Book excerpt: Willy Jack Cortez loves baseball, hunting, fishing, and being outdoors. Except for the fact that he suffers from claustrophobia, he is like any other normal teen. But any normalcy he had in his life changed on his seventeenth birthday when he inherited an alien sword with magical properties from a deceased grandfather whom he's never met. From there Willy's day gets even weirder. He is visited by an alien messenger and learns that his grandfather had been a passenger on the spacecraft that crashed near Roswell, New Mexico in 1947. Furthermore, he also learns from the messenger that his grandfather's true identity was William I, King of Whiterook and Willy is the sole heir to the throne. However, there is one catch. Along with the sword and kingdom, Willy also inherits a prophecy written more than sixty years before his birth, a prophecy which will send him on a quest light years from Earth and plunge him into the medieval world of the four kingdoms, a land of exquisite beauty, yet also filled with many dangers. A land where dragons, gargoyles, elves, demons, and giant birds of prey called Warbirds are all very real. Once there, Willy quickly discovers that being a royal prince is nothing like he had imagined it would be. Not only is it very demanding, but it could also get him killed. As the heir to Whiterook, his very presence has put him on a collision course with a powerful demon lord, named Daemon...and only one of them can live. Willy must rely on his Indian skills learned in the wild and his knowledge of 20th century battle tactics in order to survive. His only weapons are his grandfather's sword, a fierce eagle named Terunga, and a loquacious alien machine called Gyver that speaks directly to his brain.

With Robbie in another city (thank goodness for texting) and Kennedy as his co-editor of the school newspaper, Arthur's final year at Terry Fox Jr. High is off to a rocky start. A chance to produce his own play gives him visions of fame and (finally!) the respect he is sure he deserves, but that's all dashed when the new principal challenges the content of Arthur's play. Never one to take no for an answer, Arthur uses his wit (and his own column in the school paper) to skewer censorship . . . He so irks the principal that now the grad prom is in danger of being cancelled --much to Kennedy's dismay. In typical fashion, Arthur won't back down, even when Kennedy pleads with him. Torn between the wishes of his fellow students and his own best chance for fame, what will Arthur decide?

Download or read book Baroque Aesthetics in Contemporary American Horror written by Gabriel Eljaiek-Rodríguez and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-12-10 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces a trend that has emerged in recent years within the modern panorama of American horror film and television, the concurrent—and often overwhelming—use of multiple stock characters, themes and tropes taken from classics of the genre. American Horror Story, Insidious and The Conjuring are examples of a filmic tendency to address a series of topics and themes so vast that at first glance each taken separately would seem to suffice for individual films or shows. This book explores this trend in its visible connections with American Horror, but also with cultural and artistic movements from outside the US, namely Baroque art and architecture, Asian Horror, and European Horror. It analyzes how these hybrid products are constructed and discusses the socio-political issues that they raise. The repeated and excessive barrage of images, tropes and scenarios from distinct subgenres of iconic horror films come together to make up an aesthetic that is referred to in this book as Baroque Horror. In many ways similar to the reactions provoked by the artistic movement of the same name that flourished in the XVII century, these productions induce shock, awe, fear, and surprise. Eljaiek-Rodríguez details how American directors and filmmakers construct these narratives using different and sometimes disparate elements that come together to function as a whole, terrifying the audience through their frenetic accumulation of images, tropes and plot twists. The book also addresses some of the effects that these complex films and series have produced both in the panorama of contemporary horror, as well as in how we understand politics in a divisive world that pushes for ideological homogenizations.
