Book An Introduction to the Study of Landscape Design

Download or read book An Introduction to the Study of Landscape Design written by Henry Vincent Hubbard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-26 with total page 583 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Landscape Design We mean this book to present a general conception of landscape design which may enable a designer better to determine for himself the relations of the objects and ideas with which he is dealing, and better to prepare and use in a decisive way, in the individual problems of his profession, the natural aptitudes and acquired knowledge which are the tools of his trade. The book may also serve as a general introduction to the subject for those whose interest in it is purely that of appreciation and enjoyment of landscape designs and of natural landscapes. The rapid growth of landscape architecture as an independent profession has been very recent. Nearly all the trained men in the field are giving their energies to active practice rather than to theorizing or to writing. It is natural, therefore, that the bulk of the detailed printed information on construction and planting which the landscape architect uses should have originated in the older fields of architecture and engineering and horticulture, that the discussions of general esthetics should have little specific reference to the problems of the landscape architect, and that, while there have been many books on special problems and special aspects of the field, there should have appeared up to this time no book, treating generally of landscape design, adequate to the modern development of the subject and of the profession. This book is not a compendium of useful information as to the practicalities of landscape construction, though such a book is much needed; nor is it primarily a book of pictures of completed work to which the designer may go to see how problems similar to his own have been met before. It is emphatically not a book of rules which are supposed automatically to produce good design if religiously followed; there are no such rules, and no esthetic theory is final About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Introducing a revolutionary new approach to detail design in landscape architecture In this groundbreaking book, Niall Kirkwood of the Harvard Graduate School of Design takes a fresh, holistic approach to the theories, approaches, and practices of landscape detail. With the support of a wealth of graphic and written material taken from historic and contemporary landscape designwork, he clearly demonstrates the role that landscape detail plays in the design process. Book excerpt: "In this book Jill Pearlman argues that Gropius did not effect changes alone and, further, that the Harvard Graduate School of Design was not merely an offshoot of the Bauhaus. - She offers a crucial missing piece to the story - and to the history of modern architecture - by focusing on Joseph Hudnut, the school's dean and founder."--BOOK JACKET.

Book Landscape Theory in Design

Download or read book Landscape Theory in Design written by Susan Herrington and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Phenomenology, Materiality, Cybernetics, Palimpsest, Cyborgs, Landscape Urbanism, Typology, Semiotics, Deconstruction - the minefield of theoretical ideas that students must navigate today can be utterly confusing, and how do these theories translate to the design studio? Landscape Theory in Design introduces theoretical ideas to students without the use of jargon or an assumption of extensive knowledge in other fields, and in doing so, links these ideas to the processes of design. In five thematic chapters Susan Herrington explains: the theoretic groundings of the theory of philosophy, why it matters to design, an example of the theory in a work of landscape architecture from the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, debates surrounding the theory (particularly as they elaborate modern and postmodern thought) and primary readings that can be read as companions to her text. An extensive glossary of theoretical terms also adds a vital contribution to students’ comprehension of theories relevant to the design of landscapes and gardens. Covering the design of over 40 landscape architects, architects, and designers in 111 distinct projects from 20 different countries, Landscape Theory in Design is essential reading for any student of the landscape.

  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book Hilton Village written by John V. Quarstein and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2018 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Newport News, Virginia. Established in 1918, Hilton Village was the first public housing project built in the United States. Spurred on by Newport News Shipbuilding president Homer Ferguson, it was created to house shipyard workers during World War I. The village was the city's first planned community and its first National Register of Historic Places district. Hilton's distinctive cottage-style architecture, reminiscent of an English village, is one of the first examples of the New Urbanism and Garden City movements in America. Along the tree-lined streets are homes and shops that might have been pulled from a Dickens novel. The vision of the leaders who crafted Hilton Village--the shipyard's Ferguson, Harvard University town planner Henry Hubbard, and world-renowned architect Francis Joannes--remains apparent." -- Page [4] of cover.
