Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Inequity of Avoidable Mortality written by Javier Hernando Eslava Schmalbach and published by Facultad de Medicina. Universidad Nacional de Colombia. This book was released on 2022 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the research results obtained by Grupo de Equidad en Salud (Health Equity Group), in relation to the development of an indicator of inequity in avoidable mortality, consisting of a methodology that allows knowing, in a consolidated way, the state of the inequality in avoidable mortality based on the variants included in the development of the indicator itself; also, an analysis of global and local data allows realistically understanding the dimension of the problem in both contexts. This book provides additional elements of analysis in order to assess the inadequate role of health systems in solving the most sensitive problems affecting vulnerable populations. On the other hand, conceptual elements around the issue of inequity, as well as the results of a systematic review of the literature related to the different ways of measuring disparities, gaps or inequities in health, are presented here to help the reader approach the development of new conceptual or measurement proposals. This book is intended to contribute to the understanding of the issue, and to encourage joint solutions to avoidable problems of high social cost.

Download or read book Confronting Change written by Huberto Juárez Núñez and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1998 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autoworkers find themselves in a rapidly changing world as transnational corporations seek new forms of work organization and new boundaries for a North American auto industry. Inside the factory, management pursues new models of "lean production" that require workers to produce more with less—less time, less support, less material—in an atmosphere of accelerated and intensified labor. Outside the factory, "freetrade" policies and regional investment strategies widen the reach of transnational corporations, creating new opportunities in Mexico, Canada, and the U.S. for pitting worker against worker in a mutually destructive competition for jobs. In Confronting Change, researchers from a diverse range of universities and unions explore the impact of these changes on work and workers. The case studies and analyses show the wide range of potential outcomes as workers struggle to become actors, rather than victims, in the emerging North American auto industry.
Download or read book Etiopathogenic Theories and Models in Depression written by Juan Pablo Jiménez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reviews the different theories and models that seek to explain the causes of depression from different perspectives, from the molecular to the socio-cultural level. Depression is a complex psychopathological construct of high phenotypic heterogeneity, which must be understood as a phenomenon in which different explanatory levels interact with each other. However, very little is known about this interaction. The aim of this book is to provide clinical psychologists and psychiatrists a better knowledge of the interaction of different etiopathogenic levels, in order to help these professionals make better therapeutic decisions when treating depressed patients. Chapters in this volume review etiopathogenic theories and models of depression developed by different disciplines and fields of research, such as clinical psychology, psychiatry, genetics, neurobiology, psychophisiology, psychoneuroendocrinology and psychosocial studies, and examine certain conditions where the integrated consideration of different explanatory levels illuminates how depression originates and is maintained. In each chapter, authors critically review the state of the art in their field of expertise and explain the weak points of their own theories and their possible openness or connection to alternative theories or models. Etiopathogenic Theories and Models in Depression will be a valuable resource for clinical psychologists, psychiatrists and other health professionals working with depressed patients, as well as to researchers investigating how depression originates and is maintained, presenting an integrated perspective of high translational value for clinical practice.

Download or read book Neoliberalism Globalization and Inequalities written by Vicente Navarro and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-06 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since U.S. President Reagan and U.K. Prime Minister Thatcher, a major ideology (under the name of economic science) has been expanded worldwide that claims that the best policies to stimulate human development are those that reduce the role of the state in economic and social lives: privatizing public services and public enterprises, deregulating the mobility of capital and labor, eliminating protectionism, and reducing public social protection. This ideology, called 'neoliberalism,' has guided the globalization of economic activity and become the conventional wisdom in international agencies and institutions (such as the IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organization, and the technical agencies of the United Nations, including the WHO). Reproduced in the 'Washington consensus' in the United States and the 'Brussels consensus' in the European Union, this ideology has guided policies widely accepted as the only ones possible and advisable. This book assembles a series of articles that challenge that ideology. Written by well-known scholars, these articles question each of the tenets of neoliberal doctrine, showing how the policies guided by this ideology have adversely affected human development in the countries where they have been implemented.

Download or read book Declining Inequality in Latin America written by Luis Felipe Lopez-Calva and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2010-08-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Brookings Institution Press and United Nations Development Programme publication Latin America is often singled out for its high and persistent income inequality. Toward the end of the 1990s, however, income concentration began to fall across the region. Of the seventeen countries for which comparable data are available, twelve have experienced a decline, particularly since 2000. This book is among the first efforts to understand what happened in these countries and why. Led by editors Felipe López-Calva and Nora Lustig, a panel of distinguished economists undertakes in-depth analyses of Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, and Peru. In addition, they provide essential background in the form of overviews of the relationship between markets and inequality, the political economy of redistribution, and the evolution of income inequality in the advanced industrialized economies. Two factors account for much of the decline in inequality: a decrease in the wage gap between skilled and low-skilled labor, and an increase in government transfers targeted to the poor. Thanks to the timeliness and sophistication of these essays, Declining Inequality in Latin America is likely to become a standard reference in its field.
