Book excerpt: Invasive species can alter the structure and function of ecosystems, reduce biological diversity, and directly change communities through predation, facilitation and competition. The invasive New Zealand mud snail (Potamopyrgus antipodarum) has varying effects on native species in ecosystems where it has been introduced. We used two different experimental designs to study the interactions between P. antipodarum and the native snail, Fossaria (Bakerilymnaea) bulimoides group in Polecat Creek, Wyoming. We predicted that P. antipodarum would compete with Fossaria because they co-occur and consume similar resources. In the first experiment, we investigated growth at low ambient levels of biomass of each species. We found that growth of Fossaria and P. antipodarum was reduced by the presence of all competitors and that Fossaria grew more in intraspecific than interspecific interactions. This result was probably caused by much higher ambient biomass of the invasive P. antipodarum in the interspecific interaction treatment. Therefore, in our second experiment, we investigated how the snails interacted at an equal, higher biomass. Although growth of Fossaria was nearly halted at this high biomass of competitors, P. antipodarum grew fourteen times faster than the native despite removing less algae. In the high biomass treatment, growth of P. antipodarum was facilitated by the presence of Fossaria. Overall, although growth of both snail species was reduced by the biomass of competitors, for Fossaria, growth was reduced at a rate that was four times higher than P. antipodarum. We concluded that any negative effects on Fossaria do not appear to be caused by traits of P. antipodarum, per se, but rather by a high biomass of snails that occurs when they are highly abundant.

Book excerpt: A persistent challenge for ecologists is characterizing patterns of diversity in community structure, and understanding the importance of species interactions that shape communities across environments. Both foundation and invasive species have strong influences on community diversity and structure, though they have historically been thought to have opposite effects. While foundation species provide habitat to other species and have a net positive effect on diversity, invasive species tend to modify the habitat, displace native species, and decrease diversity. However, there are more recent examples of positive interactions between invasive species and native species, where invasive species provide novel or superior habitat for the community. Furthermore, the ranges of invasive species can encompass a wide variety of environments and communities, thus both their traits and effects on the community are likely to differ across environments. Understanding whether invasive species exhibit context-dependent trait differentiation and community-level effects is useful for understanding how their net effects on the community may differ throughout their invasive range. Watersipora subtorquata is an invasive bryozoan that has been considered a foundation species and has spread to a wide range of environments throughout the West coast of the United States, Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and South Africa. Using field surveys, year-long monitoring, and experiments in two harbor environments within the California range of W. subtorquata, I examined 1) spatial variation in the abundance of W. subtorquata and community structure and diversity, 2) how traits of W. subtorquata differ temporally across environments, and 3) to what extent W. subtorquata benefits the community as a foundation species and whether the direction and magnitude of its effects on the community differ across its invasive range. Field surveys revealed that fouling community diversity significantly differed across environments, and had a non-linear relationship with W. subtorquata abundance that differed between environments. Year-long monitoring provided evidence that W. subtorquata may be a better competitor for space in the seasonally variable environment of Bodega Harbor, and greater recruitment in the more stable environment of Alamitos Bay. Finally, a field experiment showed that while W. subtorquata does not facilitate diversity of mobile or sessile invertebrates, it does alter the community structure. It facilitates diversity of some arthropod and isopod species, but competes strongly with sessile tunicate and bryozoan species for space on the tiles. However, these net effects differed across environments, highlighting the potential for W. subtorquata to have varied effects on communities as it expands its range.
