Book The Black Experience and Navigating Higher Education Through a Virtual World

Download or read book The Black Experience and Navigating Higher Education Through a Virtual World written by Hairston, Kimetta R. and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2021-06-25 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The treasure of the Black experience at a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) is that it offers a personal and intimate experience rooted in Black heritage that cannot be found at other institutions. On campus, face-to-face instruction and activities focused on addressing issues that plague the Black community are paramount. This provides students with small classroom environments and the personal support from administrators, faculty, and staff. In March 2020, the Black experience was interrupted when a global pandemic forced governors to declare states of emergencies and mandate stay-at-home orders. The stay-at-home orders forced universities to transition into fully remote environments. Doing so heightened an array of emotions compounded by the reality of previously recognized disparities in resources and funding amongst higher education institutions. As a result of this abrupt transformation, the HBCU experience was impacted by positive and negative implications for Black people at the campus, local, state, and national levels. The Black Experience and Navigating Higher Education Through a Virtual World explores the reality of the Black experience from various perspectives involving higher education institutions with a focus on HBCUs. The book provides an overview and analysis of a virtual experience that goes beyond the day-to-day technological implications and exposes innovative ideas and ways of navigating students and faculty through a remote world. It focuses on heightening the awareness of disparities through the Black experience in a virtual environment, provides guidance on transitioning to fully remote environments, examines leadership dynamics in virtual environments, analyzes mental health balance, and examines implications on the digital divide. Covering topics such as online course delivery, self-health, and social justice, this book is essential for graduate students, academicians, diversity officers in the academy, professors, and researchers.

Book To Stop a Tyrant

Download or read book To Stop a Tyrant written by Ira Chaleff and published by Greenleaf Book Group. This book was released on 2024-09-03 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whatever your political beliefs, you are likely to be concerned about the potential impact of destructive political leaders on your country and those you love. You may want to do something about this but feel limited in your ability to make a difference. Based on his extensive experience in the political world, Ira Chaleff demonstrates that we have more power than we think. But this power must be used in timely and politically savvy ways. He unpacks the choices for action depending on our circle of influence in relation to leaders—both those we support and oppose—and identifies the window of opportunity for interrupting a progression from governance to tyrannical rule. The window in which you need to act before it closes. Chaleff spent thirty years with a non-partisan organization in Washington, D.C., working to improve communication between constituents and their elected representatives. He has seen the best and worst of both Democrats and Republicans. He understands the influential role played by their staffs and constituents. He will show you, too, how to make a difference. Building on the success of his award-winning books, The Courageous Follower and Intelligent Disobedience, Chaleff’s timely new book provides a map for creating better political leadership—the leadership we crave for our communities and our nation – through better followership. His work with the US Congress took him to engagements in countries struggling to establish viable democracies after years of dictatorial rule. His work with federal executive-branch agencies gave him further insight into the relationship of elected officials, their political appointees, and career civil servants. Even readers with long histories of government service will find new ways of navigating the dilemmas they face. Chaleff’s ideas on leadership, and his unique perspective on followership, have found their way into the cultures of the US military and civilian agencies, and globally in institutions such as the European Union, the British Army, and African and Asian leadership development programs. He has served on the board of the International Leadership Association and was a visiting leadership scholar at Churchill College, The University of Cambridge, England. He continues to work with the global followership community and to write and lecture from his home in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.

Book excerpt: Poison— invisible, unknown, hard to detect and deadly— taps into hard-wired anxieties about the risks of the world around us. From ancient times to the modern age, it has always created more fear than any other threats. In A Basilisk Glance: Poisoners from Plato to Putin, author Robert Templer takes us through the dark maze of poison. He traces its path from when Hercules dipped his arrows in the blood from the severed head of the Hydra to the use of chemical weapons in the Iran-Iraq War in 1980s, from the death of Socrates to the use of toxins as a weapon of assassination, from the mass suicide of Jonestown in 1979 to the sarin attack in the Tokyo metro system.Today, as the war in Ukraine rages, we are reminded of the use of radioactive and nerve weapons by Russian President Vladimir Putin to kill his opponents. His targets— like other victims of poison through the ages— know that they are never safe; a cup of tea, a door handle or even their own underwear might be tainted with a deadly toxin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ivory Tower: Perspectives of Women of Color in Higher Education highlights the voices of women of color in academia. When institutions ignore these voices by continuing to overlook the obstacles and experiences of women of color in higher education, they systematically derail their success. Hearing and understanding the firsthand accounts of women of color is a critical component in the recruitment, retention, and success of women of color. This book serves as the platform for allowing women of color to share their narratives. While it is important to acknowledge that women of color in the academe often face the double-jeopardy of race and gender bias, the chapter authors’ personal experiences tout critical themes paramount for responding to these biases. As they rightfully take their place in higher education, these themes include establishing boundaries to promote socio-emotional preservation; recognizing the value of mentorship; becoming resilient during the journey; and acknowledging one’s identity to be your authentic self.

Book Animal Farm Prophecy Fulfilled in Africa

Download or read book Animal Farm Prophecy Fulfilled in Africa written by Chiku Malunga and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 2014-09-08 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal Farm Prophecy Fulfilled in Africa: A Call to a Values and Systems Revolution discusses why deep levels of poverty and suffering persist in Africa despite all the successive regime changes over the last half century. It discusses why more people are poorer now than they were in the colonial era. The author argues that this is so because most of the leadership change efforts on the continent focus on replacing individuals rather than changing or overhauling the negative systems and the values inherent in the systems that the individual leaders inherit, create or perpetuate. The problems persist because they are systemic rather than personal in nature. Deep and lasting change that could result in lifting millions of people out of poverty will only occur when the systems, rather than only the individuals, are changed or replaced. The author challenges ordinary citizens, especially the youth, to rise up against ‘animal farm systems’ in order to create the tomorrow to which they aspire and deserve.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade, the cocktail culture has exploded across America. Bars and lounges have become the Broadway theater of mixology, with bartenders resurrecting classic pre-Prohibition cocktails and dazzling customers with their creations. Consumers, in turn, are recreating these cocktails at home, and spending unprecedented amounts on upscale bar gear. With more and more emphasis on quality ingredients, the number of small-batch spirits is increasing all the time, and craft distilling has become popular as an offshoot of the locavore movement. In Iconic Spirits, Mark Spivak, wine and spirits guru and host of the NPR show Uncorked!, explores the history and cultural significance of twelve iconic spirits and reveals how moonshine invented NASCAR; how gin almost toppled the British Empire; how a drink that tastes like castor oil flavored with tree bark became one of the sexiest things on earth; how cognac became the "it" drink of hip-hop culture, and much more. To top it all off, Spivak then offers the most tantalizing cocktail recipes from the era in which each spirit was invented.
