Book excerpt: In this book Kerry Whiteside introduces the work of a range of French ecological theorists to an English-speaking audience. He shows how thinkers in France and in English-speaking countries have produced different strains of ecological thought and suggests that the work of French ecological theorists could lessen pervasive tensions in Anglophone ecology. Much of the theory written in English is shaped by the debate between anthropocentric ecologists, who contend that the value of our nonhuman surroundings derives from their role in fulfilling human interests, and ecocentric ecologists, who contend that the nonhuman world holds ultimate value in and of itself. This debate is almost nonexistent among French theorists, who tend to focus on the processes linking nature and human identity. Whiteside suggests that the insights of French theorists could help English-language theorists to extricate themselves from endless debates over the real center of nature's value. Among the French theorists discussed are Denis de Rougemont, Denis Duclos, René Dumont, Luc Ferry, André Gorz, Félix Guattari, Bruno Latour, Alain Lipietz, Edgar Morin, Serge Moscovici, and Michel Serres. The English-language theorists discussed include John Barry, Robyn Eckersley, Robert Goodin, Tim Hayward, Holmes Rolston III, and Paul Taylor.

Download or read book The Evaluation of Toxicological Data for the Protection of Public Health written by W. J. Hunter and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2016-07-29 with total page 429 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Evaluation of Toxicological Data for the Protection of Public Health: Proceedings of the International Colloquium, Luxembourg, December 1976 focuses on the review of toxicological tests and methods used in toxicological evaluation of chemicals and reconsideration of these procedures in identifying decision-making processes involved in the protection of public health. The selection first discusses reviews of toxicological tests, including introductory remarks and comments on acute toxicity; problems associated with the testing of environmental mutagens; and the testing of carcinogenic potentials. The publication also examines the uncertainties related to the evaluation of the health hazards of environmental chemicals from toxicological data and epidemiological monitoring of indices of chemical hazards. The book takes a look at safety factors and their application in toxicological evaluation; ecotoxicological approaches for the protection of environment and health; and use of biological materials as environmental pollution gauges. The text also discusses acute toxicity, teratogenic effects of pollutants, and examples of ecotoxicological research. The selection is a dependable source of data for readers interested in the evaluation of toxicological data relative to the protection of public health.

  • Author : Chiara Zampieri
  • Publisher : Leuven University Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “L’Étrurie est à la mode”, French archaeologist Salomon Reinach bluntly stated in 1927. Since the beginning of the nineteenth century, Etruria had not only been attracting the attention of archaeologists and specialists of all sorts, but it had also been a fascinating and, in some cases, captivating destination for poets, novelists, painters and sculptors from all over Europe. This volume deals with the impact of the constantly expanding knowledge on the Etruscans and their mysterious civilisation on Italian, French, English, and German literature, arts and culture, with particular regard to the modernist period (1890–1950). The volume brings a distinctive point of view to the subject by approaching it from an interdisciplinary and comparative perspective, and by looking at a quite diverse range of topics and artefacts, which includes, but is not limited to, the study of drawings, art works, travel essays, novels, cooking recipes, schoolbooks, photographs, and movies. By exploring a new paradigm to understand ancient cultures, beyond the traditional ideas and models of “reception of the classics”, and by challenging the alleged fracture between the so-called “two cultures” of humanities and natural sciences, Modern Etruscans will be of interest to scholars from various disciplines. Designed as a learning tool for university courses on the interplay between literature and science in the twentieth century, it is suited as recommended reading for students in the humanities.

Book Music in Society

Download or read book Music in Society written by Ivo Supičić and published by Pendragon Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 510 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The subject of this study has two distinct but not unrelated aspects: first, an investigation into the sociology of music as an autonomous and specialized discipline; and second, an examination of certain fundamental facts that may be considered within the purview of the sociology of music itself. If an analysis and study even a preliminary one of these facts is to be properly focused and fruitful, we must first try to determine the subject and methods of the sociology of music, its position and boundaries in respect to musicology, and, most especially, its relation to the aesthetics of music and music history. It is equally indispensable to ascertain what the sociology of music as a separate scholarly discipline embraces, where its investigation leads, and, finally, to establish its position vis-a-vis sociology in general.
