At the fictitious company GreenGarb, twenty-something Jason is discontent in his entry-level position, feeling his skills and knowledge are being underutilized; mid-level manager Tracy is overwhelmed by her own workload and needy direct reports; and CEO Helen needs them to sort it out productively. Jason's grandfather Charlie plants the seed of a new perspective in Jason mind: before he can get a raise, he must prove he deserves the raise. Offers solid advice for determining just how "invaluable" you are to your boss and customers Shows how to create a productive framework of cooperation in the workplace Includes an appendix of worksheets and examples that offer concrete tools that can be applied immediately The Myth of Multitasking taught readers how to take control of their time. Book excerpt: As organizations face a loss of people due to retirement, resignation, or disability, leaders are paying more attention to their talent management strategies, from grooming internal successors to aggressively recruiting from their competitors. The need is most acute in technical and other “knowledge” areas, where the loss of a particular skill set demands an equally focused response. The book’s structure follows a typical talent cycle, from identifying recruitment challenges, to hiring and training top talent, to building career development initiatives, and finally, to laying the groundwork for the next generation. Book Captain Scott s Invaluable Assistant Edgar Evans

Download or read book Captain Scott s Invaluable Assistant Edgar Evans written by Isobel Williams and published by The History Press. This book was released on 2011-11-30 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petty Officer Edgar Evans was Captain's Scott's 'giant worker' and his 'invaluable assistant'. He went with Scott on both the British Antarctic Expeditions of the early 1900s – the 'Discovery' expedition of 1901 and the 'Terra Nova' expedition in 1910 – distinguishing himself on both. In 1903, with Scott, Edgar made the first long and arduous sortie onto the Plateau of Victoria Land. The journey highlighted Edgar's common sense, strength, courage, wit and unflappability. Thus it came as no surprise when, in 1911, Edgar was chosen by Scott to be one of the five men to go on the final attempt at the South Pole. Tragically the 'Welsh Giant' was the first to die on the ill-fated return, and posthumously Edgar was blamed in some quarters for causing the deaths of the whole party. It was suggested that his failure was due to his relative lack of education, which made him less able to endure the conditions than his well-educated companions. Isobel Williams repudiates this shameful suggestion and redresses the balance of attention paid to the upper and lower-deck members of Scott's famous expeditions.
