Book UNITE History Volume 5 1974 1992

Download or read book UNITE History Volume 5 1974 1992 written by Mary Davis and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2023-05-01 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume traces the history of the TGWU from its zenith in the period of the Labour Government to its nadir in 1992. It easily divides itself into two distinct periods. The first from 1974-79 saw a reforming Labour government which, recognising trade union strength, was determined to ‘bring about a fundamental and irreversible shift in the balance of power and wealth in favour of working people’. It marked the zenith of the TGWU in which the union played an important role, overseeing the repeal of anti-union Industrial Relation Act, and the enactment of a raft of pro-worker legislation. But this was insufficient to sustain the 'Social Contract' between the Labour Government and the Trade Unions– leading to the ‘Winter of Discontent’ and the Tory election victory of 1979. The second period, 1979-92, witnessed the nadir of the TGWU. A right wing Conservative government led by Margaret Thatcher, was determined to reverse all the gains of preceding Labour administrations. Anti-union legislation and the cruel tool of unemployment created the economic and political conditions to decimate trade unions. Defensive struggles could not stop the defeats suffered by car workers, miners, printers and dockers. Trade union membership declined in the Thatcher years, leading to a bleak period of industrial defeat and union retrenchment, characterised by mergers and reorganisation - mitigated only by positive moves to tackle endemic racism and sexism in an attempt to involve previously disregarded women and black workers.

Download or read book Introduction to Company Law written by Paul Davies and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-31 with total page 534 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the financial crisis of 2007 to 2009 the role of the company in society, especially the role of publicly traded companies, has acquired a political salience that was largely absent in the decades before the crisis. This concern has been reflected in both enhanced reporting requirements and in the latest version of the Corporate Governance and Stewardship Codes applicable to the largest companies. This books analyses these developments in full, as well as the more fundamental proposals for reform of corporate law that have been advanced outside official circles. The book also examines the functions of the five core features of company law-separate legal personality, limited liability, centralized management, shareholder control, and transferability of shares. It finally analyses the legal strategies available for moderating the frictions that these core features nevertheless generate for those providing the necessary inputs for a company's business. Written by one of the field's foremost experts, Paul Davies' Introduction to Company Law provides a comprehensive conceptual introduction to the subject, giving readers a clear framework with which to navigate the intricacies of company law.

Book Labor Divided in the Postwar European Welfare State

Download or read book Labor Divided in the Postwar European Welfare State written by Dennie Oude Nijhuis and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2013-06-24 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains how the success of attempts to expand the boundaries of the postwar welfare state in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom depended on organized labor's willingness to support redistribution of risk and income among different groups of workers. By illuminating and explaining differences within and between labor union movements, it traces the historical origins of 'inclusive' and 'dual' welfare systems. In doing so, the book shows that labor unions can either have a profoundly conservative impact on the welfare state or act as an impelling force for progressive welfare reform. Based on an extensive range of archive material, this book explores the institutional foundations of social solidarity.
