This report describes methods and an IBM FORTRAN II program for the calculation of internal viscous and inviscid flow fields within the channels of a supersonic cascade. Methods included are: (1) a second order Belotserkovskii procedure for calculating the flow field around the forward part of blunt blades, (2) a general method of characteristics procedure for calculating supersonic flow fields, (3) automatic procedures for calculating interactions of shocks of the same and opposite families, shock interactions with a wall and with a vortex sheet or slipstream, envelope shock formation, and (4) a finite-difference procedure for calculating the laminar boundary layer, which includes a method of suction calculation for maintaining a non-separated boundary layer under an adverse pressure gradient. The program uses an iterated inverse method in the subsonic transonic region and a modification of the method of characteristics in the supersonic region. The displacement effect of the boundary layer is accounted for by a unique step-by-step method. Equilibrium radiation at the nonequilibrium temperature and composition is computed and used to calculate the radiant heating of the body nose assuming the shock layer is optically thin. An optional calculation of the effect of a magnetic field on the ionized flow in the nose region is included. The report concludes with the analysis of the nonequilibrium flow over a hemisphere cylinder at 14,000 fps. (Author).

Book excerpt: The method of characteristics is formulated for the computation of the supersonic flow of an inviscid, reacting gas over a smooth three-dimensional body. Various methods of constructing networks of bicharacteristic lines are examined from the point of view of numerical stability and accuracy. A new method of forming the network, which consists of projecting forward along streamlines from data points on specified data planes, is found to be most easily adopted to the particular requirements of nonequilibrium chemistry. The general method was coded for the IBM 7090 computer and the program demonstrated for the case of an ideal gas. Calculations were made for the case of an ideal gas. Calculations were made for the flow about a spherical-tip 15 degree half-angle cone at 10 degree angle of attack and a generalized elliptical body at zero incidence. Since the program yields the pressure distribution along specified streamlines, it is straightforward, in principle, to link it to a finite-rate chemistry stream tube program to treat three-dimensional, nonequilibrium flows.
