Book excerpt: A widowed matriarch’s well-to-do English family is rocked by her plan to remarry in this “page-turner” from the bestselling author of No Angel (Publishers Weekly). Rescued from the slums as a baby by Celia Lytton and now living in New York, Barty Miller heads more than half of the Lyttons publishing house. But as they fall on bad times in the years after World War II, the family is worried that Barty will make a business decision that would be devastating to them. But will she? As events unfold, long-buried secrets concerning the whole family are revealed—and Celia makes a shocking announcement that she is leaving the company and getting remarried—shaking the very foundations of the Lyttons’ world . . . “Vincenzi writes . . . fast-paced novels with plots and subplots so deftly manipulated that it’s impossible to start reading one and still lead a productive life.” —The Washington Post

Book Lead Us Into Temptation

Download or read book Lead Us Into Temptation written by James B. Twitchell and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-06 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coke adds life. Just do it. Yo quiero Taco Bell. We live in a commercial age, awash in a sea of brand names, logos, and advertising jingles—not to mention commodities themselves. Are shoppers merely the unwitting stooges of the greedy producers who will stop at nothing to sell their wares? Are the producers' powers of persuasion so great that resistance is futile? James Twitchell counters this assumption of the used and abused consumer with a witty and unflinching look at commercial culture, starting from the simple observation that "we are powerfully attracted to the world of goods (after all, we don't call them 'bads')." He contends that far from being forced upon us against our better judgment, "consumerism is our better judgment." Why? Because increasingly, store-bought objects are what hold us together as a society, doing the work of "birth, patina, pews, coats of arms, house, and social rank"—previously done by religion and bloodline. We immediately understand the connotations of status and identity exemplified by the Nike swoosh, the Polo pony, the Guess? label, the DKNY logo. The commodity alone is not what we are after; rather, we actively and creatively want that logo and its signification—the social identity it bestows upon us. As Twitchell summarizes, "Tell me what you buy, and I will tell what you are and who you want to be." Using elements as disparate as the film The Jerk, French theorists, popular bumper stickers, and Money magazine to explore the nature and importance of advertising lingo, packaging, fashion, and "The Meaning of Self," Twitchell overturns one stodgy social myth after another. In the process he reveals the purchase and possession of things to be the self-identifying acts of modern life. Not only does the car you drive tell others who you are, it lets you know as well. The consumption of goods, according to Twitchell, provides us with tangible everyday comforts and with crucial inner security in a seemingly faithless age. That we may find our sense of self through buying material objects is among the chief indictments of contemporary culture. Twitchell, however, sees the significance of shopping. "There are no false needs." We buy more than objects, we buy meaning. For many of us, especially in our youth, Things R Us.

Book excerpt: A Dickensian coming-of-age tale about poverty, sex, World War I, and the darker side of human nature as seen through the eyes of a lobby boy in a Budapest hotel. Temptation is a rediscovered masterwork of twentieth-century fiction, a Dickensian tale of a young man coming of age in Budapest between the wars. Illegitimate and unwanted, Béla is packed off to the country to be looked after by a peasant woman the moment he is born. She starves and bullies him, and keeps him out of school. He does his best to hold his own, and eventually his mother brings him back to live with her in the city. In thrall to his feckless father, Mishka, and living in a crowded tenement, she works her fingers to the bone, while Béla shares a room with a hardworking prostitute. Finally, Béla secures a job in a fancy hotel. Though exhausted by endless work, he is fascinated by the upper-crust world that his new job exposes him to; soon he is embroiled with a rich, damaged, and dangerous woman. The atmosphere of Budapest is increasingly poisoned by the appeal of fascism, while Béla grows ever more aware of how power and money keep down the working classes. In the end, with all the odds still against him, he musters the resolve to set sail for new future.

Book Lead Us Not Into Temptation

Download or read book Lead Us Not Into Temptation written by Raymond Arroyo Jr. and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2010-06-07 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lead Us Not Into Temptation is a spiritual book as given to me by God. This book is different from other spiritual books in that it connects man with his sole link to God and that is through his own soul. Regardless of one’s religion or persuasion, this book is for all people to find their way back to God. For secularism, religion and intellectualism have failed miserably in bringing true peace and love into this world, be it in the past, our present and probably in our future also. Jesus once said, “truly, truly you must be born again of the spirit. For that which is of water is water (the body), and that which is of spirit is spirit. For the Father is spirit and for us to worship Him we must worship in spirit and in truth.” This is a universal law, the same for all people all over the world, regardless of their religious beliefs. For we all worship the same one God, and He must be worshipped in spirit and in truth. The purpose of this book is to help people change from their secular life to a spiritual life and to develop a closer walk with God in their daily lives. By which we then begin to worship God the Father in spirit and in truth. This is the one pathway never chosen by man and is the pathway to peace on earth and good will towards all men. It is the pathway to the salvation for all mankind. Part One: Lead Us Not Into Temptation explores the history of man back to the Garden of Eden and the first temptation where man falls from grace. Man after that incident embarks on a journey of secularism, worldliness and materiality, which only separates him more and more from God. Although man has had the opportunity to live in the time of the great prophets of God and with Jesus himself, he has still maintained a steady course in his secular/worldly lifestyle constantly refusing to follow the spiritual path of God. This stubbornness of man has brought him to where we find our world today, in the grips of a huge recession and probably a depression, and world tensions and terrorism threatening the peace of the world. Part Two: Deliver Us From Evil, teaches how one can develop a life of spirituality and redemption from both God and from oneself. I begin with the prophecies of God as given to us in the Holy Bible and in the Bible codes. I explain how these prophecies line up with our generation living on Earth right now and are 100% accurate and have all been fulfilled to date. They are God’s warning to us that we cannot go on living worldly/secularly lives for we are reaching the end of the road: the End Times as predicted in the bible. It is a warning meaning we can change the future from doom and gloom to eternal bliss, but it is up to each of us. That unless we are willing to make some very fundamental changes in our lives towards one another and to God, we won’t survive as a civilization That without faith, hope and love in God we are doomed to repeat our mistakes. I teach the power of prayer and how that through prayer with God, one will find the answer and changes for their lives. I show how a prayer life is the only link we have to God the Father. Through daily prayer, one will begin the process of recreating a life of spirituality. I teach the principles of a spiritual life and the fruits of God’s Holy Spirit. How God works the fruits into your life changing you from your former self (imperfections and dislikes) into the new person filled with the wonderful fruits of God’s Holy Spirit. I explain that the key of life is love for without love there could be no God, no universe, no us. This book is for all people of all races, all religions to find the cure to life that has escaped them all through the years. It will unite the reader to a one to one relation with God and a healing and rebirth for their souls.

Book excerpt: Although temptation is a common and well-acknowledged part of the human experience, few realize the truth behind temptation and fewer still know how to defeat it. Tempted and Tried will not reassure Christians by claiming that temptation is less powerful or less prevalent than it is; instead, it will prepare believers for battle by telling the truth about the cosmic war that is raging. Moore shows that the temptation of every Christian is part of a broader conspiracy against God, a conspiracy that confronts everyone who shares the flesh of Jesus through human birth and especially confronts those who share the Spirit of Christ through the new birth of redemption. Moore walks readers through the Devil’s ancient strategies for temptation revealed in Jesus’ wilderness testing. Moore considers how those strategies might appear in a contemporary context and points readers to a way of escape. Tempted and Tried will remind Christians that temptation must be understood in terms of warfare, encouraging them with the truth that victory has already been secured through the triumph of Christ.

Book excerpt: This is an approach to Christ's impeccability and temptation through exploring and evaluating the theological models that have been developed from the early church to the present day. Drawing from tradition and the relevant biblical evidence, John McKinley argues that Jesus was truly tempted in ways that are closely relevant to the temptations common to us. Having been tempted for us in this way, Jesus can provide true help as the credible example to follow and truly sympathetic ally in the fight against sin. Key to understanding how Jesus remained unable to sin and sharply vulnerable to temptation is the role of the Holy Spirit.
