Book Intervallic Fretboard Towards Improvising on the Guitar

Download or read book Intervallic Fretboard Towards Improvising on the Guitar written by Ashkan Mashhour and published by . This book was released on 2010-11 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shapes and patterns are widely used in teaching the guitar, be it for scales, chords, or arpeggios. Moving away from shapes and patterns, this knowledge of intervals on the fretboard and its geometric properties leads to an intelligent choice of notes based on their harmonic function. Praised by guitar greats Brent Mason, Biréli Lagrène, Brett Garsed, as well as Jimmy Brown (Guitar World) and Prof. Richard Smith (USC), Intervallic Fretboard demonstrates the versatility of intervallic thinking in various music genres and playing styles.Accompanying CD/audio is available separately (see website).– www.intervallicfretboard.com –

Book Music Theory Through Improvisation

Download or read book Music Theory Through Improvisation written by Ed Sarath and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-07-04 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Designed for Music Theory courses, Music Theory Through Improvisation presents a unique approach to basic theory and musicianship training that examines the study of traditional theory through the art of improvisation. The book follows the same general progression of diatonic to non-diatonic harmony in conventional approaches, but integrates improvisation, composition, keyboard harmony, analysis, and rhythm. Conventional approaches to basic musicianship have largely been oriented toward study of common practice harmony from the Euroclassical tradition, with a heavy emphasis in four-part chorale writing. The author’s entirely new pathway places the study of harmony within improvisation and composition in stylistically diverse format, with jazz and popular music serving as important stylistic sources. Supplemental materials include a play-along audio in the downloadable resources for improvisation and a companion website with resources for students and instructors.

Book Essential Tools for Post Bop Cutting Edge Jazz Improvisation

Download or read book Essential Tools for Post Bop Cutting Edge Jazz Improvisation written by Olegario Diaz and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Post-Bop is a modern jazz style that continues the distinguishing characteristics that separate jazz from the world of pop and rock; swing rhythm and extended harmonies (9th chords 11ths, altered chords, etc). Post-Bop grew out of the Hard Bop genre during the early to mid 60s as musicians such as Bill Evans, Wayne Shorter and Herbie Hancock began to introduce more extended harmonies, abstract structures and looser rhythms in their playing and compositions. When Hancock and Shorter joined Miles Davis's quintet in the mid-60s, that group became the perfect vehicle for extending the boundaries of what could happen in a Post-Bop format. The Miles Davis Quintet albums, "Nefertiti" and "Sorcer", continue to be pinnacles of Post-Bop composition and performance. Some styles of free modal jazz, such as Coltrane's "A Love Supreme", are also part of the Post-Bop sound. Although there are still some musicians, such as Kenny Garret, who play in that style, mostly that sound has been fading since the early 70s. Of course, theory doesn't come close to explaining music. If music is a language, theory is just grammar. More important than grammar is knowing the vocabulary that comes from listening, with awareness, to great players, and playing as much as possible. Beyond grammar and vocabulary is the ability to communicate with listeners to "tell a story," and to reach an audience on an emotional, or even spiritual, level.

Book Creative Possibilities for Contemporary Jazz Improvisation

Download or read book Creative Possibilities for Contemporary Jazz Improvisation written by Olegario Diaz and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2020-10-15 with total page 344 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This manual contains complementary information for that included in my previous texts regarding contemporary jazz improvisation techniques. As we all know John Coltrane revolutionized the harmonic concept of modern jazz sax improvisation. Other performers such as Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordons, Wayne Shorter, Cannonball Adderley, Michael Brecker and Bob Berg also made incredible contributions to Modern sax performance. We must also include trumpet performers such as Freddy Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Clifford Brown, Chet Baker, Kenny Dorham, Wallace Roney, Tom Harrel, Randy Brecker and Roy Hargrove among others who also added new sounds and scales to this harmonic concept shift. From a technical perspective the book contains exercises for scale inversions, phrase lines from transcriptions, arpeggios, chromatisms and passing tones (lineal and intervallic structures) applied to: Major Scales +11 Lydian +5 +8 Dominant 7 Altered Symmetric diminished Whole tone scale +11 Lydian flat 7 Minor Scales Minor Dorian mode Minor Major 7 The objective is to play the exercises in all twelve tones starting each phrase from any scale note according to the corresponding chord at any given point. These exercises and line phrases are presented as 8th and 16th notes as rhythmic notations. Arpeggios as well as ascendant and descendant scales will be played in both lineal and intervallic modes. The transcriptions include emblematic line phrases by Keith Jarret, Sonny Rollins, Dexter Gordons, Freddy Hubbard, Tom Harrel and Wallace Roney. This project is an extension of a ten chapter collection on improvisation by the same author: •Improvise Now •240 Chromatic Exercises + 1165 Jazz Lines Phrases •Herbie Hancock. Book From Scales to Solos

    Book Details:
  • Author : Graham Tippett
  • Publisher : Graham Tippett
  • Release : 2017-05-08
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 57 pages

Download or read book From Scales to Solos written by Graham Tippett and published by Graham Tippett. This book was released on 2017-05-08 with total page 57 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you ask anyone who's been playing guitar for a while how to turn scales into solos, you'll likely get a variety of answers. They'll tell you to learn licks, work on your arpeggios, even learn your favorite players' solos note for note. While this is all good advice, I've had some particularly stubborn students that wanted to go beyond that; they wanted to be able to improvise using any scale up and down the fretboard, but at the same time break free from those deeply-ingrained scalar lines and patterns. It was then that I suggested the zonal approach to improvisation; by working in reduced areas of the neck with specifically designed patterns, they were soon able to create melodic, flowing lines that didn't sound at all like scales--they sounded like real music! This is the approach you'll find in this book. We dissect 15 of the most common scales, beyond the pentatonics, and break them down into zones which can be practiced either by scale, or for any particular scale across the fretboard. The objective of this book then is to provide a structured reference to make the transition from playing scales to playing, improvising and creating musical lines when soloing. It’s aimed at the intermediate to advanced guitarist looking to be able to improvise confidently and freely on the instrument in a wide variety of styles. It is also aimed at guitarists that want to move beyond rote pentatonic/blues soloing and incorporate other scales and modes into their playing, as well as building up a vocabulary to solo fluently over chord changes.
