Book The Elements of Modern Politics

Download or read book The Elements of Modern Politics written by Francis Graham Wilson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 732 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Modern Politics: An Introduction to Political Science This book attempts the consideration of some of the major problems of political theory. Admittedly, it is a series of discussions in political fundamentals, and most of the problems presented are, in general, those of principle rather than those of factual organization. Most of the elementary books in political science have leaned too far, either toward the presentation of facts or toward emphasis on specific problems. It may be in the end simply a matter of the temperament of the college teacher of politics; and while few of us wish to engage in byzantine discussions, it is suggested that teaching to stimulate thought on political problems is successful neither with the pure problem method nor with the presentation of organized factual information. The underlying political values must be brought to the attention of the student if he is to become conscious of them. The intelligent appreciation of the facts can be greatly advanced by an introductory course in principles. Book Principles of Political Science Classic Reprint

Download or read book Principles of Political Science Classic Reprint written by Robert Niven Gilchrist and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11 with total page 866 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Principles of Political Science As this book is meant to be a text-book for the earlier stages of political and economic studies I have not elaborate-d what may be called abnormal theories. A fair impersonal presentation of modern political theory has been my endeavour. Originally I meant to include several chapters on the history of political theory, but the book ran the danger of being overcrowded, so wherever possible I have incorporated historical sections in the individual subjects. The treatment of some subjects, e? The Government of Britain, and the Government of India, has been much more detailed than a first course of' political studies usually demands. Such detailed treatment is due to the nature of the course prescribed in India. Repetition of detail, e.g., under the Executive (chapter XVI), and under the individual governments (chapters XXI - XXVII) is also due to local exigencies. The chapter on the Government of Uapan, though not essential according to our local syllabus, is added to enable Indian students to know in outline the system of government in an eastern empire which for many years has created the deepest interest in India. The bibliography appended is intended as an initial guide. To Indian colleges wishing to start Political and Economic studies. The list has been compiled with reference to the sums usually available for such purposes. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Introduction to Political Science Two Series of Lectures

Download or read book Introduction to Political Science Two Series of Lectures written by J. R. Seeley and published by Cosimo, Inc.. This book was released on 2005-12-01 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a certain time the society thus founded on kindred or common religion or both, becomes aware that its union is a thing valuable for its own sake, that government and organisation and co-operative life are useful in themselves to the individuals who possess them. Hence there springs up the conception of a common good, a common weal, which is independent of such considerations as kindred or religion; by degrees the society disengages itself from these props...-from Introduction to Political ScienceOne of the most important and respected historians of his day was also a beloved professor at Cambridge University, where his classes and lectures were famous for their clarity and enlightenment. It's easy to see why students clamored to be taught by Seeley: in this collection of lectures, delivered in the late 1880s and early 1890s and published posthumously in book form in 1896, he shares his thoughts on methods of studying the past in with such clear-eyed lucidity, in such warm and jargon-free language that complicated concepts are rendered perfectly plain. Also available from Cosimo Classics: Seeley's lectures on The Expansion of England.British classical scholar SIR JOHN ROBERT SEELEY (1834-1895) was Regius Professor of Modern History at Cambridge, a fellow of the Royal Historical Society, and an honorary member of Historical Society of Massachusetts. He is also the author of Ecce Homo.

Book Readings in Political Science Selected and Edited Classic Reprint

Download or read book Readings in Political Science Selected and Edited Classic Reprint written by Raymond Garfield Gettell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Readings in Political Science Selected and Edited All teachers realize the necessity of having their students read more than is contained in the textbook, and valuable selections of material to direct such reading have recently appeared for the students of history, economics, sociology, and American government. As yet, however, no book of readings for the general subject of political science has been attempted, and the editor claims the indulgence due to one who ventures into an untried field. In a number of cases contemporary accounts or official documents have been quoted, but no effort has been made to secure material from obscure or out-of-the-way sources. On the contrary, extracts have been taken, whenever possible, from recognized modern authorities - from books the majority of which will be found in every well-appointed college library. In this way it is hoped that students will be led to read further, using this volume as a framework around which their reading may be organized. Besides, the selections in this book may serve as a basis for classroom discussion, the case system of instruction being particularly applicable to political science. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Political Science Historical political science, or the history of political institutions, is one branch of the main subject.1 The connection between these allied branches of knowledge has been well indicated by Professor Seeley, who tells us that political science is the fruit of history, and history is the root of political science.2 A recent American writer 3 has illustrated the relationship in a still more striking manner by saying that history offers the third dimension of political science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Study of Politics: The Present State of American Political Science This essay is addressed to graduate students. My aim is to tell young men and young women some things it may be good to know about the profession they intend to enter. If old timers think they learn something also, they are welcome to whatever they pick up. If many older members of the profession read this, some of them will find confirmation of their own positions. They may even encounter some of their own ideas stated in their own words. For I have freely utilized what I have heard said over a period of at least three decades. I hope, of course, that I have myself added something to the discussion-if I have, it is not likely to sound new to men of my own age. I have not won any prizes for keeping my thoughts to myself over the years. But the young people, I have hope, will encounter a thing or two here they have not already pondered.
