This book was released on 2017-12-18 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Igneous Rocks The plan Of the present work is that of selecting from the large body of Observed facts bearing on the identification of rocks with the microscope those which it is desirable for the beginner to get command of in the course of his early studies. The work is intended as an introduction to the exhaustive treatises on the subject. Inasmuch as the student invariably begins his laboratory work with the igneous rocks, these alone, with their constituent minerals, have been considered. Such a method of attack at once greatly limits the field on its mineralogical side, and permits of an extended treatment of determinative methods. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to the Study of Petrology: The Igneous Rocks A Little book that should briefly describe the mineral constituents and internal structures of the Igneous Rocks, their mode of occurrence at the surface and their origin beneath the crust of the earth, has long been a desideratum among English text-books of Science. With the view of filling this gap this little book has been prepared; and it is hoped that it will be found useful, not only as an introduction to the subject, but also as a handy work of reference. In emphasizing this aspect, I have been influenced by a conviction that the subject has not yet been accorded its due place as an integral part of historical geology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Igneous Rocks, Vol. 1 of 2: Composition, d104ure and Classification, Description and Occurrence In the construction of Volume I, liberal use has been made of many sources of information, to which references are given in most cases. But the subject is so complex that the present treat ment of it must be necessarily incomplete. However, it is hoped that the essential features of the petrology of igneous rocks have been presented in such a manner as to inform the student of the fundamental facts of the subject, and to call his attention to the lines along which further advancement of the science may be made. Download or read book A Text Book of Geology written by W. Jerome Harrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Text-Book of Geology: Intended as an Introduction to the Study of the Rocks and Their Contents This is nominally the fourth edition of a work which first appeared in 1889. But so many additions and alterations have been made that it is practically a new book. The changes were so extensive as to necessitate the resetting in new type of the entire work; and the publishers have taken advantage of this to introduce both larger and clearer type and a larger page. Many new illustrations have also been added, several of these being from photographs taken by myself especially for this book. In Geology, as in all the other sciences, constant and rapid progress is being made. The changes in, and additions to our knowledge of the rocks have been especially great in the strata which form the beginning and the end of the geological series respectively - O-the pre-cambrian and Cambrian Formations at the beginning, and the Glacial Series near the end. Special care has been devoted to bringing these portions of the book up to date. It has been remarked that geology cannot be learnt from boo but it is equally true that geology cannot be learnt without books. Certainly the rocks themselves are the best teachers, but it has taken thousands of years to acquire the power of interpreting the signs of those rocks, and the student must make himself master of the principal facts that the numerous workers in this field of knowledge have already collected. 1 would urge the student to go direct to nature. Book Petrography and Geology of the Igneous Rocks of the Highwood Mountains Montana Classic Reprint

Download or read book Petrography and Geology of the Igneous Rocks of the Highwood Mountains Montana Classic Reprint written by Louis Valentine Pirsson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Petrography and Geology of the Igneous Rocks of the Highwood Mountains, Montana In the following work will be found the results of field and labora tory studies of the igneous rocks of the Highwood Mountains of Mon tana. The field work was carried out by Mr. Walter H. Weed and the writer, chiefly during the latter part of the summer of 1894, though the eastern part of the area was again revisited for a few days in 1896. The north-central part of the area, around the Shonkin and Arnoux stocks, was not visited by the writer, as this part of the work was done by Mr. Weed after the writer was called from the field. As the field work in petrology was incidental to the areal mapping of the region on the base map of 4 miles to the inch for the Fort Benton folio of the United States Geological Survey, under charge of Mr. Weed, the time that could be devoted to a careful study of details was necessarily limited. Future studies of the district may therefore bring out minor features which were not seen or which are but briefly treated.
