Book excerpt: Physical and psychological intimate partner violence (IPV) are deleterious to the physical and mental health of romantic partners and their children, yet both forms of aggression continue to be prevalent even when couples become pregnant with their first child. This study aimed to investigate the factors contributing to IPV in couples experiencing the transition to parenthood. A community sample of 98 heterosexual couples undergoing the transition to parenthood was recruited from Victoria, BC. Couples self-reported levels of depressive symptomatology, attachment anxiety and avoidance, relationship satisfaction, and frequency of physical and psychological IPV perpetration and victimization. Men with greater attachment anxiety perpetrated both forms of IPV at a higher rate than men with lower levels of anxiety. Women with greater depressive symptoms were more psychologically aggressive towards their partners. Women who were more depressed, or more anxiously or avoidantly attached were less satisfied with their relationships, and decreased satisfaction was in turn related to greater perpetration of physical and psychological aggression. Women's relationship satisfaction mediated the effects of their depressive symptoms and attachment anxiety and avoidance on their perpetration of psychological IPV, and the effects of their attachment insecurity on their perpetration of physical IPV. Relationship satisfaction did not mediate these associations for men. Men's avoidance did not moderate the association between women's anxiety and men's and women's IPV perpetration; a model with genders reversed testing the moderating effect of women's avoidance on the association between men's anxiety and men's and women's IPV perpetration was also not significant. Men's anxiety also predicted women's psychological IPV perpetration, controlling for their own anxiety and psychological victimization. The results illuminate the ways in which men and women may be affected differently by the factors contributing to risk for violence during the transition to parenthood. Implications for prenatal interventions targeting depression, attachment insecurity, and relationship satisfaction in order to reduce the risk of IPV are discussed.

Relationship satisfaction tends to decline in the first year of parenthood as the partners are adjusting to the demands of their new roles as parents. History of trauma and current symptoms of Post-traumatic Stress (PTS) have been associated with decreased intimacy, communication, and relationship adjustment, yet there is a lack of research on how PTS symptoms and trauma history affect parents and families. The current study investigated how PTS symptoms and trauma history affect new parents' relationship satisfaction in the presence of substance misuse and intimate partner violence. Ninety eight heterosexual couples filled out questionnaires one year after the birth of their first child. Hierarchical multiple regression results indicated that PTS symptoms predicted relationship satisfaction over and above IPV victimization and substance misuse for men. However, for women, psychological IPV victimization was the only significant multivariate predictor for women. Additionally, for men, PTS symptoms interacted with harmful drinking to predict relationship satisfaction. The results suggest that women's relationship functioning is particularly affected by psychological aggression while men's relationship functioning is particularly susceptible to effects of harmful drinking and their own PTS symptoms. Implications are discussed.

Book excerpt: One in three women endure intimate partner violence (IPV), with common consequences relating to depression and substance use. The co-occurring relationships of these factors have received limited empirical attention. This study examined how risk factors of IPV, stressful life events, and problematic substance use were related to depressive symptoms among women who have experienced IPV in the past 6 months. Participants included 112 women (Mage=32.26; 67% Black) recruited from community organizations in the U.S. Midsouth. Results from a hierarchical multiple regression analysis indicated that after accounting for age, income, racial minority status, physical health, and violence- and stress-related factors, more frequent IPV and more problematic tobacco use were associated with increased depressive symptomatology. These findings highlight a meaningful connection between problematic tobacco use and depressive symptoms, indicating the need to incorporate tobacco use psychoeducation and cessation strategies into treatment programs for women experiencing depression in the context of IPV.

Book excerpt: Depression is a widespread condition affecting approximately 7.5 million parents in the U.S. each year and may be putting at least 15 million children at risk for adverse health outcomes. Based on evidentiary studies, major depression in either parent can interfere with parenting quality and increase the risk of children developing mental, behavioral and social problems. Depression in Parents, Parenting, and Children highlights disparities in the prevalence, identification, treatment, and prevention of parental depression among different sociodemographic populations. It also outlines strategies for effective intervention and identifies the need for a more interdisciplinary approach that takes biological, psychological, behavioral, interpersonal, and social contexts into consideration. A major challenge to the effective management of parental depression is developing a treatment and prevention strategy that can be introduced within a two-generation framework, conducive for parents and their children. Thus far, both the federal and state response to the problem has been fragmented, poorly funded, and lacking proper oversight. This study examines options for widespread implementation of best practices as well as strategies that can be effective in diverse service settings for diverse populations of children and their families. The delivery of adequate screening and successful detection and treatment of a depressive illness and prevention of its effects on parenting and the health of children is a formidable challenge to modern health care systems. This study offers seven solid recommendations designed to increase awareness about and remove barriers to care for both the depressed adult and prevention of effects in the child. The report will be of particular interest to federal health officers, mental and behavioral health providers in diverse parts of health care delivery systems, health policy staff, state legislators, and the general public.
