The methods are then applied to define new patterns and mechanisms of gastric dysrhythmia, initially in a porcine model, including the first demonstration of how rapid, high-amplitude circumferential propagation emerges during dysrhythmias. The first clinical study applying HR electrical mapping is then presented, performed on a cohort of patients with diabetic and idiopathic gastroparesis, revealing new patterns of human dysrhythmia. A new classification scheme for abnormalities of human gastric slow wave initiation and conduction is proposed. Finally, the evidence for high-frequency gastric electrical stimulation is reviewed, prior to the presentation of a new 'entrainment mapping' method for better assessing gastric pacing protocols. In total, this work constitutes a coordinated series of advances that offer a strengthened foundation for investigating and managing gastric electrical abnormalities. It is hoped that these new methods and findings will translate into future clinical advances, to improve the diagnosis and treatment of these complex patient populations.

Book Wittgenstein s Philosophical Investigations

Download or read book Wittgenstein s Philosophical Investigations written by Arif Ahmed and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in 1953, Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations had a deeply unsettling effect upon our most basic philosophical ideas concerning thought, sensation and language. Its claim that philosophical questions of meaning necessitate a close analysis of the way we use language continues to influence Anglo-American philosophy today. However, its compressed and dialogic prose is not always easy to follow. This collection of essays deepens but also challenges our understanding of the work's major themes, such as the connection between meaning and use, the nature of concepts, thought and intentionality, and language games. Bringing together leading philosophers and Wittgenstein scholars, it offers a genuinely critical approach and demonstrating Wittgenstein's relevance for contemporary philosophy. This volume will appeal to readers interested in the later Wittgenstein, in addition to those interested in the philosophy of language, the philosophy of mind, metaphysics and epistemology.

This book was released on 2004-10-21 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this new introduction to a classic philosophical text, David Stern examines Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations. He gives particular attention to both the arguments of the Investigations and the way in which the work is written, especially the role of dialogue in the book. While he concentrates on helping the reader to arrive at his or h er own interpretation of the primary text, he also provides guidance to the unusually wide range of existing interpretations, and to the reasons why the Investigations have inspired such a diversity of readings.

The current research trends in space and planetary mineralogy (meteorites, regolites, tektites) are also discussed. Though specifically intended for the specialist earth and planetary science readership, the book will be of interest to a broad range of scientists. It gathers the proceedings of the Tenth All-Russian Youth Scientific Conference “Minerals: structure, properties, methods of investigation.” Jointly organized by the Institute of Geology and Geochemistry, the Institute of Mineralogy (Urals Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and Ural Federal University, the event was held in Ekaterinburg, Russia, on May 27–June 1, 2019.

Book Scientific Investigation of Copies Fakes and Forgeries

Download or read book Scientific Investigation of Copies Fakes and Forgeries written by Paul Craddock and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-02-04 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The faking and forgery of works of art and antiquities is probably now more extensive than ever before. The frauds are aided by new technologies, from ink jet printers to epoxy resins, and driven by the astronomic prices realised on the global market. This book aims to provide a comprehensive survey of the subject over a wide range of materials, emphasising how the fakes and forgeries are produced and how they may be detected by technical and scientific examination. The subject is exemplified by numerous case studies, some turning out not to be as conclusive as is sometimes believed. The book is aimed at those likely to have a serious interest in these investigations, be they curator, collector, conservator or scientist. Paul Craddock has recently retired from the Department of Conservation, Documentation and Science at the British Museum, where he was a materials scientist.
