Book Representation of Female Characters in Star Wars

Download or read book Representation of Female Characters in Star Wars written by Sven Frueh and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2019-09-12 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2018 in the subject Communications - Movies and Television, grade: 2, University of Linz (Department of English), course: Drama and Film, language: English, abstract: The American science fiction franchise Star Wars was created by George Lucas and presented to the world in 1977 with the release of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Un-expectedly, the movie became the highest-grossing film of all time until 1982. Five out of the seven consecutive Star Wars movies, excluding all other standalone Star Wars films, are found on the top 100 list of highest grossing films of all time in Canada and the USA. Despite the popularity of the franchise, it is increasingly criticized for its portrayal of women in a stereotypical fashion; critics claim that the story evolves predominantly around male heroes while objectifying women and giving them only a passive role in the plot. To evaluate these claims, this paper will introduce and compare the most important female characters and their roles throughout the saga. The Star Wars movies are divided into three separate trilogies, each of them having a main female character. The paper will examine if the portrayal of each of those women in their respective trilogy depends on sexist stereotypes or if they are represented negatively in terms of power, sexualization, and characterization. The three female heroines will be discussed in the chronological order of the canonical Star Wars timeline, starting with Star Wars I: The Phantom Menace, and ending with Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi. Due to the limitations of this paper, the representation of the numerous other female characters throughout the movies will not be analyzed.

  • Pages : 305 pages

Download or read book Americanization of History written by Kathleen McDonald and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of essays searches for how history and literature translate into filmic texts that then reflect the time and place of the translation. Major motion pictures as well as television movies and series are the sites of this exploration. The opening essay surveys what films tell us it means to be set in a medieval time, while the second looks at one of the most powerful movie studios since the earliest days of movie-making, Walt Disney Studios. The second section investigates classic Americana by delving specifically into the hegemonic power of Walt Disney Studios, by considering the union between the American pastime of baseball and the great white way of Broadway, and by discovering the constantly morphing relationship of the icons of the Wild West. Section three looks at characters living outside of roles considered socially appropriate in their world: vampire slayers, mobsters, and those with multiple personalities. The fourth section studies how present-day mores of power and beauty control revisions of historically-based stories through issues of vengeance, race, sexuality, and the notion of beauty itself. The final section takes up the question of what it means to historicize the present moment, and analyzes the current period via a very popular and long-running show’s depiction of sexuality as accepted or rejected within a paradigm that appears not merely to tolerate, but actively to promote, deviance. The last essay questions the very concepts of time and history themselves. The articles do not reach one conclusion regarding this topic, but instead provide a variety of perspectives which help to theorize the issue for the discerning reader.

Book Epics Spectacles and Blockbusters

Download or read book Epics Spectacles and Blockbusters written by Sheldon Hall and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considers the history of the American blockbuster—the large-scale, high-cost film—as it evolved from the 1890s to today. The pantheon of big-budget, commercially successful films encompasses a range of genres, including biblical films, war films, romances, comic-book adaptations, animated features, and historical epics. In Epics, Spectacles, and Blockbusters: A Hollywood History authors Sheldon Hall and Steve Neale discuss the characteristics, history, and modes of distribution and exhibition that unite big-budget pictures, from their beginnings in the late nineteenth century to the present. Moving chronologically, the authors examine the roots of today's blockbuster in the "feature," "special," "superspecial," "roadshow," "epic," and "spectacle" of earlier eras, with special attention to the characteristics of each type of picture. In the first section, Hall and Neale consider the beginnings of features, specials, and superspecials in American cinema, as the terms came to define not the length of a film but its marketable stars or larger budget. The second section investigates roadshowing as a means of distributing specials and the changes to the roadshow that resulted from the introduction of synchronized sound in the 1920s. In the third section, the authors examine the phenomenon of epics and spectacles that arose from films like Gone with the Wind, Samson and Deliliah, and Spartacus and continues to evolve today in films like Spider-Man and Pearl Harbor. In this section, Hall and Neale consider advances in visual and sound technology and the effects and costs they introduced to the industry. Scholars of film and television studies as well as readers interested in the history of American moviemaking will enjoy Epics, Spectacles, and Blockbusters.

Book Culture Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films

Download or read book Culture Identities and Technology in the Star Wars Films written by Carl Silvio and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-11-26 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Released in May 1977, the original Star Wars movie inaugurated the age of the movie blockbuster. It also redefined the use of cinematic special effects, creating a new textual universe that now stretches through three decades, two trilogies and generations of fascinated viewers. The body of critical analysis that has developed from this epic focuses primarily on the Star Wars universe as a contemporary myth. However, like any fiction, it must also be viewed--and consequently analyzed--as a product of the culture which created it. The essays in this book analyze the Star Wars trilogies as a culturally and historically specific phenomenon. Moving away from the traditional myth-based criticism of the films, the essayists employ a cultural studies model to examine how this phenomenon intersects with social formations such as economics, technology, race and gender. Critical approaches are varied and include political and economic analysis informed by feminism, contemporary race theory, Marxism, new media studies and post-humanism. Among the topics covered are the connections between the trilogies and our own cultural landscape; the problematic issues of race and gender; and the thematic implications of Lucas' presentation of technology.
