Book Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2

Download or read book Introduction to Quantum Mechanics 2 written by Ibrahima Sakho and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2020-01-13 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quantum mechanics is the foundation of modern technology, due to its innumerable applications in physics, chemistry and even biology. This second volume studies Schrödinger's equation and its applications in the study of wells, steps and potential barriers. It examines the properties of orthonormal bases in the space of square-summable wave functions and Dirac notations in the space of states. This book has a special focus on the notions of the linear operators, the Hermitian operators, observables, Hermitian conjugation, commutators and the representation of kets, bras and operators in the space of states. The eigenvalue equation, the characteristic equation and the evolution equation of the mean value of an observable are introduced. The book goes on to investigate the study of conservative systems through the time evolution operator and Ehrenfest's theorem. Finally, this second volume is completed by the introduction of the notions of quantum wire, quantum wells of semiconductor materials and quantum dots in the appendices.

Book lectronique et opto lectronique organiques

Download or read book lectronique et opto lectronique organiques written by Andre Moliton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-08-26 with total page 540 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Introduction to a Submolecular Biology

Download or read book Introduction to a Submolecular Biology written by Albert Szent-Gyorgyi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introduction to a Submolecular Biology focuses on the study of the electronic interactions of biological molecules. This book discusses the energy cycle of life, units and measures, electronic mobility, and problems of charge transfer. The three examples of charge transfer—quinone-hydroquinone, riboflavine (FMN) and serotonin, and cortisone I2 are elaborated. This text deliberates the problems and approaches on the mechanism of drug action, adenosine triphosphate (ATP), chemistry of the thymus gland, and living state. Brief remarks on water, ions, and metachromasia are also included. Other topics covered include the redox potentials, ionization potentials and electron affinities, orbital energies, electromagnetic coupling resonance transfer of energy, and semiconduction. This publication is a good source for biochemists, biologists, and specialists aiming to acquire basic knowledge of submolecular biology.

Book Miniaturization and Mass Spectrometry

Download or read book Miniaturization and Mass Spectrometry written by Severine le Gac and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2008-12-03 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent explosion in the use of analytical chemistry, particularly in the biological sciences, has led to a need for fast, reliable and highly sensitive tools able to handle small sample sizes. This book illustrates how microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip devices can satisfy the growing need for miniaturized and enhanced analysis. They lend themselves well to mass spectrometric detection as they use samples in the low microlitre range and are handled on a chip. Miniaturization and Mass Spectrometry focuses on one particular technique, mass spectrometry, whose popularity has increased dramatically in the last two decades with the increase in use of biological analysis and the development of two "soft" ionization techniques, ESI and MALDI. These enable the analysis of large but fragile biological molecules such as DNA, proteins and oligosaccharides. The book starts with an introduction to the coupling of microfluidics to mass spectrometry techniques. It then goes on demonstrate the advantages of such a coupling: the MS analysis benefits from improved sample preparation when performed on a chip while MS yields more information on the sample handled on the chip compared to conventional optical detection. A history on the developments in this field, starting from the off-chip coupling to the on-chip ionization, is also provided. Daniel Figeys, a pioneer in the development of microfluidic systems for MS analysis, describes the early beginnings of this hyphenated analysis technique. Solutions to couple microfluidic systems to the two most popular ionization methods, ESI and MALDI, are presented throughout the chapters. Various examples are given of the application of this microfluidics-MS hyphenated analysis technique to proteomics, metabolomics, organic chemistry and forensics. Coverage is not limited to academic research. The development of commercialized systems and their current use for routine biological analysis are also presented. Lastly, a future vision of the integration of the mass spectrometer on the chip is raised, as a last step to yield fully portable systems for on-site analysis.

Book Theoretical Organic Chemistry

Download or read book Theoretical Organic Chemistry written by C. Párkányi and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-12-09 with total page 637 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is devoted to the various aspects of theoretical organic chemistry. In the nineteenth century, organic chemistry was primarily an experimental, empirical science. Throughout the twentieth century, the emphasis has been continually shifting to a more theoretical approach. Today, theoretical organic chemistry is a distinct area of research, with strong links to theoretical physical chemistry, quantum chemistry, computational chemistry, and physical organic chemistry. The objective in this volume has been to provide a cross-section of a number of interesting topics in theoretical organic chemistry, starting with a detailed account of the historical development of this discipline and including topics devoted to quantum chemistry, physical properties of organic compounds, their reactivity, their biological activity, and their excited-state properties.

Book Liquid Crystals of One and Two Dimensional Order

Download or read book Liquid Crystals of One and Two Dimensional Order written by W. Helfrich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This conference on liquid crystals of one- and two-dimensional order and their applications is the third in a series of European conferences devoted mainly to smectic liquid crystals. Its purpose was to bring together people working on the frontiers of the field of liquid crystals. Ordinary nematic liquid crystals were left out in order to limit the size of the meeting. The number of registered participants still reached 148. The conference shed new light on the classification of smectic mesophases, especially through the interaction of the Halle (GDR) and Hull (England) groups. It saw lively discussions on the famous blue phase of cholesterics. There were illuminating presentations on lyotropic nematic liquid crystals, on reentrant nematics, mesomorphic polymer phases, and related subjects. Much room was given to bilayers, monolayers, and interfaces, mostly to further the use of the concepts and methods of liquid crystal physics in exploring bio membranes. Other topics were device applications of smectic and cholesteric liquid crystals and nematic polymers, both of which hold promise of techno logical breakthroughs, apart from their scientific interest.
