Download or read book Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Arthur Stone Dewing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-05 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the History of Modern Philosophy There are at the present time accessible to the English reader many excellent and comprehensive histories of philoso phy. And the only reason for treating the subject again has arisen from the h0pe that a more simple treatment would prove useful to those readers unfamiliar with the technicalities of recent philosophical systems. For various reasons the bistori cal side serves as perhaps the only broad and permanently valuable approach to the whole field of philosophy, while it is a firm conviction with many that some slight acquaintance with the development of philosophical problems is indispensable to their appreciation. This work is intended as an introduction to the subject, and is not the expression of a critical or recon structive attitude; it makes no attempt to trace the logico genetic development of modern thought, nor does it pretend to consider every aspect of historical development. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Philosophy From the Earliest Period to the Time of Socrates, Vol. 1: With a General Introduction That this part, containing the General Introduction to the entire subject and the his tory of the earliest philosophers, should appear after others dealing with the later periods, is in some mea sure to be regretted, because Greek Philosophy is best treated as a whole, and gains immensely by being studied in the order of development; yet those who are acquainted with the previously translated portions of Dr. Zeller's work will be the more ready to welcome the introductory volume, without which, indeed, many things in the later philosophy, and in Dr. Zeller's treat ment of it, would have remained comparatively obscure. Book A Brief Introduction to Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief Introduction to Modern Philosophy Classic Reprint written by Arthur Kenyon Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-04-30 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Introduction to Modern Philosophy Uttermost. Nevertheless, philosophy has evolved for itself a technicality in stand point and phraseology which certainly ad mits of simplification, and many of the more or less artificial difficulties confront ing the beginner, which grow out of this, may be removed without any real loss. Perhaps an excuse should be made for the positive character of the conclusions which are here set forth. I certainly do not wish to appear dogmatic, or to claim for my Opinions any greater value than they possess. But it has seemed to me that the danger of leaving too strong an impression of the authoritative nature of the particular conclusions advanced is more than counterbalanced by the Opposite dan ger, in case one tries to be too objective in his tone, of leaving no unified impression at all. An introductory treatment of philo sophical problems which does not lead up to positive and constructive results is apt, I think, to be unsatisfactory, especially to the reader who has no previous acquaint ance with the subject, and whose interest has to a considerable extent still to be. Book Ancient Philosophy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Christopher Shields
  • Publisher : Taylor & Francis
  • Release : 2022-12-30
  • ISBN : 1000817245
  • Pages : 304 pages

Download or read book Ancient Philosophy written by Christopher Shields and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-12-30 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ancient Philosophy (2012), Christopher Shields expanded on the coverage of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle in his earlier book, Classical Philosophy (2003), to include the philosophy of the Hellenistic era. In this new edition (2023), Shields reaches even further to include material on Neoplatonism and on Augustine and Proclus, capturing—from Thales of Miletus to the end of the sixth century CE—all of what might be called ancient philosophy. It traces the important connections between the periods and individuals of more than 1,200 years of philosophy’s history without losing sight of the novelties and dynamics unique to each. The coverage of the Presocratics, Sophists, Plato, and Stoicism has also been expanded so as to highlight Plato’s responses to the Sophistic movement in the development of his Theory of Forms. And, finally, a valuable companion volume, with Shields’s focused translations of the important sources referred to in Ancient Philosophy, Second Edition, will soon be published, obviating the need for a massive anthology of discordant voices. Ancient Philosophy, Second Edition, retains its helpful structure: each philosophical position receives: (1) a brief introduction, (2) a sympathetic review of its principal motivations and primary supporting arguments, and (3) a short assessment, inviting readers to evaluate its plausibility. The result is a book that brings the ancient arguments to life, making the introduction truly contemporary. It continues to serve as both a first stop and a well-visited resource for any student of the subject. Key updates in the second edition Extends the range of coverage well into the sixth century CE by offering a new chapter on Neoplatonism and early Christian philosophy, featuring discussions of Proclus and Augustine. Explains the conflicts between Plato and the Sophists by highlighting their approaches to rhetoric as an instrument of persuasion, offering a helpful explanation of two senses of argument. Includes new coverage of Plato’s argument from the Simplicity of the Soul, Argument from Affinity, and Argument against Rhetoric. Includes coverage of Aristotle’s political naturalism . May be used with a soon-to-be-published companion volume of primary source material, all of it translated by Christopher Shields specifically for the reader of this Second Edition.

From that irresistible beginning, Sophie becomes obsessed with questions that take her far beyond what she knows of her Norwegian village. Through those letters, she enrolls in a kind of correspondence course, covering Socrates to Sartre, with a mysterious philosopher, while receiving letters addressed to another girl. Who is Hilde? And why does her mail keep turning up? To unravel this riddle, Sophie must use the philosophy she is learning—but the truth turns out to be far more complicated than she could have imagined.
