Book Operations Research Proceedings 2003

Download or read book Operations Research Proceedings 2003 written by Dino Ahr and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of papers referring to lectures presented at the symposium "Operations Research 2003" (OR03) held at the Ruprecht Karls-Universitiit Heidelberg, September 3 - 5, 2003. This international con ference took place under the auspices of the German Operations Research So ciety (GOR) and of Dr. Erwin Teufel, prime minister of Baden-Wurttemberg. The symposium had about 500 participants from countries all over the world. It attracted academians and practitioners working in various field of Opera tions Research and provided them with the most recent advances in Opera tions Research and related areas in Economics, Mathematics, and Computer Science. The program consisted of 4 plenary and 13 semi-plenary talks and more than 300 contributed papers selected by the program committee to be presented in 17 sections. Due to a limited number of pages available for the proceedings volume, the length of each article as well as the total number of accepted contributions had to be restricted. Submitted manuscripts have therefore been reviewed and 62 of them have been selected for publication. This refereeing procedure has been strongly supported by the section chairmen and we would like to express our gratitude to them. Finally, we also would like to thank Dr. Werner Muller from Springer-Verlag for his support in publishing this proceedings volume.

  • Pages : 172 pages

Download or read book TransMath written by Peregrina Quintela and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-10-08 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book "TransMath - Innovative Solutions from Mathematical Technology" has been conceived as a tool for the dissemination of scientific knowledge. This publication is addressed to those companies with innovation needs that could be met through mathematical technology. The book maps both existing and possible interactions and connections that enable technology transfer between Spanish mathematical research and industrial and business sectors. Businesses can determine the level of implementation and demand for such technology within their sector and understand the benefits and innovations achieved in other companies and industries with the application of mathematical techniques. The information is classified into eleven sectors of economic activity: Biomedicine & Health; Construction; Economics & Finance; Energy & Environment; Food; ICT; Logistics & Transport; Management & Tourism; Metal & Machinery; Public Administration; and Technical Services.

Book Real world Multi objective System Engineering

Download or read book Real world Multi objective System Engineering written by Nadia Nedjah and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2005 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Real-world engineering problems often require concurrent optimisation of several design objectives, which are conflicting in most of the cases. Such an optimisation is generally called multi-objective or multi-criterion optimisation. The area of research that applies evolutionary methodologies to multi-objective optimisation is of special and growing interest. It brings a solution to many yet-opened real-world problems and questions. Generally, multi-objective engineering problems have no single optimal design, but several solutions of equal efficiency allowing different trade-offs. The decision maker's preferences are normally used to select the most adequate design. Such preferences may be dictated before or after the optimisation takes place. They may also be introduced interactively at different levels of the optimisation process. Multi-objective optimisation methods can be subdivided into classical and evolutionary. The classical methods usually aim at a single solution while the evolutionary methods target a whole set of so-called Pareto-optimal solutions. of the evolutionary multi-objective optimisation research area and related new trends. Furthermore, it reports many innovative designs yielded by the application of such optimisation methods. The contents of the book are divided into two main parts: evolutionary multi-objective optimisation and evolutionary multi-objective designs.

Book Stochastic Versus Fuzzy Approaches to Multiobjective Mathematical Programming under Uncertainty

Download or read book Stochastic Versus Fuzzy Approaches to Multiobjective Mathematical Programming under Uncertainty written by Shi-Yu Huang and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 425 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations Research is a field whose major contribution has been to propose a rigorous fonnulation of often ill-defmed problems pertaining to the organization or the design of large scale systems, such as resource allocation problems, scheduling and the like. While this effort did help a lot in understanding the nature of these problems, the mathematical models have proved only partially satisfactory due to the difficulty in gathering precise data, and in formulating objective functions that reflect the multi-faceted notion of optimal solution according to human experts. In this respect linear programming is a typical example of impressive achievement of Operations Research, that in its detenninistic fonn is not always adapted to real world decision-making : everything must be expressed in tenns of linear constraints ; yet the coefficients that appear in these constraints may not be so well-defined, either because their value depends upon other parameters (not accounted for in the model) or because they cannot be precisely assessed, and only qualitative estimates of these coefficients are available. Similarly the best solution to a linear programming problem may be more a matter of compromise between various criteria rather than just minimizing or maximizing a linear objective function. Lastly the constraints, expressed by equalities or inequalities between linear expressions, are often softer in reality that what their mathematical expression might let us believe, and infeasibility as detected by the linear programming techniques can often been coped with by making trade-offs with the real world.
