Constrained parts on the articulated figure are abstracted as end effectors, and the counterparts in the space are abstracted as goals. The goal (constraint) can be as simple as a position, an orientation, a weighted combination of position and orientation, a line, a plane, a direction, and so on, or it could be as complicated as a region in the space. An articulated figure consists of various segments connected together by joints has some degrees of freedom which are subject to joint limits and manual adjustment. This paper presents an efficient algorithm to adjust the joint angles subject to joint limits so that the set of end effectors concurrently attempt to achieve their respective goals. Users specify end effectors and goals: the program computes a final configuration in real time in the sense that actions appear to take no longer than actual physical activities would. If it is impossible to satisfy all the goals owing to the actual constraints, the program should end up with the best possibility according to the user's assignment of importances to each goal. The conference was organized in three simultaneous tracks: “Intelligent Control Systems and Optimization”, “Robotics and Automation” and “Systems Modeling, Signal Processing and Control”. The book is based on the same structure. ICINCO received 365 paper submissions, not including those of workshops, from 55 countries, in all continents. After a double blind paper review performed by the Program Committee only 34 submissions were accepted as full papers and thus selected for oral presentation, leading to a full paper acceptance ratio of 9%. Additional papers were accepted as short papers and posters. A further refinement was made after the conference, based also on the assessment of presentation quality, so that this book includes the extended and revised versions of the very best papers of ICINCO 2009. Our goal in this book is to identify the key design principles for cognitive development. We do this by bringing together insights from four areas: enactive cognitive science, developmental psychology, neurophysiology, and computational modelling. This results in roadmap comprising a set of forty-three guidelines for the design of a cognitive architecture and its deployment in a humanoid robot. The book includes a case study based on the iCub, an open-systems humanoid robot which has been designed specifically as a common platform for research on embodied cognitive systems .
