Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The series is devoted to the publication of monographs and high-level textbooks in mathematics, mathematical methods and their applications. Apart from covering important areas of current interest, a major aim is to make topics of an interdisciplinary nature accessible to the non-specialist. The works in this series are addressed to advanced students and researchers in mathematics and theoretical physics. In addition, it can serve as a guide for lectures and seminars on a graduate level. The series de Gruyter Studies in Mathematics was founded ca. 35 years ago by the late Professor Heinz Bauer and Professor Peter Gabriel with the aim to establish a series of monographs and textbooks of high standard, written by scholars with an international reputation presenting current fields of research in pure and applied mathematics. While the editorial board of the Studies has changed with the years, the aspirations of the Studies are unchanged. In times of rapid growth of mathematical knowledge carefully written monographs and textbooks written by experts are needed more than ever, not least to pave the way for the next generation of mathematicians. In this sense the editorial board and the publisher of the Studies are devoted to continue the Studies as a service to the mathematical community. Please submit any book proposals to Niels Jacob.

Book Classifications of Abelian Groups and Pontrjagin Duality

Download or read book Classifications of Abelian Groups and Pontrjagin Duality written by Peter Loth and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1998-09-16 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first part of this book, the reader is introduced to the theory of abelian groups focusing on the classification problem. The structure of totally projective p-groups is determined and Hill's version of Ulm's Theorem is proved. It is shown how this classification theorem is generalized to larger classes of abelian groups such as the balanced projective groups and Warfield groups. A variety of characterizations of these groups is proved generalizing corresponding results for totally projective p-groups. In the second part of this text, the author studies certain classes of compact abelian groups using Pontrjagin duality. After providing the necessary tools for dualization, the structure of the compact groups dual to the totally projective p-groups, balanced projective groups, and Warfield groups is established. Finally, the duals of completely decomposable groups and Butler groups are studied. Supplemented with numerous exercises and research problems, this book is suitable for graduate students, as well as undergraduate students with a sufficient background in algebra and topology.

Book Classification and Orbit Equivalence Relations

Download or read book Classification and Orbit Equivalence Relations written by Greg Hjorth and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 2000 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Actions of Polish groups are ubiquitous in mathematics. In certain branches of ergodic theory and functional analysis, one finds a systematic study of the group of measure-preserving transformations and the unitary group. In logic, the analysis of countable models intertwines with results concerning the actions of the infinite symmetric group. This text develops the theory of Polish group actions entirely from scratch, ultimately presenting a coherent theory of the resulting orbit equivalence classes that may allow complete classification by invariants of an indicated form. The book concludes with a criterion for an orbit equivalence relation classifiable by countable structures considered up to isomorphism. This self-contained volume offers a complete treatment of this active area of current research and develops a difficult general theory classifying a class of mathematical objects up to some relevant notion of isomorphism or equivalence.

Download or read book Abelian Groups written by L. Fuchs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abelian Groups deals with the theory of abelian or commutative groups, with special emphasis on results concerning structure problems. More than 500 exercises of varying degrees of difficulty, with and without hints, are included. Some of the exercises illuminate the theorems cited in the text by providing alternative developments, proofs or counterexamples of generalizations. Comprised of 16 chapters, this volume begins with an overview of the basic facts on group theory such as factor group or homomorphism. The discussion then turns to direct sums of cyclic groups, divisible groups, and direct summands and pure subgroups, as well as Kulikov's basic subgroups. Subsequent chapters focus on the structure theory of the three main classes of abelian groups: the primary groups, the torsion-free groups, and the mixed groups. Applications of the theory are also considered, along with other topics such as homomorphism groups and endomorphism rings; the Schreier extension theory with a discussion of the group of extensions and the structure of the tensor product. In addition, the book examines the theory of the additive group of rings and the multiplicative group of fields, along with Baer's theory of the lattice of subgroups. This book is intended for young research workers and students who intend to familiarize themselves with abelian groups.

Download or read book Abelian Groups written by László Fuchs and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-12 with total page 762 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by one of the subject’s foremost experts, this book focuses on the central developments and modern methods of the advanced theory of abelian groups, while remaining accessible, as an introduction and reference, to the non-specialist. It provides a coherent source for results scattered throughout the research literature with lots of new proofs. The presentation highlights major trends that have radically changed the modern character of the subject, in particular, the use of homological methods in the structure theory of various classes of abelian groups, and the use of advanced set-theoretical methods in the study of un decidability problems. The treatment of the latter trend includes Shelah’s seminal work on the un decidability in ZFC of Whitehead’s Problem; while the treatment of the former trend includes an extensive (but non-exhaustive) study of p-groups, torsion-free groups, mixed groups and important classes of groups arising from ring theory. To prepare the reader to tackle these topics, the book reviews the fundamentals of abelian group theory and provides some background material from category theory, set theory, topology and homological algebra. An abundance of exercises are included to test the reader’s comprehension, and to explore noteworthy extensions and related sidelines of the main topics. A list of open problems and questions, in each chapter, invite the reader to take an active part in the subject’s further development.

Book A Course in Constructive Algebra

Download or read book A Course in Constructive Algebra written by Ray Mines and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 355 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The constructive approach to mathematics has enjoyed a renaissance, caused in large part by the appearance of Errett Bishop's book Foundations of constr"uctiue analysis in 1967, and by the subtle influences of the proliferation of powerful computers. Bishop demonstrated that pure mathematics can be developed from a constructive point of view while maintaining a continuity with classical terminology and spirit; much more of classical mathematics was preserved than had been thought possible, and no classically false theorems resulted, as had been the case in other constructive schools such as intuitionism and Russian constructivism. The computers created a widespread awareness of the intuitive notion of an effecti ve procedure, and of computation in principle, in addi tion to stimulating the study of constructive algebra for actual implementation, and from the point of view of recursive function theory. In analysis, constructive problems arise instantly because we must start with the real numbers, and there is no finite procedure for deciding whether two given real numbers are equal or not (the real numbers are not discrete) . The main thrust of constructive mathematics was in the direction of analysis, although several mathematicians, including Kronecker and van der waerden, made important contributions to construc tive algebra. Heyting, working in intuitionistic algebra, concentrated on issues raised by considering algebraic structures over the real numbers, and so developed a handmaiden'of analysis rather than a theory of discrete algebraic structures.

Book Abelian Groups and Modules

Download or read book Abelian Groups and Modules written by Alberto Facchini and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On the 26th of November 1992 the organizing committee gathered together, at Luigi Salce's invitation, for the first time. The tradition of abelian groups and modules Italian conferences (Rome 77, Udine 85, Bressanone 90) needed to be kept up by one more meeting. Since that first time it was clear to us that our goal was not so easy. In fact the main intended topics of abelian groups, modules over commutative rings and non commutative rings have become so specialized in the last years that it looked really ambitious to fit them into only one meeting. Anyway, since everyone of us shared the same mathematical roots, we did want to emphasize a common link. So we elaborated the long symposium schedule: three days of abelian groups and three days of modules over non commutative rings with a two days' bridge of commutative algebra in between. Many of the most famous names in these fields took part to the meeting. Over 140 participants, both attending and contributing the 18 Main Lectures and 64 Communications (see list on page xv) provided a really wide audience for an Algebra meeting. Now that the meeting is over, we can say that our initial feeling was right.
