Physical activity (PA) levels decline with age starting in preadolescence, with marked disparities among underserved (racial/ethnic minority, low-income) youth, particularly girls. Factors within the social and physical environments appear to influence youth PA, but few studies have investigated their potential impact on accelerometer-measured activity of underserved youth. Purpose: This study examines how multi-level factors (individual: age, sex, BMI; social: transportation support; environmental: neighborhood characteristics) interact to influence a continuum of accelerometer-measured youth activity behaviors. Methods: Participants wore an accelerometer for 7 days. PA levels were classified as sedentary (50 mg), light (50-150 mg), moderate (150-500 mg), vigorous (>500mg), and MVPA (>=150 mg). Average daily minutes spent in PA and sedentary behaviors during waking time, the prevalence of meeting MVPA guidelines, and PA volume were estimated from accelerometer data. Three-way between-groups multivariate analysis of variance examined adjusted differences between age, sex, and weight status groups across activity outcomes. Main moderation analyses explored the effects of parent-perceived neighborhood environment and child BMI percentile in the relationship between transportation support and total child PA. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of three independent physical activity curricula on physical activity level. Additionally, this study examined the differing training effects resulting from participation in the three different curricula. Physical activity programs in schools can be divided into two basic groups, health-related programs and skill-related programs. This study consisted of a skill-related group, health-related group and a control group. Height, weight, body composition, throwing test for accuracy, one-half mile run test for time and physical activity questionnaire were administered pre-and posttreatment. Participants consisted of three third grade classes at St. Gabriel Elementary School in Charlotte, North Carolina. Twenty-seven males and thirty-one females participated twice a week for eight weeks. Physical activity level was not affected by participation in any of the three groups. The skill group was the only group to significantly increase in the throw test (0.79 ± 1.09SE, p = .05). The control group was the only group to increase in the one-half mile run for time (0.53 ± 0.69, p = .007) and percent body fat (4.16 ± 6.62%, p = 0.04). These results show children do increase throwing skills after participation in throwing activities and instruction. Conversely, the health group showed no change in the health-related variable, but also showed no change in percent body fat.

Book excerpt: Past research has shown classroom lessons incorporating physical activity (10-15 minutes in duration) to improve on-task behavior in children (Mahar, 2006; Grieco, Bartholomew & Jowers, 2009). However, no study to date has examined the levels of physical activity required to elicit this response. As such, the present study was designed to assess the effects of physically active, academic lessons of varying intensity, set in game-type format, on academic engagement of preadolescent children in the classroom setting. Time spent on-task (measured through direct observation) served as the primary outcome variable and assessed by means of a two (time: pre-, post-lesson) x four [condition: inactive lesson (physical activity control); sedentary academic game (interest control); low-to-moderate intensity physically active academic game; moderate-to-vigorous intensity physically active academic game] repeated measures design. Participants were third, fourth and fifth grade children from two elementary schools in central Texas (7 to 11 years of age). Physical activity was measured using Actigraph GT1M accelerometers (Fort Walton Beach, FL). Demographic data were collected for each participant on gender, age, ethnicity, height and weight (BMI calculated). Results indicated that the students' TOT decreased significantly after a traditional seated control lesson. TOT did not change following the inactive control game. Thus, the competitive, seated game was sufficient to prevent the reduction in TOT that followed the traditional, seated control. In contrast, both physically active games were sufficient to increase TOT. Both had a significant increase in TOT relative to each control condition. In addition, the effect of the MVPA game was nearly three times the effect of the LMPA game.

Book excerpt: There is overwhelming evidence linking increased physical activity with positive changes in cognitive functioning and brain health. Much of what we know about these interrelationships comes from aerobic exercise training studies with older adults and children. This literature has paved the way for the neuroscientific investigation of mechanisms responsible for exercise-induced cognitive and brain health enhancement, a list that ranges from molecular changes to systemic changes in executive control and neural connectivity. A new perspective has also emerged that aims to understand executive control processes that may underlie the regulation of health behavior. In accordance with this view, physical activity falls under the umbrella of health behaviors that require a substantial amount of executive control. Executive control is a limited resource, and the aging process depletes this resource. People who regularly exercise are said to have higher “self-regulatory control”—planning, goal-shielding and impulse control—than irregular exercisers. The successful maintenance of physical activity participation in lieu of daily cognitive stressors likely reflects an adaptive resistance to control failures. Indeed, a handful of studies have shown the relationship between greater executive control and subsequently higher levels of physical activity. However, little is known about the neural correlates of physical activity adherence or sedentary behavior, with the view that neurocognitive factors have an antecedent and reciprocal influence on these behaviors. No research has focused on the brain networks responsible for the self-regulation of physical activity, which likely overlaps with structures and functions playing critical roles in the regulation of other health behaviors. Interdisciplinary investigations are needed to explain the extent to which physical activity self-regulation and self-regulatory failure is dependent upon, or under the influence of executive control processes and brain networks. Understanding the degree to which self-regulatory resources may be enhanced, restored, and trained will have enormous implications for basic science and applied fields. It is also of great import to understand whether or not physical activity self-regulation is a domain-specific behavior associated with specific brain networks, or to determine the extent to which regulatory network-sharing occurs. The aim of this Frontiers Research Topic is to curate contributions from researchers in social and cognitive neurosciences and related fields, whose work involves the study of physical activity behavior, self-regulation and executive control. For this Research Topic, we, therefore, solicit reviews, original research articles, and opinion papers, which draw theoretical or empirical connections related to sustained physical activity behavior, self-regulatory strategies, cognitive performance, and brain structure and function. While focusing on work in the neurosciences, this Research Topic also welcomes contributions in the form of behavioral studies, psychophysiological investigations, and methodological innovations. This Frontiers Research Topic will carve out new directions for the fields of exercise, cognitive, and social neurosciences. We hope you will consider submitting your work.
