Book excerpt: This is a discount Black and white version. Some images may be unclear, please see BCCampus website for the digital version. This book was born out of a 2014 meeting of earth science educators representing most of the universities and colleges in British Columbia, and nurtured by a widely shared frustration that many students are not thriving in courses because textbooks have become too expensive for them to buy. But the real inspiration comes from a fascination for the spectacular geology of western Canada and the many decades that the author spent exploring this region along with colleagues, students, family, and friends. My goal has been to provide an accessible and comprehensive guide to the important topics of geology, richly illustrated with examples from western Canada. Although this text is intended to complement a typical first-year course in physical geology, its contents could be applied to numerous other related courses.

Book Earth Time and Life

Download or read book Earth Time and Life written by Charles W. Barnes and published by . This book was released on 1988-05-04 with total page 564 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This revision of the successful physical/historical geology text offers complete coverage of the basic principles underlying each specialty. While devoting separate sections to the physical and historical aspects of geology, historical perspectives are skillfully integrated throughout the text to enhance and deepen student understanding of historical geological developments while demonstrating the link between the two branches of the field. This edition has been updated and revised to include a new chapter on structural geology, an expanded discussion of energy, and separate treatments of metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Discussions of physical geology emphasize internal processes and products in order to expose students to the dynamics of earthquakes and plate tectonics. In addition, this edition features more illustrations designed to emphasize what students would actually see in the field. Each chapter includes a listing of key terms, a summary of major ideas discussed, numerous exercises, and suggested readings. Also provides a glossary and appendixes, including rock identification charts, topographic and geologic maps, and a measurement conversion table.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geology is the scientific study of the Earth's surface, its evolution and the processes that have led to its change. The demonstration of the age of the Earth, chronicling of the Earth's geological history, evidence for plate tectonics, and the understanding of past climates have been possible because of advancements in the field of geology. Rock analysis is the most significant area of geological studies. Rock can be of three types, namely sedimentary, igneous and metamorphic. The techniques used in geological investigations are fieldwork, chemical analysis, numerical modeling, rock description and physical experimentation. Hydrocarbon and mineral exploration, hydrological studies, understanding of natural hazards and past climates, etc. are explored from within the framework of geology. This textbook is a valuable compilation of topics, ranging from the fundamental to the most complex theories and principles in the field of geology. It further elucidates the techniques and applications of geology in a multidisciplinary manner. The book strives to be a complete source of information for all students who are looking for an elaborate reference text on geology.

For example, we can penetrate deep into the interior of our planet and effectively X-ray its internal structure. With this technology comes an increased awareness of how our planet is continually changing and a fresh awareness of how fragile it is. Designed for the introductory Physical Geology course found in Geology, Earth Science, Geography, or Physical Science departments, Dynamic Earth: An Introduction to Physical Geology clearly presents Earth's dynamic geologic systems with their many interdependent and interconnected components. It provides comprehensive coverage of the two major energy systems of Earth: the plate tectonic system and the hydrologic cycle. The text fulfills the needs of professors by offering current content and a striking illustration package, while exposing students to the global view of Earth and teaching them to view the world as geologists.
