Book Adaptive Methods in Underwater Acoustics

Download or read book Adaptive Methods in Underwater Acoustics written by H.G. Urban and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 763 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Adaptive Methods in Underwater Acoustics was held on 30 July - 10 August 1984 in LLineburg, Germany. The Institute was primarily concerned with signal processing for underwater appl ica tions. The majority of the presentations, when taken together, yield a definite picture of the present status of understanding of adaptive and high resolution processing, setting out the progress achieved over the past four years together with the major problem areas remaining. Major effort was made to obtain a commensurate contribution of tutorial and advanced research papers. It is my hope that the material in this volume may be equally well suited for students getting an introduction to some of the basic problems in underwater signal processing and for the professionals who may obtain an up-to-date overview of the present state of the art. This might be especially useful in view of the controversy and lack of adequate interrelationships which have marked this rapidly expanding field in the past. Practical reinforcement of this picture is provided by the material concerning digital and optical processing technology, giving some guidance to achievable adaptive and high resolution techniques with current processing devices. The formal programme was extended and detailed by a series of six evening work shops on specific topics, during which informal discussions took place among the participants. Summaries of these workshops are also included in these Proceedings.

Book Oceanic Circulation Models Combining Data and Dynamics

Download or read book Oceanic Circulation Models Combining Data and Dynamics written by D.L.T. Anderson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book which is the outcome of a NATO-Advanced Study Institute on Mod elling the Ocean Circulation and Geochemical Tracer Transport is concerned with using models to infer the ocean circulation. Understanding our climate is one of the major problems of the late twentieth century. The possible climatic changes resulting from the rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide and other trace gases are of primary interest and the ocean pla. ys a ma. jor role in determining the magnitude, temporal evolution and regional distribution of those changes. Because of the poor observational basis the ocean general circulation is not well understood. The World Ocean Circulation Experiment (WOCE) which is now underway is an attempt to improve our knowledge of ocean dynamics and thermodynamics on global scales relevant to climate change. Despite those efforts, the oceanic data base is likely to remain scarce and it is crucial to use appropriate methods in order to extract the maximum amount of information from observations. The book contains a thorough analysis of methods to combine data of val'ious types with dynamical concepts, and to assimilate data directly into ocean models. The properties of geocl;temical tracers such as HC, He, Tritium and Freons and how they may be used to impose integral constraints on the ocean circulation are discussed.

Book Oceanographic and Geophysical Tomography

Download or read book Oceanographic and Geophysical Tomography written by Yves Desaubies and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In geophysics, tomography is a technique which deduces some physical properties of the medium from the perturbations encountered by waves propagating through it. Thus tomography draws on a variety of disciplines, such as wave propagation in heterogeneous media, statistical estimation and inverse theory, and numerical modeling. These subjects take different forms when applied to solid Earth geophysics or to physical oceanography. The aim of the 50th session of the Les Houches Summer School was to present in detail theoretical and practical aspects of tomography in geophysics and oceanography. One of the goals was to bring together students and practitioners of the two fields to teach, discuss and exchange ideas on all the components of tomography, to point out common approaches and to contrast various specific applications. The resulting book shows the diversity and vitality of this field of research and underlines the variety of disciplines involved.

Book The Long Term Upper Ocean Study Lotus

Download or read book The Long Term Upper Ocean Study Lotus written by Richard P. Trask and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 1178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: OCEANUS cruise number 129 (28 October - 4 November, 1982) was the eighth in a series of cruises to the Long Term Upper Ocean Study (LOTUS) area centered at 34 deg. N, 70 deg. W. In the LOTUS area seven SOFAR floats were launched, two moorings were recovered (a LOTUS surface mooring and a C.S. Draper Labs profiling current meter mooring), and a surface mooring which replaced the one recovered was set. Seven CTD stations were also completed in the LOTUS area. Outside the LOTUS area a subsurface mooring was set in the Gulf Stream in cooperation with H. Bryden's (WHOI) Gulf Stream Observations project, and a WHOI engineering mooring at Site D was recovered, examined and redeployed. In addition, several XBT sections were made, one along 70 deg. W between 40 deg. N and 34 deg. N, a second surveyed a cold core ring discovered during the trip to the LOTUS area and a third was made in the vicinity of the Gulf Stream Observations mooring. Part I of this report is a summary of the major cruise activities and part II presents the hydrographic data (CTD and XBT) collected during the cruise. (Author).

Book Experimental Acoustic Inversion Methods for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment

Download or read book Experimental Acoustic Inversion Methods for Exploration of the Shallow Water Environment written by Andrea Caiti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, research on acoustic remote sensing of the ocean has evolved considerably, especially in studying complex physical and biological processes in shallow water environments. To review the state of the art, an international workshop was held at Carvoeiro, Portugal, in March 1999, bringing together leading international researchers in the field. In contrast to much of the recent theoretical work, emphasis was placed on the experimental validation of the techniques. This volume, based on presentations at this workshop, summarizes a range of diverse and innovative applications. The invited contributions explore the use of acoustics to measure bottom properties and morphology, as well as to probe buried objects within the sediment. Within the water column, sound is applied to imaging of oceanographic features such as currents and tides or monitoring of marine life. Another key theme is the use of sound to solve geometric inverse problems for precise tracking of undersea vehicles. Audience: This volume should be useful both to the novice seeking an introduction to the field and to advanced researchers interested in the latest developments in acoustic sensing of the ocean environment. The workshop was sponsored by the Fundação para a Ciêcia e a Tecnologia (Portuguese Foundation for Science and Technology).
