This loss can lead to decreased success within GPAs, test scores, attendance, or behavioral records. Upon experiencing this loss, students are more likely to suffer further academic and social consequences that limit their ability to be successful in the future. This study seeks to analyze the impact of transition programs on student achievement during the transition to high school. The Academic Seminar program at Sunnyside High School aims to prevent students from experiencing achievement loss. This study will analyze the impact of Academic Seminar on student performance during the transition to high school by collecting data from three years of enrollment. This study used a quantitative analysis of GPA shifts over time and a categorization based on demographics to determine any trends present in the data. Participants in this study were broken into two groups for each of the years, including the experiment group, those students enrolled in Academic Seminar, and the control group, students who were not enrolled in the transition program and did not receive any other support from another school program. Results indicate a connection between students enrolling in Academic Seminar and a decrease in achievement loss overall. To better interpret the role of Academic Seminar on these positive shifts in academic achievement, further research must be conducted in multiple school settings. The findings of this study may help direct future research toward a possible solution to the issue of achievement loss in high schools.

Book excerpt: Decades of research have shown a normative decline in academic performance to be associated with the transition from elementary school to middle school. Based on the idea that these difficulties stem from a lack of relevant coping skills, the current study focused on the preventive effects of a three-year social and emotional learning (SEL) program in mitigating transitional achievement loss. Quality of implementation, a crucial, but often overlooked, factor in program evaluation, is the framework through which students' intervention experiences were defined. In each intervention year, implementation was assessed through teacher-reported curriculum fidelity and teacher's perception of program quality. These factors were tested as predictors of changes in GPA and standardized test scores across the transition. Intervention dosage received over the fifth grade year emerged as a significant predictor of GPA change. Dosage was unrelated to standardized test change, though differences between genders and ethnic groups in transitional standardized test performance were found. Teachers' ratings of program effectiveness were also unrelated to outcome, but were associated with intervention dosage.

Book excerpt: Although students causal attributions yield divergent trajectories in achievement and well-being (Blackwell, Trzesniewski, & Dweck, 2007; Yeager & Walton, 2011; Yeager et al., 2014), few attribution intervention studies to date have focused on the transition to middle school, during which time students often experience losses in achievement and sense of social belonging (Eccles, 2004; Kingery, Erdley, & Marshall, 2011). As such, the purpose of the current study was to develop and test the efficacy of an attributional intervention on students attributions, motivation, social belonging, and achievement during the transition to middle school. The sample consisted of 133 fifth and sixth grade students enrolled at two public middle schools. Students were randomly assigned to treatment and control modules, which were modeled on previous attributional interventions. Both modules consisted of information regarding the process of transitioning to middle school. Measures of attribution, academic motivation, social belonging, and academic achievement were collected immediately following implementation and at short- and long-term follow-up. Hierarchical linear regression was used to test if the intervention positively changed students attribution, motivation, social belonging, and academic achievement. Results indicated that the intervention was not successful in shifting attributions or impacting motivation, social belonging, and achievement. There was a significant interaction effect between treatment status and identification with minority status in predicting academic achievement at one time point. In exploring the interaction, there is some evidence to suggest the treatment was successful for a local minority population, which is a group that is a minority within the specific context of the school. Implications for future research are discussed.
