Book Inverse Nodal Problems Finding the Potential from Nodal Lines

Download or read book Inverse Nodal Problems Finding the Potential from Nodal Lines written by Ole H. Hald and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1996 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper we consider an eigenvalue problem which arises in the study of rectangular membranes. The mathematical model is an elliptic equation, in potential form, with Dirichlet boundary conditions. We show that the potential is uniquely determined, up to an additive constant, by a subset of the nodal lines of the eigenfunctions. A formula is shown which, when the additive constant is given, yields an approximation to the potential at a dense set of points. We present an estimate for the error made by the formula. A substantial part of this work is the derivation of the asymptotic forms for a rich set of eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for a large set of rectangles.

Book Inverse Problems in Vibration

Download or read book Inverse Problems in Vibration written by G.M.L. Gladwell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-08-10 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first, 1986, edition of this book, inverse problems in vibration were interpreted strictly: problems concerning the reconstruction of a unique, undamped vibrating system, of a specified type, from specified vibratory behaviour, particularly specified natural frequencies and/or natural mode shapes. In this new edition the scope of the book has been widened to include topics such as isospectral systems- families of systems which all exhibit some specified behaviour; applications of the concept of Toda flow; new, non-classical approaches to inverse Sturm-Liouville problems; qualitative properties of the modes of some finite element models; damage identification. With its emphasis on analysis, on qualitative results, rather than on computation, the book will appeal to researchers in vibration theory, matrix analysis, differential and integral equations, matrix analysis, non-destructive testing, modal analysis, vibration isolation, etc. "This book is a necessary addition to the library of engineers and mathematicians working in vibration theory." Book Surveys on Solution Methods for Inverse Problems

Download or read book Surveys on Solution Methods for Inverse Problems written by David Colton and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems are concerned with determining causes for observed or desired effects. Problems of this type appear in many application fields both in science and in engineering. The mathematical modelling of inverse problems usually leads to ill-posed problems, i.e., problems where solutions need not exist, need not be unique or may depend discontinuously on the data. For this reason, numerical methods for solving inverse problems are especially difficult, special methods have to be developed which are known under the term "regularization methods". This volume contains twelve survey papers about solution methods for inverse and ill-posed problems and about their application to specific types of inverse problems, e.g., in scattering theory, in tomography and medical applications, in geophysics and in image processing. The papers have been written by leading experts in the field and provide an up-to-date account of solution methods for inverse problems.

Book Inverse Problems For Electrical Networks

Download or read book Inverse Problems For Electrical Networks written by Edward B Curtis and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-03-02 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a very timely exposition of part of an important subject which goes under the general name of “inverse problems”. The analogous problem for continuous media has been very much studied, with a great deal of difficult mathematics involved, especially partial differential equations. Some of the researchers working on the inverse conductivity problem for continuous media (the problem of recovering the conductivity inside from measurements on the outside) have taken an interest in the authors' analysis of this similar problem for resistor networks. The authors' treatment of inverse problems for electrical networks is at a fairly elementary level. It is accessible to advanced undergraduates, and mathematics students at the graduate level. The topics are of interest to mathematicians working on inverse problems, and possibly to electrical engineers. A few techniques from other areas of mathematics have been brought together in the treatment. It is this amalgamation of such topics as graph theory, medial graphs and matrix algebra, as well as the analogy to inverse problems for partial differential equations, that makes the book both original and interesting.

Book Method of Spectral Mappings in the Inverse Problem Theory

Download or read book Method of Spectral Mappings in the Inverse Problem Theory written by Vacheslav A. Yurko and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2013-10-10 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inverse problems of spectral analysis consist in recovering operators from their spectral characteristics. Such problems often appear in mathematics, mechanics, physics, electronics, geophysics, meteorology and other branches of natural science. This monograph is devoted to inverse problems of spectral analysis for ordinary differential equations. Its aim ist to present the main results on inverse spectral problems using the so-called method of spectral mappings, which is one of the main tools in inverse spectral theory. The book consists of three chapters: In Chapter 1 the method of spectral mappings is presented in the simplest version for the Sturm-Liouville operator. In Chapter 2 the inverse problem of recovering higher-order differential operators of the form, on the half-line and on a finite interval, is considered. In Chapter 3 inverse spectral problems for differential operators with nonlinear dependence on the spectral parameter are studied.

Inverse problems can be found in many areas of engineering mechanics, and have many successful applications. They are concerned with estimating the unknown input and/or the characteristics of a system given certain aspects of its output. The mathematical challenges of such problems have to be overcome through the development of new computational schemes, regularization techniques, objective functionals, and experimental procedures. The papers within this represent an excellent reference for all in the field. Book Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures

Download or read book Dynamic Methods for Damage Detection in Structures written by Antonino Morassi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2008-12-11 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Non destructive testing aimed at monitoring, structural identification and di- nostics is of strategic importance in many branches of civil and mechanical - gineering. This type of tests is widely practiced and directly affects topical issues regarding the design of new buildings and the repair and monitoring of existing ones. The load bearing capacity of a structure can now be evaluated using well established mechanical modelling methods aided by computing facilities of great capability. However, to ensure reliable results, models must be calibrated with - curate information on the characteristics of materials and structural components. To this end, non destructive techniques are a useful tool from several points of view. Particularly, by measuring structural response, they provide guidance on the validation of structural descriptions or of the mathematical models of material behaviour. Diagnostic engineering is a crucial area for the application of non destructive testing methods. Repeated tests over time can indicate the emergence of p- sible damage occurring during the structure's lifetime and provide quantitative estimates of the level of residual safety.

Book Progress In Nonlinear Analysis Proceedings Of The Second International Conference On Nonlinear Analysis

Download or read book Progress In Nonlinear Analysis Proceedings Of The Second International Conference On Nonlinear Analysis written by Kung-ching Chang and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-07-24 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The real world is complicated, as a result of which most mathematical models arising from mechanics, physics, chemistry and biology are nonlinear. Based on the efforts of scientists in the 20th century, especially in the last three decades, topological, variational, geometrical and other methods have developed rapidly in nonlinear analysis, which made direct studies of nonlinear models possible in many cases, and provided global information on nonlinear problems which was not available by the traditional linearization method. This volume reflects that rapid development in many areas of nonlinear analysis.
