Book Spirituality in the Biomedical World

Download or read book Spirituality in the Biomedical World written by Guy Jobin and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-06-22 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The need to take the spiritual experience during illness into account is part of a broader trend in Western societies—a fascination with the practical uses of spirituality and its contribution to individual wellbeing, whether through a religious or a humanist tradition. This understanding of spirituality differs from traditional views embedded in religious traditions. This book takes a critical point of view at the biomedical representation of the function of spirituality in care. Medicine reorders notions such as life, death, health, sickness, and spirituality. This process is called here “sapientialization”, i.e. the spiritual experience is expressed and understood under the auspices of and in terms of wisdom. This view tends to identify spirituality and ethics. I propose an alternate understanding of spirituality, grounded on its subversive power. Inspired by the work of the theologian John D. Caputo, it is critical of some problems that are associated with the sapientialization of spirituality in biomedicine, such as the medicalization of spiritual experiences or the instrumentalization of spirituality. It provides an understanding of spirituality that honours both the medical interest in it and its capacity to resist to instrumentalization.

Book Nursing Theorists and Their Work

Download or read book Nursing Theorists and Their Work written by Ann Marriner-Tomey and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 418 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This modern classic presents authoritative, up-to-date descriptions and analyses of 28 nursing theories in a clear, succinct format. With the addition of two new international theorists, it now provides a comprehensive presentation of 33 nursing theorists and their work. Extensive, updated bibliographies at the end of each chapter, split into primary and secondary sources, direct the reader to excellent resources for further study. Each chapter guides the reader through an expert overview of a specific theory-some reviewed and validated by the theorists themselves-in a logical chapter organization that makes information easy to follow. Its comprehensive and thorough approach, objective critiques, clear writing style, and consistent organization combine to make this new edition of Nursing Theorists and Their Work ideal for theory instruction at both the BSN level and the graduate level..

Book Ethics of Hospitality

  • Author : Daniel Innerarity
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2017-01-12
  • ISBN : 1317210360
  • Pages : 296 pages

Download or read book Ethics of Hospitality written by Daniel Innerarity and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-01-12 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The source of hospitality lies in the fundamental ethical experiences that make up the fabric of the social lives of people. Therein lies a primary form of humanity. Whether we are guests or hosts, this reveals our situation in a world made up of receiving and meeting, leaving room for the liberty to give and receive beyond the imperatives of reciprocity. This book proposes an ethic that promotes the possibility of stirring emotion before that of protecting ourselves from unexpected encounters. Fundamental ethical competence consists of opening up to the wholly other and to others, to be accessible to the world’s solicitations. There is moral superiority of vulnerable love over control and moderation, of generous passion over rational prudence and of excess over exchange. Constructing an ethic of hospitality is essential at a time when we are torn between the imperatives of modernization and growth and the demands of concern and protection. The experience we all have today, that of the fragility of the world, is giving rise to a powerful tendency toward solicitude. From such a perspective, the duty of individuals no longer consists of protecting themselves from society, but of defending it, taking care of a social fabric outside of which no identity can be formed.

Book Medical Informatics Europe 81

Download or read book Medical Informatics Europe 81 written by F. Gremy and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-08 with total page 999 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Federation for Medical Informatics has established itself as a regional body coordinating activity in medical informatics. The Congress in Toulouse, MIE-81, from 9 - 13 March 1981, is the third congress in the ser ies following MIE-78 in Cambr idge, and MIB-79 in Berlin with a gap during 1980 for the world congress MEDINFO-80 in Tokyo. The rationale behind all these congresses is the scientific need to share results and ideas and the educational need to train a wide variety of professional staff in the potential of health care and medical informatics. All the caring professions are involved, doctors, scientists, nurses, para-medical staff, administrators, health care planners, community physicians, epidemiologists, statisticians, operations analysts together with specialists from the computing profession dealing with system analysis, hardware, software, languages, data-bases and the marketing of systems. Medical Informatics is a very wide subject with ramifications throughout the health care and preventive services; it offers a key to the monitoring and improvement of patient care and to the provision of a healthier environment. The collection and evaluation of relevant data improves our understanding of the ways in which health care is provided while the availability of cheaper computer hardware and more versatile software enables us to design and implement more revealing and intelligent medical systems. Even though typical systems take a substantial amount of time to design, implement and evaluate, there is the continuing need for informaticians to assess the current state of developmen.
