Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introductions to Notable Poems Verse which appeals with equal force to those whose prime interest is in perfection of form and to those to whom poetry is the inevitable lan guage Of the human spirit in its mo ments Of exaltation. N O attempt has been made to give the selection a representative character other than that secured by bringing together the different verse forms; and even in this respect the choice has only fol lowed the line of the most beautiful and memorable poetry. In the In troductions the endeavor has been made to set the poems in their en vironment, so to speak, by sketching briefly the development Of the poem and of the poet; by bringing together the facts which throw light on the making of the poem; and by point ing out the characteristic qualities. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Poet's Walk: An Introduction to English Poetry I came the other day upon a volume of poetry, the gift, as the inscription ran, of an Eton tutor to a pupil 'who was fond of poetry, and was expected to gain some wisdom from this, the best kind of reading.' There are not many things one would sooner hear a boy, in whom one was interested, praised for than a love of poetry; though one would wish also, of course, that he should find from his reading so much at least of wisdom as, with honest Dogberry, to 'give God thanks and make no boast of it.' But as I wondered, for I had known something of the boy, whether the promise thus foreshadowed had been or was ever to be realised, I began to ask myself why it was that this fondness for poetry should be so rare a quality in boyhood as to deserve this particular record. Let me here be permitted to waive the possibility, - the probability, if my reader pleases - that in this quality the tutor found the only occasion for the meed of praise which his good nature prompted him to bestow on a departing pupil. Book An Introduction to Poetry

Download or read book An Introduction to Poetry written by Raymond Macdonald Alden and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-09 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Poetry: For Students of English Literature Chapter Four, on the fundamental problems of English rhythm, deals with the point of greatest difficulty in the whole range of the subject, and is to be regarded, not as making claim to originality, but as the most individual portion of this book. SO recently as the time of publication of the earlier volume, English Verse, it seemed impracticable to dogmatize on the elements of our metres, with any hope of doing more than adding another note to the discordant jangle of voices on that dangerous sub ject. But there is evidence that conditions have be! Come more hopeful; recent writers have seemed to tend more and more toward agreement on certain substantial principles and while one must still wait, no doubt, for a generally accredited science of English prosody, it is perhaps safeito offer for the use of students a rather more pretentious body of doctrine than would have been reasonable hereto. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The World's Best Poetry of Home, of Friendship, Vol. 1: Introduction the Purpose of Poetry; Introductory Essay Young People and the Poets, Volumes 1 and 2; Love, Introductory Essay the Future of Poetry We must note two things about this step for ward 'which man has taken toward civilization in the first' place he had to have some leisure to do 'these things, 'and in the second place the objects he has made reveal his ingenuity and forethought. They are records of his life. And it 'will happen that, as his leisure increases, his implements will become more and more elaborate and ornate. 'every workman will have his own way of fashion ing them, using his Own 'device and designs, so that they will become something more than rude relics of one historic age or another: they will tell us something of'the artificer himself; they will em body 1s0me intentional expression of human life, 1and come to liave an art value. In so far as they can do this, they contain the essential quality of the fine arts. And the more freely the workman can deal with his craft, the more perfectly he can make it characteristic of himself, the greater will its artistic quality become. Book Six Famous Living Poets

Download or read book Six Famous Living Poets written by Coulson Kernahan and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Six Famous Living Poets: Introductory Studies, Illustrated By, Quotation and Comment Dear Miss Klickmann, You bade me pen these appreciations, and you read each as written. When you thought I had done well, you said so more than generously, thereby heartening me, in later chapters, to do my best. When you thought I had done less well, or ill, you said so as frankly, thereby inducing me to strike out what was worst. As to you I owe not only the book's inception, but much invaluable criticism, will you accept the Dedication? If any chapter, or section of a chapter gave you, in the reading, half as much pleasure as I found in "The Flower-Patch among the Hills," "Between the Larch Woods and the Weir," and "The Trail of the Ragged Robin," I am content. As you can confirm what I say, may I add - though for other eyes than yours - that "criticism," in any scholarly or academic sense, these articles never set out to be. They are no more than Introductory Studies for the general reader, and penned, admittedly, from a personal standpoint. Rambling, discursive and gossipy as they are, my hope is that they are not altogether without freshness of outlook and illustration; for though I confess to taking pleasure only in appreciation, and none in depreciation, I have not for that reason refrained from indicating what seems to me - wrongly perhaps, but at least sincerely and outspokenly - an occasional defect or weakness in the poems under consideration. But the intention of the book is to set the work of each poet in so attractive a light as to send my readers to study for themselves all that he has written. Were it not so, I should not have ventured to ask permission to quote so widely. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Cambridge Introduction to Eighteenth Century Poetry

Download or read book The Cambridge Introduction to Eighteenth Century Poetry written by John Sitter and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For readers daunted by the formal structures and rhetorical sophistication of eighteenth-century English poetry, this introduction by John Sitter brings the techniques and the major poets of the period 1700–1785 triumphantly to life. Sitter begins by offering a guide to poetic forms ranging from heroic couplets to blank verse, then demonstrates how skilfully male and female poets of the period used them as vehicles for imaginative experience, feelings and ideas. He then provides detailed analyses of individual works by poets from Finch, Swift and Pope, to Gray, Cowper and Barbauld. An approachable introduction to English poetry and major poets of the eighteenth century, this book provides a grounding in poetic analysis useful to students and general readers of literature.

Book Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry Classic Reprint written by H. C. Beeching and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Two Lectures Introductory to the Study of Poetry We may presume that by his first epithet Milton intended that simplicity which is another name for sincerity. 'He meant that a poet must look at the world frankly and with open eyes; with the spirit, though with more than the wisdom, of a child.) We sometimes express another side of the same truth by saying that poetry is "universal," meaning that it cares nothing for superficial and transient fashions, but is interested only "in man, in nature, and in human life," in their permanent elements. This first epithet seems to fix beyond dispute an indispensable quality of all poetry. If a writer is insincere, or if he is conventional and fashionable, we are sure, whatever his airs and graces, that he is no poet. By "sensuous" it is probable that Milton meant what, in more technical language, we should describe as "concrete." Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Remains of the Early Popular Poetry of England: Collected and Edited, With Introductions and Notes Altogether, Edinburgh may be considered to have been more fortunate than London in its editors and editions of ancient poetry: for, with the exception of a collection of the ballads and romances relating to Sir Gawayne, prepared for the Bannatyne Club by Sir F. Madden, in 1839, and a certain number of isolated piecesl ushered into publicity under various auspices and at various times, no successful attempt has been hitherto made to bring within the reach of students and antiquaries such remains as are still preserved of the early popular poetry of this country, which will be readily allowed to be of high interest, value and curiosity on many accounts. To any future historian not too shy of venturing into by - paths in search of his materials, this collection will certainly afford no scanty store of illustration for a chapter on the manners of our ancestors, their dress.
