These selected paragraphs distill the contents and give you a quick look inside Into the Highways and Hedges: Look inside the book: He saw very little of his girls as a rule, he had so many other things to think of (he was a great patron of art and letters, a dabbler in politics, and the most popular man in the county), but when he was with them he was charming, and petted them far more than was the fashion in those days. ...The girls had their meals in the schoolroom at the top of the house, with Miss Cripps, who, poor thing, had a dull enough time of it; and their world was quite distinct from their aunt's as a rule, though she occasionally invaded it, very much to their dismay. ...In the dead silence that followed, Meg's heart was beating wildly, she alone did not kneel; perhaps her education made any display of religious emotion more repugnant to her than to the rest of his audience; but her knees were shaking under her, and she turned white with the intensity of the awe with which she realised the presence of God.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Into the Highways and Hedges Before and since the days when Socrates found that it was impossible to live a quiet life, for that would be to disobey the deity, there have always been some souls who have counted it worth while to lose all else, if haply in the losing they might get nearer to the light from which they came. Their failures, their apparently hopeless mistakes, are often evident enough, yet the mistakes die, and the spirit which animates them lives. It would be dark, indeed, if the torches of those eager runners were to go out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Highways and Hedges

Download or read book Highways and Hedges written by John Stewart and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-25 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Hedges: Or, Fifty Years of Western Methodism This was followed up by solicitations from my friends that I would prepare and publish an autobiography. After a good deal of hesitation I have yielded to that solicitation, and here is the result of my effort. I have given the names of those admitted on trial into the Ohio Conference from the year 1816 to the year 1866, a period of fifty years. I have also given the names and brief biographical notices of those of her members that have fallen in death during that period. This arrangement gives somewhat of a monotonous be ginning to the several chapters, but will be convenient for reference. Though I have expressed my views fully of the characteristics of my colleagues and presiding elders, and the many preachers who have been associated with me during the years of my pastorate and presiding eldership, yet I have been so fortunate in these associa tions, that there have been very few of them of whom I found it necessary to say aught but good. If my book shall meet the reasonable expectations of my friends, and above all if it shall be made a blessing to others after I shall have gone to join my comrades in the Church above, I shall, not have labored or prayed in vain. Book excerpt: In Sir Edward Leithen Complete Collection, John Buchan presents readers with a series of mystery and thriller novels that follow the adventures of the titular character, Sir Edward Leithen. The stories are characterized by their fast-paced plots, intricate mysteries, and well-developed characters. Buchan's writing style is classic and engaging, drawing readers in with his suspenseful storytelling and vivid descriptions of the Scottish landscapes in which the stories are set. These novels are a fascinating glimpse into the early 20th-century mystery genre, with a focus on intellect and deduction. The collection includes six titles that showcase Buchan's mastery of the genre and his ability to keep readers on the edge of their seats. John Buchan, a Scottish novelist and historian, was known for his adventurous spirit and keen interest in politics and espionage. His background in both law and literature provided him with a unique perspective that informed his writing, making his novels both entertaining and thought-provoking. Buchan's own experiences in politics and military intelligence likely influenced the creation of Sir Edward Leithen, a character who navigates the complexities of power and secrecy in a changing world. I recommend Sir Edward Leithen Complete Collection to readers who enjoy classic mystery and thriller novels with a strong sense of atmosphere and character development. Buchan's storytelling and Leithen's adventures will captivate fans of the genre and provide a satisfying reading experience for those looking for a literary escape into the world of early 20th-century mystery fiction.

Book excerpt: For over one hundred years, Christians have gotten up and gone to bed with Charles Spurgeon's devotional Morning and Evening as a companion. With a reading to begin and end each day throughout the year, you will come to appreciate Spurgeon's emphasis on the importance of abiding in Christ and meditating on God's Word. His wisdom and counsel provide a timeless guide through the trials and triumphs of the year. The richness of his biblical understanding offers readers a look into the heart of one of England's foremost pastors and enduring Christian authors. His lasting message is even more accessible with Alistair Begg's careful modernizing of Spurgeon's English. Begg, who has a deep love for Spurgeon's preaching and especially for this work, has maintained Spurgeon's clear passion and commitment to Christ. Using the English Standard Version as the scriptural text provides an accurate, understandable accompaniment to Spurgeon's lessons. This updated version of a devotional classic is a timely and much-needed encouragement for today's Christian.
