Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to Chemical Preparations: A Guide in the Practical Teaching of Inorganic Chemistry In presenting to the public this translation of Professor Erdmann's book, it is hoped that in this form, which is more serviceable to the English-speaking student, it may aid in advancing the recognition due so important an adjunct in laboratory instruction in chemistry as that of the subject of inorganic chemical preparations. It is gratifying to see that recognition is being given to inorganic chemical preparations, by the introduction of work of this nature among the courses of some of our educational institutions. It is particularly desirable that this subject be given a broader scope than has hitherto been afforded it; for it gives to the student a specially broad field in which to acquire chemical manipulation of a quite varied nature. Then, too, with such a wisely chosen and diversified list of experiments as Professor Erdmann has made use of, the opportunity for the observation of phenomena of different kinds lends itself admirably to the development of chemical thought in a perfectly natural way. • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780854046355
  • Pages : 200 pages

Download or read book Chemical Formulation written by Tony Hargreaves and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2003 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical formulation can be traced back to Stone Age times, when hunter-gatherers attached flint arrowheads to shafts using a resin made from birch bark and beeswax. Today, formulated preparations are part of everyday life. Formulations based on surfactants are by far the most prolific, from shampoos and shower gels to emulsion paint and polishes. This book discusses the chemical technology of surfactants and related chemicals, using over forty examples of everyday products. Some basic theory on surface chemistry, molecular interactions and surfactant function is included to aid understanding. Chemical Formulation: An Overview of Surfactant-based Preparations Used in Everyday Life then goes on to look at wider aspects such as surfactant manufacture, raw materials, environment, sustainability, analysis and testing. Throughout, common chemical names are used for formulation chemicals, further aiding the readability of the book. Bridging the gap between theory and application, this book will be invaluable to anyone wishing to broaden their knowledge of applied chemistry, including students on A level, BTEC and technician courses. It will also be of benefit to those new to the formulation industry.

The course is intended to familiarize advanced students with the methods and processes used in making inorganic compounds, and serves at the same time as a review in General Chemistry. It is supposed that the student who has finished the course is able without further assistance from an instructor to make any inorganic preparation. An attempt has been made to introduce all processes generally used, and at the same time to avoid repetition.
