Book Research Guide to the Russian and Soviet Censuses

Download or read book Research Guide to the Russian and Soviet Censuses written by Ralph S. Clem and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 395 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taken together, the Russian census of 1897 and the Soviet censuses of 1926, 1959, 1970, and 1979 constitute the largest collection of empirical data available on that country, but until the publication of this book in 1986, the daunting complexity of that material prevented Western scholars from exploiting the censuses fully. This book is both a guide to the use of and a detailed index to these censuses. The first part of the book consists of eight essays by specialist on the USSR, six of them dealing with the use of census materials and the availability of data for research on ethnicity and language, marriage and the family, education and literacy, migration and organization, age structure, and occupations. The second part, a comprehensive index for all the published census, presents more than six hundred annotated entries for the census tables, a keyword index that enables researchers to find census data by subject, and a list of political-administrative units covered in each census.

Understanding Soviet Society has grown out of the authors’ experience as sociologists researching and teaching about the Soviet Union. Book Why Control Immigration

    Book Details:
  • Author : Caress Schenk
  • Publisher : University of Toronto Press
  • Release : 2018-03-01
  • ISBN : 1487516363
  • Pages : 391 pages

Download or read book Why Control Immigration written by Caress Schenk and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2018-03-01 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration management in Russia is a window into how public policy, the federal system, and patronage are used to manage conflicting demands. This multi-level balancing act demonstrates the importance of high-level politics, institutional interests and constraints, and the conditions under which government actors at all levels can pursue their own interests as the state seeks political equilibrium. Why Control Immigration? argues that a scarcity of legal labour and the ensuing growth of illegal immigration can act as a patronage resource for bureaucratic and regional elites. Assessing the legal and political context of migration, Caress Schenk blends a political science approach with insights from the comparative immigration literature. Using this framework, she also engages with attitudes on populism and anti-immigration, particularly in terms of how political leaders utilize and employ public opinion in Russia.

Book Population Ethnicity And Nation building

Download or read book Population Ethnicity And Nation building written by Calvin Goldscheider and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the linkages between ethnicity and population processes in the context of nation-building. Using historical and contemporary illustrations in a variety of countries, parts of this complex puzzle are scrutinized through the prisms of sociology, history, political science, anthropology, and demography Themes of ethnic group formation and transformation, persistence and assimilation, demographic transitions and convergences, and the processes of political mobilization and economic development are described and compared. Case studies from Southeast Asia, China, Africa, Brazil, Israel, the former Soviet Union, Canada, Europe, and the United States are presented by leading scholars. The examples illustrate the diversity of contexts that connect population, ethnicity, and nation-building, raising new questions and comparative problems. The importance of ethnic conflict for issues of inequality and group disadvantage in the emerging societies of Asia, Africa, and the Middle East; in the politics of race and immigration in western societies; and in European and American history emerges from the research. The multidisciplinary emphasis addresses core themes of ethnicity and nation-building in comparative perspectives.

Book Promoting Heritage Language in Northwest Russia

Download or read book Promoting Heritage Language in Northwest Russia written by Laura Siragusa and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-19 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume illustrates how language revival movements in Russia and elsewhere have often followed a specific pattern of literacy bias in the promotion of a minority’s heritage language, partly neglecting the social and relational aspects of orality. Using the Vepsian Renaissance as an example, this volume brings to the surface a literacy-orality dualism new to the discussion around revival movements. In addition to the more-theoretically oriented scopes, this book addresses all the actors involved in revival movements including activists, scholars and policy-makers, and opens a discussion on literacy and orality, and power and agency in the multiple relational aspects of written and oral practices. This study addresses issues common to language revival movements worldwide and will appeal to researchers of linguistic anthropology, sociolinguistics, education and language policy, and culture studies.
