Book The Performance of Social Systems

Download or read book The Performance of Social Systems written by Francisco Parra-Luna and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parra-Luna (politics and sociology, Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain) presents 18 contributions which attempt to build models that can measure and analyze output/input quotients of global efficiency (i.e., satisfaction in goals) in the study of complex social systems--a topic which he argues has been incomprehensibly ignored by the social sciences. The papers are organized into sections on the definition of values, models for defining social performance, and operational approaches to the concept of social performance. Some articles explore the topic from the perspective of the global system, while others focus on specific areas within the social system. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

Book Biocultural Dimensions of Chronic Pain

Download or read book Biocultural Dimensions of Chronic Pain written by Maryann S. Bates and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on qualitative and quantitative studies in the United States and Puerto Rico, this book demonstrates the significant effects of patients' and health providers' ethnic and cultural backgrounds on the chronic pain experience. A biocultural model from medical anthropology is used to contribute to a better understanding of the interaction of biology and culture in human pain perception. In the studies described, the factors most often associated with successful adjustment to chronic pain are not biomedical but cultural, psychosocial, or the cultural, political, and economic contexts of medical care, compensation and rehabilitation. Truly multi-disciplinary chronic pain treatment programs must be staffed by providers knowledgeable in cultural relativity and cultural self-awareness and should integrate a cultural assessment with an individualized rehabilitation and biopsychosocial treatment plan for each patient.

Book Culture and the Cuban State

Download or read book Culture and the Cuban State written by Yvon Grenier and published by Lexington Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Culture and the Cuban State examines the politics of culture in communist Cuba. It focuses on cultural policy, censorship, and the political participation of artists, writers and academics such as Tania Bruguera, Jesús Díaz, Rafael Hernández, Kcho, Reynier Leyva Novo, Leonardo Padura, and José Toirac. The cultural field is important for the reproduction of the regime in place, given its pretense and ambition to be eternally “revolutionary” and to lead a genuine “cultural revolution”. Cultural actors must be mobilized and handled with care, given their presumed disposition to speak their mind and to cherish their autonomy. This book argues that cultural actors also seek recognition by the main (for a long time the only) sponsor and patron of the art in Cuba: the “curator state”. The “curator state” is also a “gatekeeper state,” arbitrarily and selectively opening and closing the space for public expression and for access to foreign currencies and the global market. The time when everything was either mandatory or forbidden is over in Cuba. The regime seems to have learned from egregious mistakes that led to a massive exodus of artists, writers and academics. In a country where things change so everything could stay the same, the controlled opening in the cultural field, playing on the actors' ambition and fear, illuminates a broader phenomenon: the evolving rules of the political game in the longest standing dictatorship of the hemisphere.

Book Peripheral Nerve

  • Publisher : Duke University Press
  • Release : 2020-07-24
  • ISBN : 1478012226
  • Pages : 226 pages

Download or read book Peripheral Nerve written by Anne-Emanuelle Birn and published by Duke University Press. This book was released on 2020-07-24 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Buenos Aires psychoanalysts resisting imperialism. Brazilian parasitologists embracing communism as an antidote to rural misery. Nicaraguan revolutionaries welcoming Cuban health cooperation. Chilean public health reformers gauging domestic approaches against their Soviet and Western counterparts. As explored in Peripheral Nerve, these and accompanying accounts problematize existing understandings of how the Cold War unfolded in Latin America generally and in the health and medical realms more specifically. Bringing together scholars from across the Americas, this volume chronicles the experiences of Latin American physicians, nurses, medical scientists, and reformers who interacted with dominant U.S. and European players and sought alternative channels of health and medical solidarity with the Soviet Union and via South-South cooperation. Throughout, Peripheral Nerve highlights how Latin American health professionals accepted, rejected, and adapted foreign involvement; manipulated the rivalry between the United States and the USSR; and forged local variants that they projected internationally. In so doing, this collection reveals the multivalent nature of Latin American health politics, offering a significant contribution to Cold War history. Contributors. Cheasty Anderson, Anne-Emanuelle Birn, Katherine E. Bliss, Gilberto Hochman, Jennifer L. Lambe, Nicole Pacino, Carlos Henrique Assunção Paiva, Jadwiga E. Pieper Mooney, Raúl Necochea López, Marco A. Ramos, Gabriela Soto Laveaga
