Download or read book The Ethereal Aether written by Loyd S. Swenson and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 1972-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Ethereal Aether is a historical narrative of one of the great experiments in modern physical science. The fame of the 1887 Michelson-Morley aether-drift test on the relative motion of the earth and the luminiferous aether derives largely from the role it is popularly supposed to have played in the origins, and later in the justification, of Albert Einstein’s first theory of relativity; its importance is its own. As a case history of the intermittent performance of an experiment in physical optics from 1880 to 1930 and of the men whose work it was, this study describes chronologically the conception, experimental design, first trials, repetitions, influence on physical theory, and eventual climax of the optical experiment. Michelson, Morley, and their colleague Miller were the prime actors in this half-century drama of confrontation between experimental and theoretical physics. The issue concerned the relative motion of “Spaceship Earth” and the Universe, as measured against the background of a luminiferous medium supposedly filling all interstellar space. At stake, it seemed, were the phenomena of astronomical aberration, the wave theory of light, and the Newtonian concepts of absolute space and time. James Clerk Maxwell’s suggestion for a test of his electromagnetic theory was translated by Michelson into an experimental design in 1881, redesigned and reaffirmed as a null result with Morley in 1887, thereafter modified and partially repeated by Morley and Miller, finally completed in 1926 by Miller alone, then by Michelson’s team again in the late 1920s. Meanwhile Helmholtz, Kelvin, Rayleigh, FitzGerald, Lodge, Larmor, Lorentz, and Poincaré—most of the great names in theoretical physics at the turn of the twentieth century—had wrestled with the anomaly presented by Michelson’s experiment. As the relativity and quantum theories matured, wave-particle duality was accepted by a new generation of physicists. The aether-drift tests disproved the old and verified the new theories of light and electromagnetism. By 1930 they seemed to explain Einstein, relativity, and space-time. But in historical fact, the aether died only with its believers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “MacLeod is set to become a writer of the magnitude of Dickens or Tolkien.” —The Guardian Aether is industry, industry is magic and the Great Guilds rule the known world. Raised amid the smokestakes, terraced houses and endless subterranean pounding of the aether engines of the Yorkshire town of Bracebridge, Robert Borrows is nevertheless convinced that life holds a greater destiny than merely working endless shifts for one of the Lesser Guilds. Then, on a day out with his mother to the strange gardens and weirdly encrusted towers of a remote mansion, he encounters a wizened changeling, and the young girl in her charge called Anna, and glimpses a world of wonder, mystery and surprise. From then on, as he flees to London in the hope of escape and advancement, and explores its wide streets and dark alleys, and all the tiers of society from the lowest to the highest, he comes to realize that he holds the keys to secrets far bigger than even he imagined. A dazzling melange of Dickens and Peake, flavored with steampunk and magical realism, yet seen through a kaleidoscopically individual gaze, in The Light Ages, double World Fantasy Award winner Ian R MacLeod has created a novel for this and every age. Praise for The Light Ages: “MacLeod's descriptive powers are so effective that you can visualize every detail... [He] skillfully incorporates literary influences ranging from William Blake to Dickens to 1984 and the working class novels of the 1950s—and arrives at something original. Magical, visionary and enthralling, The Light Ages is award-winning stuff.” —SFX “Totally convincing and vividly written, this book invests the dark streets of London with a magic the reader will never forget... a brilliant writer.” —Tim Powers “A haunting fantasy version of Victorian England... brought to life with compassionate characters and lyrical writing.” —The Denver Post “The novel's industrial alternative London echoes Dickens in its rich bleakness and M. John Harrison's Viriconium in its inventive Gothic complexity. A gripping page-turner. A hearty read. Rising star Ian R MacLeod offers an original political fable rivaling in ambition and execution the very best of today's new science fantasies.” —Michael Moorcock

Book excerpt: Forgetting her is impossible. Remembering him could kill her. Left with partial amnesia after a steamcart accident, Claire McPhee tried lengthy treatment for the mental and emotional trauma. Now armed with her own training and medical degree, she helps others with combat-related neuroses hoping, she’ll someday—somehow—fill in her own blanks. Particularly the elusive memory of a man she once loved. Something about the new medical chief triggers her painful, hypnosis-induced blocks, but he keeps pushing her away before she can shove through the barriers to determine why. Chadwick Radcliffe has faced many challenges since assuming the position of medical chief at Fort Daniels, but facing his former love—and the knowledge that her memory of him could be deadly—pains him the most. While he’s had some preliminary success using the Eros Element, he’s all too aware its unintended effects could harm as much as heal. With the Union on the cusp of caving in to the Confederacy’s demands, time becomes a precious commodity. Ghosts rise. The Element takes on a new, unpredictable aspect. And resurrected love could give Claire and Chadwick unexpected strength—if they have the courage to break the chains welded around them to seize it. Aether Spirit is the third book in the Aether Psychics, a thrilling steampunk series with puzzling mysteries and elements of romance, and can be read as a standalone novel. If you like historical mysteries, sweet romance, and clever heroines, then you'll love Cecilia Dominic's Aether Psychics series. Download or read book Aether Light written by Randy Holmes and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2017-01-09 with total page 115 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Only one man knows in the entire world. 1. Where did we come from? 2. What is gravity? 3. What is matter? 4. What is dark matter? 5. What is dark energy? 6. What is aether? 7. What is light? After reading his book and finding out the true secrets of the universe, many are forced to wonder if this is, indeed, the greatest discovery of our time. It is a fact that sound waves (mechanical waves) require a material or medium for its propagation such as gas, solids, and liquids. The theory is that all waves need a medium to propagate through empty space, as does electromagnetic waves. As far back as 1678, scientists like Isaac Newton, James Clerk Maxwell, Nikola Tesla, and the scientific community all believed that light needed a medium to propagate through empty space. Since Einsteins special relativity theory in 1905, the modern scientific community recognizes the vacuum for the propagation of light through empty space, and not aether. Randy Lee Holmes has discovered visual proof and illustrations by more than two hundred photos and forty-six videos of the aether of nature and the universe. All photos and videos show the electromagnetic radiation blueprint of the aether that serves as a medium for all light and electromagnetic waves in nature, the universe, and beyond. The book is guaranteed to answer the seven questions that everyone wants to know. You will not only understand what you read, but you will see the world and the universe come together as one big puzzle. After reading the historical and nonfiction book Aether-Light, you will learn that all living and nonliving things are connected and made of light. Yes, people are made of light. In the beginning, God said, Let there be light.

Download or read book From Hilbert to Dilbert written by Victor Christianto and published by Infinite Study. This book was released on 2019 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book took an unconventional theme because we submit an unorthodox theme too. Karl Popper’s epistemology suggests that when the theory is refuted by observation, then it is time to look for a set of new approaches. In the first chapter, it is shown that Hilbert’s axiomatic program has failed not only by experiment (Mie theory does not agree with experiment) but also in terms of logic (Gödel theorem). Therefore we set out a new approach, starting from an old theory of Isaac Newton. Dilbert cartoon series often offer surprising for old problems, especially in this era of corporatocracy. Now we would call such an out-of-the-box solution to the old Hilbert axiomatic program as Dilbert way (or Dilbertian, if you wish). Readers may ask : but what can physicists learn from Dilbert cartoons? While it seems not obvious at first glance, yes we believe there is a great character of Dilbert cartoon, i.e. to put it in one phrase: “out-of-thebox and brutally honest.” From managers who tend to criticize other folks, only to make him/her looks smart. Or people who often send “FYI emails” only to make him/her looks managing well. We do think that such a brutal honesty is also needed in many fields of physics: from theoretical physics to applied physics, as will be discussed throughout this book.

Download or read book Physics And Culture written by Brian Cotterell and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2017-08-29 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The role of physics in our culture is examined from the time of Newton to the present day. It has three parts: an introduction to physics and two parts covering the roles of Newtonian and Modern/Postmodern physics. It is shown how popularization enabled physics to become part of our culture, while the topics discussed include religion, philosophy, politics, literature, the visual arts, and music. An underlying theme is that physics is an intimate part of our culture which, together with the other sciences, has had a wide general influence that cannot be ignored. The book has been written for all that are genuinely interested in culture. It is well referenced and illustrated, and suitable for the general public, students and academics who are interested in bridging the sciences and humanities in today's era of specialization.
Download or read book Heraclitus written by T.M. Robinson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 1987-12-15 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Phoenix Pre-Socratic series is designed for modern students of the Pre-Socratic philosophers. This volume provides the Greek text of Heraclitus with a new, facing page translation together with a commentary outlining the main problems of interpretation and the philosophical issues raised by Heraclitus' work. The volume also contains an English translation of substantial material from the ancient testimonia concerning Heraclitus' life and teaching, and offers selective bibliographic guidance. While much of the commentary follows lines of interpretation that have won general acceptance, it differs from many in its claim that the logos of which Heraclitus speaks in fragments 1, 2 and 50 means, essentially, 'statement.' This statement, uttered in words by Heraclitus, reflects that statement everlastingly uttered by the cosmos itself, which descriptively tells of how things are and prescriptively lays don patterns of cosmic activity that serve as the basis for human laws (fragment 114).
Download or read book Selected Papers of L on Rosenfeld written by Robert S. Cohen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 969 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The decision to undertake this volume was made in 1971 at Lake Como during the Varenna summer school ofthe Italian Physical Society, where Professor Leon Rosenfeld was lecturing on the history of quantum theory. We had long been struck by the unique blend of epistemological, histori cal and social concerns in his work on the foundations and development of physics, and decided to approach him there with the idea of publishing a collection of his papers. He responded enthusiastically, and agreed to help us select the papers; furthermore, he also agreed to write a lengthy introduction and to comment separately on those papers that he felt needed critical re-evaluation in the light of his current views. For he was still vigorously engaged in both theoretical investigations of, and critical not reflections on the foundations of theoretical physics. We certainly did conceive of the volume as a memorial to a 'living saint', but rather more practically, as a useful tool to place in the hands of fellow workers and students engaged in wrestling with these difficult problems. All too sadly, fate has added a memorial aspect to our labors. We agreed that in order to make this book most useful for the con temporary community of physicists and philosophers, we should trans late all non-English items into English.
Download or read book Space written by Jean de Climont and published by Editions d Assailly. This book was released on with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This essay is a system of the world based upon the Descartes’ model. But this model has been greatly amended by adding an angular momentum to the corpuscles of aether. This allows for retrieving the Newton laws of gravitation and the transverse properties of light. This aether is both the middle of light and the cause of gravitation. This aether is complying with both the Hamilton’s principle and the energy equipartition principle.
