Après un rappel de quelques notions fondamentales et une description sommaire du modèle standard, l'ouvrage s'attaque à une description des méthodes expérimentales et des calculs théoriques se rapportant aux processus subatomiques. Il aborde le concept de symétries et explique comment elles ont fourni un cadre théorique au modèle des quarks ainsi qu'aux théories de jauge sur lesquelles sont basées les intéractions électromagnétiques, faibles et fortes. L'exposé se termine par un survol rapide des principales approches d'unification des forces ou des extensions du modèle standard. Le texte est appuyé par de nombreux éléments pédagogiques.
