Book An Introduction to the French Poets

Download or read book An Introduction to the French Poets written by Geoffrey Brereton and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-10 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French poetry of some five centuries is here surveyed in a series of studies of the work and personality of individual poets from Villon to the present day. Each chapter is primarily concerned with establishing the ‘literary identity’ of the poet or poets with whom it deals: the work of each is outlined and related to the historical and biographical circumstances in which it was written; and its characteristics are then examined critically in terms relevant to the modern reader. Comparisons are made between different poets, and more general topics – such as the concepts of ‘classic’ and ‘baroque’ – are discussed. This book, first published in 1956, had become a standard introductory work for students of French poetry and general readers alike. For this revised edition, originally published in 1973, new chapters have been added on ‘irregular’ seventeenth-century poets and on various modern poets whose work now enables the Surrealist movement to be seen in clearer perspective. The bibliography has been revised extensively.

Book French Individualist Poetry 1686 1760

Download or read book French Individualist Poetry 1686 1760 written by Robert Finch and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1971-12-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This anthology has a double aim: to present a body of poetry, none of it easily available, some of it never before reproduced, and to point up a particular trend, until now nearly lost sight of in the maze of generalizations about eighteenth-century French poetry. This trend, called individualist, in contradistinction to the academic and universalist trends of the century, has been chosen since it is the least known and most original of the three. The individualist poets are avowed moderns, and their attitude toward poetry and their concept of its nature often anticipate attitudes held by our poets of our own time. There has not been available to this point a sufficiently representative body of poems by these poets, a gap that Professors Finch and Joliat have attempts to fill with their anthology. Readers will find the notes to the poems especially useful, since many of them provide out-of-the-way background material and, as well, offer new insights into the poetry of the individualist poets as a group.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contemporary French poetry is unique in that it places a great emphasis on language itself. In this book, Jean-Jacques Thomas and Steven Winspur focus on the linguistic aspects of recent poems written in French. From Apollinaire and Eluard to the Oulipians, from the spacialists to Yves Bonnefoy and Andrée Chedid, from Max Jacob and Saint-John Perse to Edouard Glissant and Denis Roche, this book analyzes the innovations crafted by more than fifty writers. With its eleven chapters and extensive bibliography, this is the most comprehensive English-language introduction to French poetry of the twentieth century.
