Book excerpt: The production use of precast concrete pavement (PCP) has come a long way over the last 15 years. The technology is gaining wider acceptance in the U.S. for rapid repair and rehabilitation of concrete pavements as well as for heavily trafficked asphalt concrete pavements and intersections. Several U.S. highway agencies have implemented the PCP technology, and other agencies have constructed demonstration projects. In the U.S., the PCP technology is being used for intermittent repairs (full-depth joint repairs or full panel replacement) and for continuous applications (longer length/wider area rehabilitation) with service life expectations of at least 20 years for intermittent repairs and at least 40 years for continuous applications, without significant future corrective treatment. Strategic Highway Research Program 2 (SHRP2) Project R05 was conducted from 2008 to 2012 to develop technical information and guidelines that would encourage the rapid and successful adoption of PCP technology. In 2013, the SHRP2 Implementation Assistance Program (IAP) was created to help State highway agencies, metropolitan planning organizations, and other interested organizations deploy SHRP2-developed products to deliver more efficient, costeffective solutions to meet the complex challenges facing transportation agencies. On August 7, 2015, the Federal Highway Administration—in partnership with the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials—announced the selection of 21 transportation agencies receiving implementation and technical assistance awards as part of Round 6 of the SHRP2 IAP. The Connecticut Department of Transportation, one of the agencies selected as a lead adopter of Project R05 technology, received an award of 150,000 [dollars] to help offset the cost of constructing a PCP project. Connecticut also received user-incentive funds, in the amount of 75,000 [dollars], for the development of plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) related technology transfer activities leading to agencywide adoption of PCP technology. This case study report provides details of the 2016 PCP use for rehabilitation of two distressed asphalt concrete bus pads along a section of the busway of CTfastrak, a bus rapid transit system in New Britain, Connecticut.

Book excerpt: This report discusses the design, placement and preliminary evaluation of a sulfur extended asphalt pavement. Initial data on frictional characteristics, rideability and strength was also obtained. In 1981 an overlay consisting of sulfur extended asphalt (SEA) pavement was placed on the I-95 interstate system in Maine. Approximately 26,200 tons of the experimental pavement was used. Three different blend weights, 30/70, 20/80 and 10/90 of sulfur to asphalt, were incorporated in the project. The SEA pavement was mixed by the "Direct Method", first adding asphalt then sulfur, using and 8,000 pound batch plant. The SEA mix was found to produce low concentrations of Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) and Sulfur Dioxide (SO2) and high concentrations of total suspended particulates (TSP) around the paver during the laydown operation.

Book excerpt: This demonstration project consisted of three adjacent highway resurfacing projects using asphalt cement concrete removed from an Interstate highway which had become severely rutted. The salvaged asphaltic concrete was later crushed and hauled to a plant site where it was combined with virgin materials to resurface the three projects. Only two of the projects were used for performance evaluation as the third project was in an interchange area including ramps and was otherwise too short. It was concluded that recycling was cost effective and a high quality surface can be constructed using recycled asphalt cement concrete.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to research long-range (parametric) cost estimation at the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), utilizing AASHTO's Trns.port Cost Estimation and Decision Support software. Info Tech, Inc., analysis reviewed CDOT's current long-range estimation practices and identified revisions which would be needed to satisfactorily meet CDOT's future cost estimating requirements, i.e., in order to develop consistent and reliable cost estimates when little is known about a project. Both item and contract classifications utilized by CDOT in BAMS/DSS were revised to reflect more logical functional groupings. The new contract work type and item classification were used directly to develop an Interim Solution for Long-Range Cost Estimation that uses historical bid-based default prices. Info Tech analysts also researched Internet sources to identify the availability of major item cost data at the regional and national level, including data for multimodal project types.

Tamworth FR-24-1(8): A primary rural two-lane highway using cold recycling of the existing pavement to construct a reclaimed stabilized base course. 4. Jackon F-FLH-1(7): A primary rural two-lane highway using cold recycling of the existing pavement to construct a reclaimed stabilized base course.
