Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lectures of the Course to the Preparatory Medical Class, Columbia, S. C The body of man is modified by the impressions of the emotional and intellectual element of his constitution, so as to render his organism far more complex and interesting than that of other animals, and yet there is enough in common with them to elicit our most pro found consideration. It is not simply a combination of parts under the in uence of the ordinary relations of the physical world, but there is a mysterious element of life associated with the elements of the body, which qualifies and enhances every function. While it is uo part of my plan to attempt any elucidation of the connection of mind and matter or soul and body, it devolves upon me to note some of the changes which result from this relation constituting the physico vital phenomena of the organization of man. In my use of words there is no reference to the dogmatism of former days; but with the sole View of expressing simply, the thing intended, it will be my object to use terms which will be readily comprehended, and avail myself of technicalities only when they are essential to convey acor rect idea of the subject. This book was released on 2017-12 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture, Preliminary to a Course on the Institutes of Medicine: Delivered on the 9th of October, 1850, Before the Medical Class of the University of Pennsylvania The atmosphere is vitiated and contaminated in various ways. Respi ration is the most common. Accurate observations have established that from 4 to 5 per cent. Of carbonic acid is contained in the air expired by a. Male adult, and a somewhat larger per centage of oxygen has disappeared. The amount of air passing through the lungs in 124 hours, is about 400 cubic feet, which loses about 20 cubic feet of oxygen, and receives about 16 cubic feet of carbonic acid. The same air breathed three or four times becomes poisonous. One per cent. Of carbonic acid in the air, if breathed for some time, is prejudicial and death has been caused by a vitiation of not more than 12 or 15 per cent. These facts show the importance of free ventilation to the preservation of health, and the free exercise of the functions, mental and physical. Reese and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-15 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture Delivered Before the Medical Class in Castleton Medical College, at the Opening of the Fall Session, 1842 To prepare you to think correctly, and thus theorize for yourselves, it will be necessary to review the ancient and modern doctrines of general and special medicine, including the theories which have successively had their day among medical philosophers. These with the facts by which they were attempted to be sustained by their authors and adherents, will constitute the ground-work of the pres ent course. In this brief and cursory view of the past, which is all that our time will permit, you will find that much, very much which is true in medicine is as old as Hippocrates, many of his theories having been based upon observation and experience, and being there fore of necessity immutable. His errors were few and inconsidera ble, even as discoverable in the advanced state of our knowledge at this day, notwithstanding the disadvantages under which he pur sued his researches, ia ignorance of human structure, except so far as it could be revealed to him by the dissection of inferior animals. Under these circumstances we are constrained at this day to marvel, not at his errors, but that he could, by possibility, have acquired the knowledge, of which his writings give evidence. All modern physicians at the present day regard Anatomy, healthy and morbid, as constituting the elements of all the accuracy to which we can attain in medicine, and their theories are constructed by studying symptoms in reference to such anatomy, and by testing the powers of remedies by experience. It is upon facts such as these, that our science is now made rigidly one of induction. Simi lar facts have been accumulating for centuries, and as they are tan gible in their character, and susceptible of demonstration by every inquirer for himself, the constancy of their recurrence in the hands and under the eye of every observer, affords a protection against any considerable error or fallacy. Book An Introductory Lecture Delivered in the Medical College of Ohio

Download or read book An Introductory Lecture Delivered in the Medical College of Ohio written by M. B. Wright and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-05 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture, Delivered in the Medical College of Ohio: Session 1860-1 It has been an established custom for the Dean, or some other member of the Faculty, at the commencement of a course of medical lectures, to address the class upon any subject which might seem appropriate to the occasion. I endeavored to convince my colleagues that an address from some one of them would be more acceptable than from my self; but, they would neither acknowledge the force of my arguments, nor lay aside their native modesty. I do not propose to discuss any branch or special subject in medicine. But, as some of us will be associated during the four long months that are before us, it may not be nu profitable to consider for a short time our individual and rel ative duties. The professor and the student have both a laborious task before them, requiring not only the constant exercise of their reasoning faculties, but a pleasurable state of feeling and-an unfaltering will. To stop by the way side and talk with the adventurer about the land of gold, and count the many miles that may intervene, will prove to be an ineffectual way to se cure its treasures. The student in pursuit of knowledge is in a similar situation. He has a thousand obstacles to over come, requiring industry, patience, and a resolute purpose. It is a common remark, that while the physician is dis charging his duty, he is engaged ih a conflict with death. Such a claim in behalf of the profession we should esteem the height of presumption. When that grim messenger comes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory Lecture: Delivered to the Class of Institutes of Medicine, in Jefferson Medical College, October 19th, 1848 Although habituated, for a long series of years, to meet a class of medical students, such an occasion as this never fails to produce ln me mixed emotions. Nor do I envy the teacher who can enter unmoved upon such arduous and responsible duties as devolve upon me here. Did not the generous greet ings of young, warm-hearted disciples agitate him - whilst they at the same time encourage him to put forth all his efforts in their behalf, that he may enable them to fulfil the elevated pur poses for Which they left the paternal roof. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductory Lecture, Delivered in the College of Physicians and Surgeons of the Upper Mississippi, Session of 1849-50 It is customary with those who desire to keep pace with the progress of reform in medicine, to place themselves in the attitude of apologists for any movement which may be regarded as having a tendency to obstruct this progress; and it may be expected that, in deference to a complaint that the multiplication of Medical Schools has a tendency to impair the dignity of Medical Science, we will favor the profession with the reasons which have impelled us forward in this enterprise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Century of Medicine and Chemistry: A Lecture, Introductory to the Course of Lectures to the Medical Class in Yale College, Delivered September 14, 1871 His discovery of the peculiar physiological eflects of nitrous oxide when inhaled was verified by trial upon a great number of persons contributing, (beyond any real importance it had) more than all his former researches, to his celebrity, and was the starting point of his great subsequent success. Medically considered, the chief interest of this research is the remarkable fact that neither Davey nor any of his medical associates or their successors discovered the anesthetic power of nitrous oxide. It was exhibited in probably thousands of cases. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
