Book excerpt: This authoritative new collection presents a selection of previously published seminal articles that have led to the development of intra-industry trade theory and empirical research. Parts I and II cover the pioneering research in the 1960s and a number of models of intra-industry trade that were developed from 1979 to the present day. Parts III and IV look at the empirical research problems in the choice of measure of intra-industry trade and empirical studies that seek to identify the nature of this trade. Part V deals with the role of the multinational corporation and part VI completes the collection with articles that look at extensions to asset markets and applications to other problems such as the geography of trade and rules of origin. Download or read book Trade and Industrial Development in East Asia written by Peter C. Y. Chow and published by Edward Elgar Publishing. This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Trade as an engine of growth has played a catalyst role in East Asian development; through vigorous study of performances in past decades, East Asian trade and industrialization experiences may offer some lessons for other developing countries. This book covers trade and industrial structures for ten countries and regions including Japan, China, Hong Kong, Korea, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand. The author addresses the comparative advantages and trade similarity indices of Asian economies from regional and global perspectives. He also analyzes the impacts of regional trade agreements from both member and non-member countries' perspectives. After a vigorous examination of the sources of export growth by the methodology of the constant market share analysis, the book examines the trade–investment nexus, the development of fragmentation of manufacturing production, and trade in parts and components as the dominant trade flows after the mid-1980s. It then studies the trade complementarity index among countries to further pursue the analysis of natural trading partners, and looks at the Krugman–Baldwin hub–spoke thesis by empirically identifying the 'degree of hub-ness' in three major markets in China, Japan, and the USA. Various scenarios of economic integration in East Asia are assessed and an open regionalism is proposed for East Asian economic integration and sustainable development in the conclusion of the book. Students and researchers of international trade, economic development, and Asian Studies will find the data and analyses in the volume invaluable in understanding the economic development of the Asia Pacific.

Download or read book Macroeconomic Linkage written by Takatoshi Ito and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2009-02-15 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores East Asia's macroeconomic experience in the 1980s and the economic impact of East Asia's growth on the rest of the world. The authors explore the causes of capital flows, changes in trade balances, and exchange rate fluctuations in East Asia and their effects on other countries. These fourteen papers are organized around four themes: the overall determinants of growth and trading relations in the East Asian region; monetary policies in relation to capital controls and capital accounts; the impact of exchange rate behavior on industrial structure; and the potential for greater regional integration. The contributors examine interactions among exchange rate movements, trade balances, and capital flows; how government monetary policy affects capital flows; the effect of exchange rates on industrial structure, inventories, and prices; and the extent of regional integration in East Asia.

Download or read book How Does Industrialization Affect the Structure of International Trade the Japanese Experience in the Pacific Basin 1975 85 written by Sayuri Shirai and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 1994-08-01 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper provides a theoretical model to address the issue of how industrialization affects the structure of international trade. Considering both horizontal and vertical product differentiation, the model shows that intra-industry trade increases when product quality improvement emerges in a developing country and when a difference in relative factor endowments between a developed and a developing countries shrinks. To promote understanding of the conclusions of the model, the paper also uses actual trade data between Japan and Indonesia and between Japan and Korea.
Download or read book Comparative Advantage Outward Foreign Direct Investment and Average Industry Productivity written by Yong Joon Jang and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this paper, we explicitly address the role of comparative advantage in effects of outward FDI on domestic productivity, both theoretically and empirically. In the theoretical framework, we place Irarrazabal, Moxnes and Opromolla's (2009) outward FDI model into Bernard, Redding and Schott's (2007) framework of international trade with heterogeneous monopolistically competitive firms and comparative advantage; and show that ex ante high average industry productivity triggered by firm self-selection enhances ex post average industry productivity during the process of increase in FDI. Using Korean industry-level data from 1992 to 2008, we also empirically test our theoretical predictions using the fixed effect model as a benchmark model, followed by system GMM estimation methods for sensitivity analysis. Our empirical findings suggest that Korean outward FDI is positively correlated with domestic productivity and this link is likely to take place in those sectors above median competitiveness measured as export-based RCA (Revealed Comparative Advantage). Thus, we find that the empirical results were consistent with previous theoretical predictions as well as our analysis.
