Book excerpt: Most of the research incorporated in this monograph was initially undertaken as part of the author's Ph.D. dissertation submitted to the School of Urban and Public Affairs, Carnegie-Mellon University. The research was funded through a Doctoral Dissertation Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. The dissertation was a winning entry in the 1979-80 Ph.D. Disser tation Competition of the North American Regional Science Association, funded through a grant from the Economic Development Agency of the U.S. Depart ment of Commerce. Revisions and extensions of the initial research were con ducted at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. I would like to thank in particular Chang-I Hua for his guidance and direc tion in reviewing this research. The specific aim of the volume is to explore mobility in the city at different times, from the XVIIth century to today, and to relate it to the respective social dynamics from different standpoints, moving back and forth from the building to the neighbourhood and the wider metropolis, from Tunis to Paris, from Naples to Barcelone, passing through Rome, Milan and Marseille. The approach adopted is strongly multidisciplinary. The authors come from different disciplines - from History to Demography, from Sociology to Geography -, which has allowed to decline the study of intra-urban mobility both through a look at individuals and their mobility practices and from a territorial and historical context. In so doing, a set of urban issues has been considered, such as social mobility, metropolization processes, migrations and inequalities, access to real estate market.

Reflecting an increasing concern for the incoming, housing, and psychological needs of the elderly, the authors suggest how existing programs should be developed. The research study, conducted by the Institute for Environmental Studies at the University of Pennsylvania, is presented in five sections. The opening section surveys advances made in relocation policy throughout the nation with the advent of large-scale redevelopment as a factor on the urban scene. Chapter 2 describes the elderly population subject to displacement and evaluates the ability of elderly persons to meet the rigors of urban life. In this section major existing programs are described along with their capacity to serve the needs of the relocated elderly. The authors then review four demonstration projects associated with the study. The study closes with a comprehensive statement of recommendations. The book is based, in large part, on several years' research into the relocation of elderly persons, conducted by the Institute for Environmental Studies in cooperation with the National Association of Housing and Redevelopment Officials. Directing the study was Chester Rapkin, then Professor of City Planning at the University of Pennsylvania, and assisting him in the capacity of Director of Field Operations was Mary K. But unlike other markets, the housing market is able to profoundly transform the socioeconomic structure and the image of a city. Very often, changes in urban space are the result of the imperceptible operation of a multitude of micro-transformations which act with such great energy and decisiveness that they can transform the ‘DNA’ of entire urban neighborhoods. These qualitative novelties, unpredictable and non-deducible on the basis of the previous properties, are defined emergences. Namely emergence means a ‘pattern formation’ characterized by a self-organizing process driven by non-linear dynamics. This book explores housing market emergence in light of three different phenomena: search for housing, social polarization, and gentrification. The book is divided into two parts. The first part presents contributions on modelling emergence of different phenomena, formalised in multi-agent systems. The second part gathers empirical research and analyses aimed at supporting the findings of the models.

At the time, the program carried the name "Between Individual Development and Social Solidarity: Pop ulation and Society in a Period of Transition. " The goals of the Priority Program were threefold: To reduce the fragmentation of research on population issues; to increase collabora tion among population researchers with different disciplinary back grounds; and to strengthen the position of population studies in Dutch academe and in international forums. Looking back over eight years of programed research, we can safely say that the Priority Program has given an enormous impetus to population research in the Netherlands - as this volume attests. This program of research could not have been carried out success fully without the valuable contributions and constructive input of a large group of scientists. The scope and the focus of the Priority Program were defined by a preparatory committee chaired by Gerard Frinking.

The model is cast explicitly in terms of a rigorous model of housing demand, allowing the benefits from moving to be measured as the compensating income variation of the potential change in consumption. The empirical results indicate that large changes in economic variables, such as income and prices produce only small potential gains from moving and that a major factor in the moving decision is the magnitude of search and moving costs.
