Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive review of the emotive and often controversial topic of abortion provides clinicians with a multidisciplinary focus on abortion services, discussing clinical topics in their sociological, legal and ethical context. It is particularly timely as novel methods of service delivery make this vital resource more accessible, allowing abortion to be performed in community settings. Topics include medical and surgical methods of abortion, ultrasound scanning, pain control, complications, and abortion in women with medical conditions, as well as ethics, stigma, and human rights. Written by leading authorities in their subject areas, Abortion Care is essential reading for medical and nursing specialists and forms a useful resource in the delivery of graduate courses in the fields of obstetrics and gynaecology and sexual and reproductive healthcare. It is also of interest to professionals involved in planning, delivering and managing women's health services, including counsellors, service managers and public health specialists.

Download or read book Viruses and Reproductive Injustice written by Ilana Löwy and published by JHU Press. This book was released on 2024-01-30 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Brazil's Zika outbreak revealed extreme health disparities and reproductive injustice across racial and socioeconomic lines. Brazil's 2015 Zika outbreak led to severe illnesses for many and the birth of several thousands of children with severe brain damage. Even though mosquito-borne diseases such as the Zika virus affect people across society, these children were born almost exclusively to poor, and usually non-white, women. In Viruses and Reproductive Injustice, Ilana Löwy explores the complicated health disparities and reproductive injustice that led to these cases of congenital Zika syndrome. Löwy examines the history of the outbreak in Brazil and connects it to broader questions concerning reproductive rights, the medical science behind understanding new pathogens, and the role of international health organizations in battling—or ignoring—public health crises. The explanation behind the strongly skewed distribution of cases among social classes was far from straightforward or obvious during the Zika outbreak. Löwy argues that the disproportionate effect of Zika on births among the poor is primarily a function of dramatic disparities in access to contraception and prenatal care, as well as Brazil's anti-abortion laws: only wealthier women have access to safe abortions. This is a book about the changing meaning of an infectious disease outbreak and a haunting demonstration that an epidemic is both a biological and a political event produced by the complicated entanglement of humans, viruses, and mosquitoes.

The current collection of essays explores cultural themes which are different than those in the editors' earlier volume, La France à l'aube du XXIe siècle: Tendances et mutations / France at the Dawn of the Twenty-First Century: Trends and Transformations, published in 2000 (Summa Publications; see Google Book Seach on home page). Among the topics explored in this new volume are the presidential election of 2007, changing dietary habits, the condition of women, environmental policies, the economy, education, social mobility, young people, religion, as well as contemporary music, cinema, regional theater, and literature. Articles on multiculturalism, the position of French in today's world, and France in the European Union also provide the reader with provocative insights. All chapters include extensive references (and web sites) and will be of interest to academics, teachers and students of contemporary French culture, and all Francophiles. For the classroom teacher, additional cultural information and activities will be found on the editors' own home page; this material will be updated on a regular basis, thus facilitating the task of presenting a modern-day France that is continuously changing. - Publisher.
