Book Drafting the EU Charter

Download or read book Drafting the EU Charter written by J. Schönlau and published by Springer. This book was released on 2005-10-10 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives a comprehensive account of the drafting of the EU Charter in the first Convention and shows the important contribution of this process to the constitutional development of the European Union. By drawing on a body of empirical data from the Convention in 1999-2000 it shows how the debates about a catalogue of fundamental rights for the EU prior to enlargement triggered a much wider discussion about the basis and basics of European integration. Thus it can shed new light on the EU's ongoing search for legitimacy.

Book Tommy Koh Serving Singapore And The World

Download or read book Tommy Koh Serving Singapore And The World written by Yeo Lay Hwee and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims to celebrate the many contributions of Professor Tommy Koh as a Singaporean diplomat, public intellectual and social changemaker. It is an account of the ideas and ideals of an extraordinary Singaporean public servant who was not only born with the talent and ability to traverse many areas of society, but one who, when given the opportunity, had the drive and ambition to make the most of it to create a better world for Singaporeans and the global community. Experts in the various fields of endeavour and people who have worked with him examine his significant contributions in essays that are organised in four main sections: Diplomacy and International Relations; Arts, Culture and Heritage; Progressive Society; International Law; and a fifth section that features tributes contributed by his colleagues and former classmates. Set in the context of Singapore — a nation known for its socio-economic progress, its ability to punch above its own weight in international relations, as well as its increasing appreciation for heritage, the arts, and sustainable development — this book illustrates the power of the individual and sense of agency that can create the systems and structures to achieve all those things. The story of Professor Tommy Koh as captured in this book should energise other change agents to go out and create the progressive, inclusive and sustainable world they want. Book European Governance After Nice

Download or read book European Governance After Nice written by Hiroyi Akiba and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-03-13 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What is the impact of institutional reform implemented by the Nice Treaty on European Governance? What should be done to enhance democratic legitimacy in the EU? This book provides an up-to-date guide to understanding the European Union as an institution. Globalisation has led to enormous changes in the international environment which, in turn, have demanded institutional reform of the European Union in the form of the Nice Treaty. European Governance After Nice scrutinises how, and to what extent, the treaty will contribute to the solution of existing problems, examining both its positive effects and its limitations and examines the reforms within the EU through political science, law and economics, in order to express the full extent of the different effects of the Nice Treaty on non-member as well as member countries. The contributors suggest that the threat of varying exchange rates in the future, when the Treaty has an expansionary effect on economic scale, will lead to a deepening interdependence between the excluded countries.

Book The ASEAN Charter

    Book Details:
  • Author : Walter Woon
  • Publisher : NUS Press
  • Release : 2015-09-22
  • ISBN : 9971698676
  • Pages : 308 pages

Download or read book The ASEAN Charter written by Walter Woon and published by NUS Press. This book was released on 2015-09-22 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forty years after the Bangkok Declaration, which established the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), a new document was drafted as a result of “bold and visionary recommendations” of an ASEAN Committee of Eminent Persons. The ASEAN Charter, which came into force in 2008, provides ASEAN’s legal status and institutional framework. In effect, it is a legally binding agreement among the 10 ASEAN Member States. In many respects, however, the Charter is more important as an aspirational document. Written by one of the persons involved in the negotiations leading to the adoption of the Charter, this meticulously researched publication helps readers navigate the ambiguities of the Charter by detailing an insider’s background, provision by provision, of the debates that went into the making of the ASEAN Charter. It not only explains how the provisions of the Charter came to be drafted, but also how they relate to the realities of diplomatic practice. This volume will be an indispensable reference for scholars, working diplomats, and businesses and institutions that have a stake in ASEAN. "The ASEAN Charter is a commitment for us to become a rules-based community. It is time for us, especially the weaker countries among us, to be ruled by law rather than by political whim, national interest or military power. Walter Woon's work will be a major contribution to that end." - Rodolfo C. Severino, former Secretary-General of ASEAN (1998-2002) "Prof Walter Woon and I represented Singapore in the High-Level Task Force which drafted the ASEAN Charter; he is the ideal author for such a commentary on the Charter. This should be read by everyone interested in ASEAN." - Tommy Koh, Ambassador-at-Large, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore

The Earth Charter was adopted in the year 2000 with the mission of addressing the economic, social, political, spiritual, and environmental problems confronting the world in the twenty-first century. Part 1 of the book, "Imagination into Principle," comprises Steven C. Rockefeller's behind-the-scenes summary of how the language for the Earth Charter was drafted. In part 2, "Principle into Imagination," ten writers breathe life into its concepts with their own original work. Contributors include Rick Bass, Alison Hawthorne Deming, John Lane, Robert Michael Pyle, Janisse Ray, Scott Russell Sanders, Lauret Savoy, and Mary Evelyn Tucker. In part 3, "Imagination and Principle into a New Ethic," Leonardo Boff offers a new paradigm created through reflecting on the concept of care in the Earth Charter.

Book Global Canons in an Age of Contestation

Download or read book Global Canons in an Age of Contestation written by and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2024-06-26 with total page 641 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comparative constitutionalism emerged in its current form against the backdrop of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War. As that backdrop recedes into the past, it is being replaced by a more multi-polar and confusing world, and the current state of the discipline of comparative constitutionalism reflects this fragmentation and uncertainty. This has opened up space for new, more varied, and increasingly critical voices seeking to improve the project of democratic constitutionalism. But it also raises questions: What of the past, if anything, is worth preserving? Which more recent parts should be defining of the field? In this context, this book asks which are - or should be - the canonical texts of comparative constitutionalism. The theoretical scope of the contributions is broad and ambitious, selecting primary material from beyond the existing textbooks to engage the concept of a canon. This framework provides significant insights about inclusion and exclusion, and proposes candidates for canonical and anti-canonical materials. The result is a wide-ranging discussion, among many voices, of how particular judgments and other primary texts have shaped or should shape our understanding of central elements of democratic constitutionalism from a comparative law perspective. This book is not a prescription of one universal understanding, but a broader conversation about the field and the future of constitutional democracy.
